As Google released Android 4.0 to open source, various tablet manufacturers are making unofficial ports on their devices. New ICS devices also continue to be announced by different companies. Coby Electronics, a company known for budget-friendly electronics, has announced that they will be showing off five new Android 4.x tablets at CES 2012.

Coby will be releasing 7-inch (MID7042), 8-inch (MID8042), 9-inch (MID9042), 9.7-inch (MID9742), and 10-inch (MID1042) tablets early next year. All of the tablets will be powered by a 1 GHz Cortex A8 processor with 1 GB of RAM. They will also have microSD slots for storage expansion up to 32 GB, as well as, 1080p HDMI output, capacitive touchscreens, and Wi-Fi capability.

The tablets will not be offering features that will make users in awe aside from the low price that may likely be attractive to budget-conscious tablet buyers. Even though major retailers Amazon and Barnes and Noble are offering some pretty popular sub-$300 tablets right now, the onslaught of cheaper Ice Cream Sandwich tablets from companies like Coby will offer the the Android tablet market a sense of competition. On the part of the consumers, it will give us a wider variety of choices.

No official prices of the tablets have been announced as of yet.

The Coby NBPC722 packs a 624MHz Marvell processor inside a 7″ netbook running on 2GB flash and Windows CE. It’s not the faster one in the market but at US$85, who’s complaining? That’s even cheaper than an iPod Nano. If you’re one of the folks who tend to use netbooks as glorified cellphones and use them just for instant messaging, email and social networking (or knows someone like that), I’m sure you’ll appreciate this device more than I do.

We recently reported that, COBY, were set to release a netbook, the Midget PC in March 2009 for under $100. Coby Electronics Corporation have made a statement saying that isn’t the case though, and not just regarding the price.

Coby are currently not producing a laptop, PC or netbook. Market and consumer trends are being monitored by Coby, however a decision hasn’t been made on whether they will begin to launch laptops. For now they will continue to focus on products such as LCD TVs, DVD players, MP3 players and accessories.

Statement from Coby:

Coby Electronics Corporation is not in fact developing or producing a laptop computer in the under-$100 price category, referred to in various erroneous reports as the “Midget PC,” “PoqetMate-7” and “PoqetMate-9.” Coby Electronics Corporation is not currently producing a PC nor is one headed to market at any price under the company’s name. While Coby Electronics Corporation constantly monitors and evaluates all consumer electronics categories, no decision has been made to develop or launch laptops, nor have there been any specifications, pricing and distribution channels created for such product at this time. Coby Electronics Corporation remains focused on producing high-quality, innovative and competitively priced products in a range of consumer electronics categories, including LCD TVs, Video MP3 players, Portable and Home DVD Players, Digital Photo Frames, iPod Docking Stations, Radios and Accessories.

Move over netbooks, here comes another player in this ever shrinking laptop market and it goes by the monicker Midget PC. This will be brought to us by famous international manufacturer and distributor of electronics consumer-packaged goods Coby Electronics, hopefully sometime in 2009. And guess how much this Midget PC would cost? – $99.95.

Coby’s Midget PC which will be called “PogetMate-7″ and “Poget-Mate-9″ will be smaller than a netbook but not that small to be called a pocket PC or MID. Screen size would range from 7-9 inches and will not have Windows for its OS since according to COBY was already used by both Asus and Acer with their netbooks. In addition these two midget PCs will be similar with standard laptops and notebooks in their form factor.

Other specs are not yet available, but Coby plans to release this netbook by March 2009.
