We got a flurry of news regarding the CrunchPad, er the JooJoo tablet. It finally hit the FCC to show of what it’s made of. It has a non-removable battery and will carry the older Atom N270 CPU but paired with a NVIDIA Ion for graphics capabilities.

Aside from WiFi, the tablet also has a 3G modem in it which means it might come in two versions like the iPad – one with 3G and one without. It also confirms that the JooJoo will have a measly 4GB of internal storage.

Further digging revealed that the tablet runs on Windows Vista in some test setup photos though how the 4GB storage will take such a bloated OS is beyond me. You won’t see this in the production model though, as it will run Linux but the company behind the tablet, Fusion Garage, was kind enough to share some screenshots of its new user interface.

It now has a grid of icons on top of a user-customizable wallpaper. New features include two-finger scrolling and single-finger panning, two keyboard modes for both one-handed and touch-typing use. The chassis of the JooJoo has been changed from black to champagne. We have more pics below.

As expected, the controversial JooJoo tablet is going to be released quite soon, and now there’s a definite shipping date: March 25. This has been confirmed by Fusion Garage itself, which stands to profit from selling the JooJoo tablet at a similar price point to Apple’s iPad — $499 USD. The iPad may have the iPhone OS and excellent integration with Apple’s other services, but the JooJoo offers a larger screen at 12.1-inches, and uses a Webkit-based web browser that will probably have no problems with Flash, unlike the Apple iPad. The demand for devices such as the iPad and JooJoo is certainly there. But only time will tell if either product can really live up to the expectations.

Amidst the controversy surrounding this tablet, it looks like the manufacturer Fusion Garage is still pushing through with releasing it later this month. The JooJoo, previously known as the CrunchPad, is going to be shipping in the next few weeks and the company was previously taking pre-orders for $499 last December. It certainly has the same price range as the iPad, let’s see if the specs match up.

JooJoo

12.1″ 1368 x 768 capacitive touchscreen

4GB HDD

Linux OS

USB-compatible

5-hour battery life

Webkit browser

802.11b/g

That doesn’t look like much and it seems this highly-anticipated device might just come crashing under the weight of the iPad. The JooJoo will be working with an OEM manufacturer to keep costs low; they say that their partner is a major player in Southeast Asia. Samsung maybe or even LG or HTC? The bigger screen might save it but they should have added more storage if it’s to compete with other slate tablets being released.

This tablet has gone through a lot of problems this past year including delays in prototyping, software crashes and the latest is the lawsuit between the idea originator Michael Arrington of TechCrunch fame and Fusion Garage, the designer and manufacturer.

Just a quick comment on that, I think Arrington lost focus in getting involved in making hardware. He and his team excels in media content, especially those related to tech and startups, but dabbling in design and manufacturing probably wasn’t for him and he even decided to go all out and start big with a tablet PC. The point seems irrelevant now since the main goal of the CrunchPad was to create a content device that would be cheap, lightweight and easy to use – something the iPad already promises to deliver in a couple of months.

Back in July of last year, Michael Arrington of TechCrunch proposed that a “dead simple Web tablet” be built for about $200 so he can surf the Web and do other lightweight tasks like send instant messages and make quick calls with Skype on the go. Fast forward to April 2009 and this concept for a cheap mobile Internet device looks like it’s closer to becoming a reality than most people are willing to think. While some might say that the TechCrunch Tablet (a.k.a. the “CrunchPad”) is nothing but vaporware that will never see the light of day, these photos (along with several others) prove otherwise.

Pictured above is a new prototype of the CrunchPad that touts a 12-inch capacitive screen, Intel Atom processor, a custom WebKit-based browser and pretty much all of the specs that were first considered at the product’s conception. Michael Arrington is careful to note that they are still not ready to launch this device and they can’t put the pin on a price point, but whenever they’re ready, I think we just might see another revolution in the computer industry. Or maybe not. Either way, this seems like an interesting product, and I can’t wait to try it out.
