This isn’t the first touchscreen mod made to a netbook and it certainly won’t be the last but, for anyone with the Dell Mini 10v, it could be very interesting. Weathejx of MyDellMini forums, explains he was jealous of the touchscreen display mod for the Dell Mini 9, so had a go at creating the mod for the Mini 10v. Which he’s done, with successful results.

The kit used, was a Hoda kit, which cost $85. Unfortunately, the cables packaged with the kit, didn’t work on the Mini 10v, so it needed tweaking before it would work, which means those who aren’t that technical minded, probably won’t be able to pull the mod off without help. It took several dissasembles and reassembles of the netbook before it worked fully. It also required parts of the case to be cut away, as well as some soldering.

And we have another touchscreen mod. One of the users at MyDellMini tinkered with a Dell Mini 10v and installed a Hoda 10.1″ Touchscreen Kit. For around US$85 and a strong will, you can do the same though it did get him a few tries to reassemble the chassis to get the touchscreen to work. He also decided to put off turning it into a convertible since the monitor cables weren’t long enough.

If you thought the Sony VAIO P was overpriced for what it was, how about the Dell Mini 10N? The Mini 10N has been listed on Dell’s website for $100,278. Featuring Linux Ubuntu, it has the same specs as it’s Windows powered counterpart, the Mini 10V. Obviously the pricing is a mistake on Dell’s part and should be fixed soon but, it’s not the first time Dell have mislisted the price of an item.

Once again, Dell will be updating their Mini 10 netbook range. From next month, a new configuration option will be added to the Dell Mini 10V. Consumers will be able to purchase the netbook with Broadcom Crystal HD on board, along with the new Pine Trail processor. The HD version netbook will start at a price of $425, which isn’t too bad considering what you get. The only downside however, as UberGizmo point out, is viewing could prove difficult with it’s glossy display but, if you can get the right angle, a full battery is said to last for up to 6 hours, time for at least 2 average length movies.

It also boasts the N270 Intel Atom processor giving it that extra boost of performance with a clock speed of 1.6Ghz. Joining the N270 is 1GB of system memory, a 10.1 inch display at a crisp 1024×576 resolution which is powered by the Intel GMA 950 graphics chip.

It can get you connected quickly as well, seeing as it brings with it Wi-Fi and a 10/100 local network adapter. While on the net, take advantage of the built-in powerful CPU and graphics adapter with video conferencing via the 1.3 megapixel webcam.

If you’re looking to upgrade from XP or Vista on your netbook, or perhaps you already have, then here’s some great news for you. Some netbook makers have already updated the driver download pages to include Windows 7 drivers which should work better than Vista drivers you may be using instead. Most Asus netbooks now have drivers for Windows 7 from their support page.

Other companies have updated their support pages but, not all companies support many netbook models. There is support from Toshiba for the NB205, while Acer are providing Windows 7 drivers for the Aspire One 751 and AOP531h with AOD250 to follow. Dell are listing drivers for the Mini 10v and Mini 10 but not the Inspiron Mini 9 or 12. HP on the other hand have support for discontinued netbooks, such as the HP Mini 2140. They’ve also got support for the 110, 5101 and other models. Lenovo have also updated their support page to include manuals but, no drivers yet. This could change soon though.

On Dell’s website, there are two Dell Mini 10Vs listed. One with an 8GB SSD and Ubuntu and the other with a 160GB hard drive and XP. But due to an error on the listing under the specifications, both were listed as having a “Microsoft Operating System”. Under the 160GB model, it was listed as XP, while the 8GB SSD model was listed as Ubuntu. This caused many message boards to jokingly claim that Ubuntu was now a Microsoft product. This isn’t the case though fortunately and word must have got to Dell as the specifications have now been modified to say just “Operating System”.

Dell is beefing up the functionality of both its Mini 10 and Mini 10v with two upgrade options. Available now if you purchase the Dell Mini 10 from its online store is an option to pack the said netbook with a GPS module which you can get for $369. Nothing else change from its technical specs though besides this GPS.

Likewise, if you prefer the Dell Mini 10v which if you don’t know yet is different from the Dell Mini 10v by virtue of its Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz CPU as compared to the Mini 10′s Z520 1.3GHz., Portable Monkey was reporting that you can get an option to upgrade its CPU to the better N280. To get this you need to add an additional $25 from its list price of  $349.

It has only been available for shipping for a short while but, already the Dell Mini 10v is shipping has received the OS X treatment by a member of the MyDellMini forums.

A Mini 10v owner and forum member by the name of Anguish has already taken the netbook apart to discover how easily the unit’s RAM can be upgraded and he has taken the step to install the Macintosh OS X operating system on his mini Dell too. News is that so far he has Bluetooth and WiFi working and with some tweaking the sound should work too. The only real issue is the sleep function on the Mini 10v running OS X – to work you must disable the USB BIOS Legacy Support.

We’ve just spotted Dell’s new Mini 10v netbook a couple of days ago via its product catalog and already Dell is offering it at their online shop.  Best thing about it is that Dell is selling the Mini 10v for a low price of $299. 

It’s a bargain right? Where can you get a full-featured 10-inch netbook as cheap as that? For that price you’d get the Dell Mini 10v with Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, 10.1-inch wide-screen (1024×576), 120GB HDD, 3-cell battery and Windows XP.

Like we said in our previous coverage, the Dell Mini 10v differs from its predecessor the Mini 10 by its lighter weight.
