Firefox has introduced version 9.0 of their browser to the Android market to support Android tablets running Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich.

Firefox has a new experience for tablets that leverages the large screen size and makes mobile Web browsing more intuitive. Along with intuitive controls via the Awesome Bar, when in landscape mode it shows the tabs in use on the left hand side. These disappear when you switch around to portrait mode, giving you the entire screen to work with.

Tabs are listed in a top left menu and they can be easily hidden when not needed. Tabs are shown as thumbnails in the left panel of Firefox while still viewing full websites on the right side of the screen. Users can swipe to the left to hide tabs for a full screen view.

The new Firefox is best for developers as it offers HTML5 Input Tag for Camera Access and HTML5 Form Validation. As per the company, “Developers can build mobile websites and Web apps that allow you to use the camera on an Android phone or tablet to take pictures, scan bar codes and more without leaving Firefox.”

Firefox supports the HTML5 Form Validation API which automatically validates website form fields like numbers, emails and URLs without developers needing to write a custom code or use a third-party library.

Avid Android tablet users will no doubt prefer using one of the staples of a good Web browsing experience when they are trying to enjoy the Internet on the go. That is, more people are probably relying on today’s most popular Web browser, Firefox, to spruce up their Web surfing experience no matter what time of day. Fortunately, Mozilla knows this all too well, and currently Firefox for tablets is being showered with UI enhancements of all sorts to make it much better than it already is.
Soon, Google’s Chrome OS won’t be the only web-based OS in town. If things go according to plan, Mozilla is set to launch its own web-based OS for handheld and other mobile devices with the help of HTML5. Mozilla plans on doing this through a project called “Boot to Gecko” (B2G) which they announced today through the Google groups forums. Mozilla aims to roll out a new standalone operating system for the open Web because it believes that “the web can displace proprietary, single-vendor stacks for application development.”

Google’s Chrome OS might not yet be upon us but we have a nice alternative in the form of BrowserLinux. This Linux distribution is based on Puppy Linux, in itself a very light OS, which was made even lighter by only including the most basic features of a web browser via Firefox, music player and PDF reader. This OS weighs in at only 78MB in disk space. This makes it very ideal for those netbook models that had very little disk space in them like the first Acer Aspire One and the EeePC 2G. And not only that, it even has a smaller package that’s only 68MB if you’re really stingy.

You can install it in the netbook’s built-in drive or in a USB, just make sure your thumb drive is fast enough for it to boot from. And if you feel the need for a bit more, their site has links for installing office apps, an email client and Wine for running Windows programs. You can also install other Linux apps with a little elbow grease and know-how.

If you have an old computer that’s not getting any use but can still work and connect to the net, this might be a good time to dust it off and put in BrowserLinux. The small size will make browsing snappier since there’s no other apps hogging resources, it would make it a good candidate to install not only in netbooks but handheld UMPCs and nettops as well. I might even use it as a virtual machine since it looks perfect for my browser-based work.

The next update to Firefox will enable the browser to detect the orientation of any accelerometer-equipped device on which it is running. This way, the browser itself can actually actively adapt to the orientation being used and possibly offer a few advantages, among which are automatic rotation in order to match the current orientation and offer additional screen space. Notebooks such as Lenovo’s ThinkPads and Apple’s MacBooks come with accelerometers built-in to them, but I think it would be rather troublesome to have to lift your 2-kilo computer off the table just to see this feature in action. I immediately thought of netbooks, with their small footprint and relatively light weight. This will easily be my favorite Firefox feature once netbooks with built-in accelerometers are available. Then we can all view reading materials such as e-books and other documents more conveniently on our small, unassuming netbooks. Can’t wait for it either? Well, let’s hope the manufacturers are working on it.

The first tip is of how to remove the tab button, which JKK point out that Ctrl + T does the job just as well, if not quicker. Another small tip poised is removing the magnifying glass from the search box. Admittedly it doesn’t give you much extra space but, enough to warrant it as a handy tip. Lifehacker also explain how to remove the back and forward button from the display, along with stop/reload. To remove these buttons the userChrome.css file needs to be edited but, you can pick and choose which bits of the tips you want to use for yourself. While there’s many tips and tricks for optimizing your web browsing, one Firefox and netbook user, has created an extension for Firefox to allow you to optimize the look of your browser, to make the best of the viewing space. With the addon you can gain up to 60 pixels vertically, which is equal to about 10% of the viewing space on a netbook with a 10 inch display. You just need to download the addon Meerkat, install and restart the browser.

TechCrunch’s “dead simple and dirt cheap touch screen web tablet to surf the web,” called the CrunchPad, has been given the go signal by Mark Finkle to use Fennec, Mozilla’s open-source mobile web browser. Firefox was actually Michael Arrington’s first choice for a browser for CrunchPad, but Mark Finkle suggests that Fennec might be more suitable.

Fennec is designed to work well on mobile-class processors with tighter memory requirements. Fennec is also designed for touchscreens and supports the same add-ons mechanism as Firefox. Since Fennec is built on XULRunner, other XUL-based apps (Songbird, Chatzilla) get a free runtime.

So if you’re one of the few people who have access to a CrunchPad prototype, just go ahead and try it out to see how well it works.
