You’ve just bought the iPad, but you’re afraid to bring it out because it is such a hot item, and people are either going to make snide, jealous remarks around you if you bring it out, or friends may insist on borrowing it to test it. Not to mention, the iPad will sell hotly at the black market if greasy hands manage to get a hold of it.

Fortunately, Ben at Carrypad has designed an interesting DIY project for iPad owners to use: a book turned into a case. He has provided a step-by-step process on how to make one, and will not cost you that much. For easy access, he put a canvas strip secured with duck tape to be able to lift the iPad out when you want to use it. You can choose to put in a soft cloth at the bottom of the space carved for the iPad to protect the back from scratches, as well as have a cleaning cloth you can use after tinkering around with it.

With so many options to choose from in bookstores, you can put your own designs on the cover, or even use front pages of real books as a cover.  You’ll leave your friends wondering why you’ve suddenly become attached to your book, and you’re never found without carrying one.

Many institutions like schools and offices have their own branded stationery, pens and what not. How about having your own branded netbook? It’s easier than you think.

Guo Bang in China are offering DIY netbook kits to local communities in their area. It probably goes beyond branding and should appeal to gadget builders everywhere since you can supply your own RAM and hard disks and get the rest from them.

Granted, the DIY part of this endeavor are already offered by the likes of MSI and Asus, it’s still satisfying to boast that you’ve built a netbook by yourself. No word if this will be available outside of Shenzhen or if us commoners can get a hold of one since the offer is more tuned towards other manufacturers who need a quick fix when they’re running low on netbook supplies.
