We recently reported that Carphone Warehouse had recalled their Linux webbook, as customers prefer a Windows OS over Linux.
When it comes to Eee PCs though, the return rate for Linux and Windows are similar explains Jerry Shen, Asus CEO. In Europe customers are more inclined to purchase the Linux netbook model. Overall Eee PCs have a low return rate.
Jerry Shen also shed details about a touch screen Eee PC in 2009 as well as Windows 7 coming to the Eee PCs. He explained that Eee PCs will skip Vista and instead use Windows 7 as it’s next operating system, making only Windows XP, Linux and Windows 7 being the only OS’s installed.
Easy Mode Windows XP will also be released in the Q4 of 2008. Easy Mode is for novice computer users providing a simple interface with the ability to use the full operating system.

If you are one of those adventurous Eee PC owners that have had the desire to install OS X on your netbook and turn it into a “Hackintosh” then you may be pleased to know that thanks to some persistant hackers and a new application, your sound issues - it has been virtually impossible to get sound working when using OS X on an Eee PC until now - can all be solved.

Hackers have created a work around, similar to the method used to get sound working on the MSI Wind. You need to install a different audio driver and the Apple developer tools first of all and then grab the new application that developer ipis OS X have created. Audieee allows the sound to be controlled from the menu bar on OS X, allowing you to switch between headphones/speakers as your output of choice, something that doesnt happen automatically yet but, be sure there is a hacker somewhere working on a fix for this too.

The Asus Eee PC has already had the Windows 7 treatment and it ran pretty well on the new Microsoft operating system, the pre-beta version anyway. Next netbook up to take the Windows 7 test was the MSI Wind and sure enough, it ran the OS well and passed the test with flying stars. Of course, feeling a little left out and sure that it could compete with it’s Atom based netbook cousins, the HP 2133 Mini-Note came along shortly after and has also been tested running Windows 7. Unfortunately the results aren’t quite so impressive for the HP netbook.

Frustrated that your netbook won’t allow you to play games that need a little more graphics ‘power’ to run them? Well, Asus could be just about to take gaming on their Eee PC’s to the next stage.
Asus have said that they could be releasing a netbook in the near future that could possibly have dedicated graphics that would allow gamers to run more resource intensive games. The spokesperson also said that this netbook would definitely be an Eee PC and is not to be confused with the Asus N10 which also has dedicated graphics.
This is all just a rumor right now, nothing is confirmed and Asus already have the 10 inch N10 for small screen gaming but, we’ll keep you informed of any news of the Eee PC becoming an oversized handheld console as it comes in.

JkOnTheRun received a tip from Pereira about a netbook retailing at under $300 and it isn’t the touchscreen Asus Eee PC, due to come out next year, either.
The model on offer is the Asus Eee PC 900A which is set to retail for $299 at Best Buy stores. That’s a great reduction off the original launch price of $465 in August.
However, with just a 4GB SSD, it could be worth waiting to see if the Eee PC 701SDX will come fitted with a 4GB or 8GB for the same $300 price tag before making a purchase. If you can’t wait for news on the 701SDX though and you’re looking for a cheap netbook, it seems most stores have them in stock, for now.

The netbook that created netbooks and which spawned a huge market for netbooks worldwide - the Asus Eee PC, is one year old today.
October 16th 2007 saw the arrival of the first Eee PC and since then the brand has soared in sales and become the ‘role model’ for a plethora of netbooks from different manufacturers and a plethora of different models of the Eee PC from ASUS too.
The Eee PC is only a year old but it is still the oldest netbook on the block and with the number of different models of Eee PC that ASUS are producing, there is still a lot of life in the old/young netbook yet!
Happy Birthday Eee PC!!

The Acer Aspire One has proved to be a great success since it’s launch. It’s currently ranked as the best selling notebook on Amazon.com with the ASUS Eee PC 1000H in second place.

Overall the specs are pretty much the same as the Acer Aspire One with 1GB RAM, 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 160GB hard drive, 6-cell battery and Windows XP installed. The 1000HA will feature a 10 inch display rather than an 8.9 inch display though and will retail for $30 more at $429.99.

Crave have managed to get their hands on a selection of exclusive photographs of the ever-so swanky Eee PC ‘Ultimate’ S101 and the pictures are intriguing.
Asus made the change with this new model, from the ‘usual’ Eee design of plain plastic exterior, to a sleek, brown (yes, brown, not the first colour that comes to mind when I think of a netbook but, brown it is), shiny netbook with an Atom CPU, 2gb of RAM and either a 32gb or 64 gb solid state drive. This new Eee PC will be pre-installed with Windows XP and seems to come with a 10.2 LED screen, although this isn’t confirmed. The cost of the new Eee PC is unconfirmed too but, it has been rumoured that a 32GB model will be roughly $699 and a 64GB model will set you back a not so cheap $899.

LinuxPlanet have been reviewing an Eee PC 1000 which is running Ubuntu which was pre-installed - a deal ZaReason are offering to anyone that would prefer this version of Linux on their new netbook, for $599, the same price as the Eee PC with Xandros pre-installed.
In the review, LinuxPlanet noted that despite a few problems with resolution and display size - namely, menu’s not fitting on the screen which can be partially rectified with keyboard commands but, it isn’t perfect, the EEE PC ran fairly well on Ubuntu and the review was mostly positive, complimenting the Eee Pc especially on it’s good battery life and attractive price.
