A tablet PC with a built-in keyboard, but somehow not quite like a convertible touchscreen netbook. That’s essentially what the Asus Eee Pad Slider SL101 tablet PC is. It has a 10.1-inch touchscreen display, a slide-out keyboard, and lots and lots of fun in between. I managed to get my hands on one a couple days ago, and here are my first impressions of the said device after having used it for a while.

features an all-new chassis inspired

by the natural curves of a seashell.

ASUS has created some nice-looking

netbooks, including its Swarovski-

studded Eee PC S101, but the Eee PC

1008HA takes a more subtle approach.

The system overall sports a sharp and

clean design, largely a result of the

curved panels that extend over its

edges and hide the ports. The glossy

black lid (also available in white;

blue and pink will come later this

year) is covered in a new Infusion

finish that allows the 1008HA to be

scratch resistant; but it’s far from

fingerprint resistant. The 1008HA is

thinner than most other laptops in

its class measuring 10.3 x 7 x 1.0

inches. All of the ports on the

1008HA are covered with plastic tabs,

giving this netbook its uniform look

. Despite its size and dimensions it

packs a comfortable and spacious

keyboard. Unlike the island keyboard

of the 1000HE, there are no spaces

between the raised black matte keys

which was found to be pretty flat.

ASUS keeps the correctly placed keys

it mended with the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE.

The right Shift key is full size and

directly below the Enter key. A Wi-Fi

and touchpad on/off buttons sits above

the keyboard. The trackpad on this

netbook is pretty different from the

rest. Blending in with system’s deck,

the 2.5 x 1.5-inch pad is covered with

small braille-like dots. Unlike most

netbooks, the pad had very little

friction, and navigating the desktop

didn’t require much backtracking. As

with other Eee PCs, the touchpad also

supports multitouch gestures; using

two fingers to pinch the pad and zoom

in on a picture was easy, and the

image quickly rendered in its new size.

The single mouse button was comfortable

for making selections, although we

prefer the 1000HE’s dedicated right and

left buttons. The screen is pretty

impressive with the 10.1-inch,

1024 x 600-pixel resolution backlit LED

display and thus it allows the web pages

and windows to fit to size on the screen.

From afar, the inch-thick glossy black

bezel looked as if the screen was flush

with the frame, though on a closer

inspection one can easily notice the

upright frame. Above the display, a 1.3

-megapixel Webcam provided extremely clear

images in a Skype video chat. The speakers

located at the bottom front edge of the

system allowed us to hear his voice loud

and clear from across the room. As far

as performance is concerned with the

same 1.66-GHz Intel Atom N280 processor,

1GB of RAM, and Windows XP as the ASUS

Eee PC 1000HE, not much of a change in

everyday performance or benchmarks on the

1008HA Seashell can be seen.

The Asus EEE PC 1015B is one of the best netbooks launched by Asus. This is a 10-inch netbook. It is a lot cheaper than an ipad and is more affordable by the customers. It uses AMD’s latest creations, the C-30 processor. The APU combines with the CPU and graphics processing unit on a single chip. The C-30 has AMD Radeon graphics and so it utilizes less power.

Design:

This model looks quite similar to the 1015PN and the 1015PEM models. It sports a soft touch look with black-mette body finish on the lid and the palm rest. It is available in different colour schemes like red, blue and white as well. The only drawback is the fingerprint marks on the body when it is being used regularly. It has a 10.1-inch display and sports a glossy look. But in all together the model is nice and sturdy. It also includes a backlit power button and also features a sliding door for webcam to ensure privacy for the user. It is also very travel friendly. It weighs about 2.8 pounds and measures from 10.3 X 7.1 X 0.9 to 1.4 inches.

The model is not that heat resistant but performs well and the fan is not over noisy.

Display and Audio:

Reflections do not distract the user in this model. It has a 10.1-inch screen and a resolution of 1024 X 600. The display is bright and also has wide viewing angles. The speakers are situated underneath the palm rest. The sound gets muffled if this netbook is placed anywhere else either than a hard and flat surface.

Keyboard and Touchpad:

The chiclet-styled keyboard is good to use. The right shift key and the arrow keys are a bit disappointing to use as it sometimes become frustrating.

