Rumors have been going around the web that Google are to hold an event next week, Tuesday 7th December, where they will unveil their own branded netbook, running the Chrome OS. The event was at first just speculation but, has now been confirmed and Engadget will be attending the event. This hopefully means the rumors surrounding the release of the Chrome OS netbook will also turn out to be true. Little is known about the Google netbook at the moment.

It’s thought that the Chrome OS however, is still in beta, which is why details are so scarce. It’s also been said that only around 65,000 Google netbooks will be produced, presumably mostly available to developers, instead of being a mass market device. So for those looking to get hold of one of this netbooks, you may be disappointed but, hopefully we will find out more information on the Google Chrome OS netbook on Tuesday.

Opsie! deniying rumors that flew out recently that they will be launching the first ever Google Chrome netbook, Acer has issued an official press statement that these rumors are not true. According to Acer, while they believe that Google Chrome OS is an exciting product, unfortunately, the company has not immediate plans for a Google Chrome netbook yet.

Just the same, Acer believes that Google Chrome OS is a very promising product and that the company will be interested in such product. Hence, Acer will be following the development of Google Chrome OS and possibly come up with a netbook powered by the said PS.

Here’s the full press release:

Manno, 17 May 2010 – Despite recent rumours in the press regarding the launch of Chrome OS based netbooks at Computex, Acer today confirms that it has no short-term plans for such a product.

Acer believes that Google Chrome OS is without doubt an exciting product announcement and deserves it’s full attention as well as an in-depth study of its potential from a consumers perspective.

Acer is naturally interested in any product or service that enhances the overall experience of its products and will of course be following the development and progress of Google Chrome and the evolution of Google’s overall product strategy very closely.

Ever wondered what happened to what used to be over-hyped Chrome OS? It’s been quite awhile since we heard something about this. But now, Venture Beat is reporting that the Google Chrome OS will be gracing the Computex 2010 gig happening in Taipei this coming June 1. How I wish I could go there!

Anyway, guess which netbook brand earned the right to demo the new Google Chrome OS? None other than Acer which will be launching a Chrome OS device which up to now is not clear whether its a netbook or smartbook. (my guess?tablet)

In case you forgot already, Google is supposed to released the Chrome OS this year. So, the Computex seems to be the most appropriate time if Google is planning to market this OS for netbooks and tablet use.

Any guesses on what Acer will be launching?

While the actual release of Google’s Chrome OS will likely coincide with their own GoogleBook launch, one intrepid dev rebuilt the current version of Chromium, the beta version of the OS.

Hexxeh baked in a lot of new features in this new build which they’ve dubbed “Flow”. If you want to grab the installer, you can download Flow but first, check the netbook compatibility list if your own unit is supported. A few of the features are user-customizable menus, NVIDIA ION support, Velocity-based updating and battery life improvements.

Google Chrome OS is a browser-based operating system which focuses on using apps from the cloud like Gmail and Google Docs. It’s built on top of Linux and will be available later this year for the low, low price of free (we hope, it’s from Google after all).

We have another round of spec leaks here but this time it’s for the ever-mysterious Google netbook. Here’s the specs I grabbed:

10.1″ 1280×720 HD-ready multitouch screen

NVIDIA Tegra

ARM-based processor

Storage: 64GB SSD

2GB RAM

WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G, Ethernet, GPS (optional)

USB, webcam, 3.5mm audio jack, multi-card reader

4 or 6 cell battery

Google Chrome OS with all the other Google apps like Google Earth,Google Wave, Google Voice, etc.

As mentioned previously, this is expected to launch during the holiday season next year 2010 . Reports also says that it will be priced at sub-$300 and subsidized and it will be Google that will be selling it directly as well as through 3G carriers. Now all these are just speculation since Google has kept mum on the actual specs of the device but with a big player like this entering the netbook space, you can be sure that it will cause quite a stir in the months to come.

Sascha Pallenberg over at the Netbook World Summit discusses some of his predictions on the state of netbooks for the next year. Here are some of the highlights for netbooks:

Netbooks at 250 euros or $300 with the new Intel Pine Trail processor.

Linux start to get into more netbooks with the entry of Moblin and Jolicloud, as well as Google’s Chrome OS. This will really be tough for Windows 7 to go against for the netbook market.

Tablets are going to be big, especially if the Apple Tablet pushes through.

Netvertibles or tablet netbooks will also have their place if they are priced right and deliver performance similar to the more expensive tablet notebooks.

Smartbooks will be very aggressive due to the low price they have.

I’m sure Sascha’s prediction will be on spot though currently we still need to see how those smartbooks and netvertibles will pan out. I’ve seen a few tablet netbooks and they still have to be at a better price point or else people will just pick regular netbooks. Also, those tablets better show up since I’m really itching to grab one.

Now that Chrome OS has officially been unveiled, Google is getting aboard the netbook train as well. It’s been their plan to talk to manufacturers like HP, Asus and Qualcomm and discuss how to integrate the new operating system in their future netbooks.

Well it seems Google is zooming in on a single manufacturer instead to build the new netbook directly for them. They are planning to sell it under the Google brand as opposed to bundling the OS with another firm’s devices. Spec-wise, the only thing for sure known is that it will be mobile enabled with the possibility of a carrier subsidy thrown in. You’ll have to wait on this one though, since the slated release is going to be in the holiday season of 2010.

Google is plunging right into the hardware game with this new netbook and the Nexus One smartphone. Personally, I have no doubt they’ll become a major player in the netbook game in no time with all the great apps they make that can be bundled into these devices at the low, low price of free. As we say here locally about netbooks: the more competition, the better it is for us the consumer!

If you’ve been dying to test drive Google Chrome OS but is not particularly sure whether your netbook could run the OS succesfully, netbooks listed on the chart were all tested by the Google Chromium developers.

Among the netbooks on the list include old netbooks such as the Eee PC 700, Eee PC 900, Toshiba Mini NB200 and NB205, and Eee PC 1000 with SSD.

Of course other newer netbooks were also tested to run the Chrome OS succesfully. These include the HP Mini 5101, Lenovo IdeaPad S10v among other newer netbooks.

The Google list also include other issues you need to consider when installing the Chrome OS on your netbooks.

If you’ve been raring to test out the early build of Google Chrome OS that came out recently, here’s a quick way of doing it. The trick is getting an image file of the source code and storing it on a USB key then booting your netbook via the USB.

It’s as simple as that, and the Engadget folks put up a video (which is rather a little hazy) for all of us netbook fans to admire and be awed about.

This is different from the Virtual Machines that were demoed to run the Google Chrome OS. This is sort of the “real deal” when it comes to running the Chrome OS.

If you want to test it out on your netbook (doesn’t have to be Dell), get the source file here and follow the instructions on this site.

and check out Engadgets video below:
