Have you got the time? To port Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich so that it is perfectly usable on a laptop computer? Well, one guy (codename leemgs) did, and he has now posted about it on YouTube for all to see. He hasn’t exactly laid out all the details as to how it was possible to install ICS on his full-size Samsung Sens R60 laptop, but in the video he posted, it can be seen that the OS is actually installed in a partition alongside other operating systems which likely include Windows and other Linux variants. This is what he had to say about the installation and the experience:

I ported the latest Android full source including several devices (e.g: Graphics, Wireless LAN, Wired LAN, Camera, Bluetooth, Sound, USB 2.0) into Intel X86-based Samsung Laptop successfully as a hobby when I was free. Now, this video shows Android ICS 4.0.4 on Samsung laptop R60+. In my experience, Android based laptop is useful sufficiently when I tested some functions like usability and convenience and performance and mobility.

Fancy spending a bit of your time doing this yourself? Take a look at what it looks like first by watching the video below, and then decide. It should be fun.
According to Larry’s page where the announcement was found, it is because of the success made in most lower-priced tablets running in Android and so does Google in the near future.

The “focus” as being emphasized could either mean the pursuance for Nexus Tablet or a whole different plane due to forced cutting cost and dropping prices.

No other information is there yet to reveal aside from the memorable “focus” mentioned earlier. Well, what should be the focus then is the latest report regarding Google-Asus co-branded tablet to be priced at $250 or lesser hitting the market by July.

What do you think then? It is a pretty obvious why Google looks like a money-making machine dealing with standards rather adding with the “high”.

Google having the biggest reputation as one of the leading search engine in the internet world must have been that one reason why until now the company’s trying out every now and then the bits and pieces of its Chromebooks.

A pretty slow and sluggish Intel Atom low power processors in the line of Google Chrome OS but at least at the other side of it, a decent battery life can be expected. Lately then, improvements have been marked as Intel Celeron processors are behind the improving speed within Chromebooks which could only mean that a lot can be expected in the future.

That future would be Chromebooks running in an Intel Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge processors. But just lately, a new code Coreboot BIOS has been slowly noted by Phoronix. That exactly supports the two processors mentioned and indeed future is getting nearer or have already come.

Now the real future is in your hands if Chromebooks can now be marked as a one good step or not. With still the ongoing buzz that additionally ARM-based processors are as well bugging in the background, chromebooks could soon be a faster future.

Due to the tight rivalry among different kinds of tablet PCs today, well-known and even neophyte vendors need to go on for a hit strategy to inspire more of the targeted consumers. Mostly manufacturers believed that, one common way of maintaining the interest of the public is by having lower-priced tablet PCs.

Reports about the upcoming Google tablet has been circulating for days. Sources say that in order to contend with Amazon Kindle tablets, Google wants to collaborate with Asustek Computer to release a 7-inch budget tablet PC in May or June this year. It is then anticipated to give cost strain among other tablet vendors including Lenovo, Samsung Electronics and Acer.

The latest Kindle Fire from Amazon which is set to release in the third quarter of 2012 is said to cost between 199 and 299 US Dollars. With this, Google will price its tablet PC at $199 to even cut off the cost gain.

Google and Asus are getting ready to showcase a new 7-inch tablet PC carrying the brand names of both of these two companies. This device will likely be released in May 2012, at a selling price of around $199 to 249.

This tablet will compete against the Amazon Kindle Fire, which has enjoyed great success since the latter part of 2011 when it was launched.

At around that time, Google had been looking for a partner to develop its new tablet PC. HTC was one of the companies that Google approached, although the two companies were not able to see eye to eye on the project.

Allegedly, HTC wanted to oversee the development of the tablet PC and was not amenable to manufacturing a budget-friendly tablet which might be detrimental to its image as a company. Meanwhile, Acer was also rejected because it did not have R&D capability. Asustek, however, was able to meet the demands of Google as an ODM and its record of creating high-quality product.

For its part, Asustek was interested in the tie-up because it wanted to improve on its Android devices as well as be able to study Google’s technologies in the creation of software. Also, the partnership could be their ticket to entering the US tablet market.

The new tablet will be the first to access the newly-created Google Play store.