The 3 X 1.5-inch touchpad is well spaced. It has the same soft touch treatment as the rest of the palm rest. It offers a smooth navigation experience to the user. The only drawback is the two-finger scrolling that stutters a bit. So two discrete mouse buttons are much preferred than the two-finger scrolling.

Ports:

This model includes an array of ports for a netbook. The HDMI is a good inclusion. The front side has speaker ports while the rear side has the battery pack. The left hand side is accompanied by AC power, VGA, USB 2.0, HDMI out and cooling exhaust vent. The right hand side includes multimedia card reader, headphone and microphone jacks, 2 X USB 2.0, lock slot and Ethernet as well.

In an investor conference held last April 29, Asus revealed that it recorded a net operating margin of 4.68% and a gross margin of 15.52% during the first quarter of 2011. They made the most sales during this quarter in the Asia-Pacific region which accounted for 48% of sales, followed by Europe at 37% and other regions at a combined 15%.

In a detailed breakdown, it was revealed that 56% of overall revenues for Asus during Q1 2011 came from notebooks, 19% came from motherboards and cards, 11% from others, 1% from handsets and just 13% from their Eee PCs. This 13% of revenue actually translates to 1.3 million units shipped, and Asus is planning to hit the same number of shipped units for the second quarter of 2011. With the release of the Eee Pad Transformer, perhaps sales of their Eee PCs might even increase.

Design-wise, this nettop sports a glossy black finish and blue LED. Asus is definitely gearing up this nettop as an all-around machine for work and entertainment.

The Asus Eee Box B206 is reportedly on the way to Italy this month, and is going to cost just around 379 Euros or about $492 USD. It may not be as cheap as its netbook counterparts, but this mini desktop replacement comes with an ATI Radeon HD 3400 graphics and an HDMI port. Its spec sheet also puts Bluetooth as among its list of features, which is another welcome addition especially for those who want to rid their desktops of wires. There’s no info on when and where exactly in Italy this will start shipping, but we’ll be sure to update you with that in a future post.

Apparently, Asus have indicated that they intend to create a 12 inch netbook in the near future. It is destined to be an ‘ultra thin model’ according to Digitimes but, the question is – when does a netbook become too big to be classed as a ‘netbook’?

Asus created the netbook and once upon a time the netbook was a 7inch, highly portable unit that wasn’t truly a notebook and the netbook tag fitted the product perfectly. Now, netbooks have bulked themselves out and we see 10.2″ models, for example the ‘top of the range’ S101 Eee PC from Asus themselves. 10.2″ is ok, we’re used to that but, 12 inch…..that’s a notebook isn’t it? Well, yes, that’s what Asustek have decided, their new 12″ model will not be tagged as a netbook – Asus are adding to the notebook range in their collection of ‘books’ and the notebook tag fits this model a little better, it’s all very well clinging on to the netbook tag, netbooks are incredibly and increasingly popular so it’s understandable why any company would tag their products as a netbook if they can get away with it but, Asus seem happy to move their bigger model into the ‘notebook’ range, although the tie-in to the Eee PC range should keep that netbook tag working for the company regardless of the size of screen.

The 12″ netbook, will be a part of the ZX series and will be of similar specification to the S101. With specs like that and the inclusion of a larger screen with 16:10 aspect ratio, Asustek could be onto a winner, again. Digitimes’ sources have predicted the unit will cost below NT$30,000.

To clarify where the netbook line stopped and the notebook line started, Asus president Jerry Shen stated: “that any device with display larger than 10.x-inches is not a netbook. Related devices with 11-inch or larger displays will be part of the company’s Asus brand”. So thats clear then, 12″ is a notebook, the man said so.

There are many rebranded versions of the MSI Wind in Asia and Europe, which are simply the MSI netbook with a different name attached to them. It seems that customers are clambering to buy these ‘clones’ of the Wind and with a solid build and decent specs for a netbook, it’s easy to see why.

Ironically, 700,000 sales would equal the amount of Asus Eee PC’s sold in September 08 which clearly shows that MSI still have a long way to go if they are going to compete with Asus in this market.
