From the popular monitor company comes a nice thin and light called ViewBook Pro. ViewSonic has the full specs up on their webpage but we thought to help you out by posting them here.

ViewSonic ViewBook Pro

13.3″ LED backlit 1280 x 800 display

1.3GHz Intel Core 2 Duo ULV SU7300 with GS45 + ICH9M-SFF enhanced chipset

2GB RAM

320GB HDD

Built-in 8x DVD Drive

802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR

2 x USB, 1.3MP webcam, VGA, HDMI output, multitouch trackpad, card reader, audio jacks, ExpressCard slot

4400mAh 6-cell Li-Ion battery, up to 8 hours battery life

Weight: 1.63kg

That’s certainly a lot of features to pack in a ultrathin including the ExpressCard slot and the DVD drive, though I do question the logic of putting in a disc drive inside a portable. Of course, it also packs a punch on the price. Get it from Amazon for US$889.99.

I have my own Intel Atom based media center but it’s incomplete as it is since it doesn’t play over-the-air TV and it can’t play DVDs. Giada’s Cube N7DT is a promising upgrade that can bring both of those features in one single package.

Giada Cube N7DT

DVD burner

802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth, LAN

HDMI, DVI and SPDIF out

TV Tuner

It looks like it packs almost everything you need for a media center though there was no mention of a HD audio output, which I’m sure it has. Swap in the DVD drive with a Blu-ray one and you’re all set for a complete theatre experience. And of course, you can still browse the web, play games and do Office work on this since it is still a computer after all. No info on price and availability, yet.

One thing I like about netbooks is that is doesn’t have a DVD drive, something I don’t actually use that often in my main computer as well. It lets manufacturers create a sleeker design for this portable device and also makes it so much lighter to carry around.

Gateway, a subsidiary brand of Acer, went the other direction though and crammed in a DVD burner in its new EC14D notebook. By all the common standards, this isn’t a netbook but it’s an interesting play to grab those users who still need to create and use DVDs.

Those who have been waiting for Asus’ Eee PC with a built-in multidrive would be glad to know that there is an alternative to this that would not entail buying a stand-alone DVD box. The solution can be found in the streets of Japan, created by a Tokyo-based company Century. The product? A netbook stand with a built-in, slim Panasonic DVD Super Multi-Drive.

The netbook stand’s DVD Drive reads DVD±R/+RW (8x), DVD±R DL/-RW (6x), DVD-RAM (5x) and CD-R/-RW (24x). It is compatible with Windows XP and Vista. So there goes your hopes for a DVD Drive if you’re running Linux OS on your netbooks. It connects to your netbook via USB port.

The said product goes for around $100 in Japan. Of course, we’re not really optimistic that this product will be available internationally.