With so many companies competing to produce the best tablet PCs, it seemed only a matter of time before Google joined the bandwagon. This year, this wish of avid Google fans could become a reality.

The Google tablet is expected to have a 7-inch screen with a pixel display resolution of 1280 x 800. This size could mean that it is set to compete with the likes of the Amazon Kindle Fire which has a resolution of 1024 x 600. The Kindle Fire was widely successful in the latter part of last year, selling around 5.3 million units. It could even contend with the rumored smaller version of the iPad, the iPad mini.

Supposedly, Google has ordered around 1.5 million to 2 million units of the ICS-powered tablet. If it will target the same demographic as the Kindle Fire, it will have a price of around $199. However, there is also the chance that it will be targeted as a premium device, in which case it will be priced higher.

In any case, Google is also planning to acquire Motorola, which could mean that the Motorola tablets might also be sold with its brand in the future. These include the 10.1-inch Xoom tablet, the 10.1-inch Xoom 2 or Xyboard, and the the 8.2-inch Xyboard.

Google hasn’t released any official announcement regarding these rumors.

“There are now over 700,000 Android devices activated every day,” Andy Rubin, Senior Vice President of Mobile at Google confirmed this week via Twitter.

700,000 maybe a big number, but not for Google.

700,000 actually shows that Android activations are slowing rather than growing based on previous information from Google. Way back in June, Rubin tweeted that Google was activating 500,000 devices a day “and it’s growing at 4.4% w/w”.

That means Android has added 200,000 activations per day since June, which is equal to only a growth of around 1.4% a day. This is considerably lower than the 4.4% Google was aiming for. If Kindle Fire activations are included in this data, then that could mean worse for Google.

Far from unifying the smartphone and tablet PC markets, it looks like the introduction of Google Android 4.0 a.k.a. Ice Cream Sandwich may have made the gap between the two market spaces even wider. Android 4.0 brings many improvements over Honeycomb, its predecessor which can be found on many of today’s most popular smartphones and a handful of tablet PCs. Although you might think that PC vendors would love the idea of Google unifying all development efforts towards just one operating system, the reality is a lot more complicated than that.

At the official announcement Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich yesterday, the focus was mainly on Samsung’s new Galaxy Nexus, a device with a very large screen, to be sure, but is certainly not something that would be considered a tablet PC. What has gotten certain PC makers and some market watchers a bit worried is the fact that Google made no mention of tablets at all at yesterday’s official Ice Cream Sandwich announcement. Does this mean there will be a renewed focus on the smartphone space and tablet PC makers will be left out of from now on?

This is a major concern for tablet PC makers who are pinning their hopes on Android to compete with Apple’s iPad. With the imminent launch of the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime, Google is expected to give a lot more than just a few new UI enhancements and novel features for the market of Android tablets to really catch up to the competition.

With Nokia’s defection and Intel’s relative silence regarding the subject, you might think that you’ve already seen the last of the MeeGo operating system. Well, perhaps, but Intel is keeping MeeGo alive in cooperation with Samsung in a new Linux-based open-source mobile OS initiative called the Tizen project. A post on the official Tizen web site says that it is a new platform intended for use in a number of different ways such as in smartphones, tablets, netbooks, smart TVs and even in-vehicle entertainment devices. Since it was announced only yesterday, Tizen is currently still picking up steam. So far, Intel and Samsung are onboard, and a report on DigiTimes says that it has already won support from the likes of SK Telecom, NTT DoCoMo, and Panasonic Mobile Communications.

At the same time, it is said that Asus and Acer are also coming on board, to add development to this new fledgeling OS. HTC is undecided. This new alliance of tech giants will have to go through a lot of hoops in order to surpass the success of current mainstream options like iOS and Android in the mobile space, but perhaps it will find better luck in other sectors of the consumer electronics market. For Asus, working on Tizen would probably be just like putting out a new netbook that runs MeeGo instead of Windows or Linux.

Avid Android tablet users will no doubt prefer using one of the staples of a good Web browsing experience when they are trying to enjoy the Internet on the go. That is, more people are probably relying on today’s most popular Web browser, Firefox, to spruce up their Web surfing experience no matter what time of day. Fortunately, Mozilla knows this all too well, and currently Firefox for tablets is being showered with UI enhancements of all sorts to make it much better than it already is.
