Ever since Amazon divulged the fact that its latest tablet e-book reader called the Kindle Fire was running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a lot of people have wanted to learn one thing: can it be rooted? Well, actually, some people would say that it’s only a matter of time until the Kindle Fire gets rooted, since the device is indeed running some form of Android, has a USB port, and can go into mass storage mode once connected to a computer. But there are cases wherein rooting is prohibited due to a device having a locked bootloader (this has happened to devices from other manufacturers several times in the past).

The director of Amazon’s Silk browser Jon Jenkins has shed some light on the matter in a talk with PC Magazine. “It’s going to get rooted,” says Jenkins, “and what you do after you root it is up to you.” Well, that certainly clears one thing up: if you want to root the Kindle Fire, Amazon won’t get in your way. After all, when you pay a good $200 for an electronic device, you should be able to do with it whatever you want. No matter if certain companies tell you otherwise (and after charging you much higher, at that).

While traditionally robot battles usually ended with one of the robots being destroyed, a new way has been created, leaving the robots in tact. The nBot robot several pieces of equipment, including an Eee PC netbook. The netbook is attached to the robot and the web cam streams the video of the battle to the control center. The control center is a PC and the stats of the battle are uploaded to a server.

Also on the robot is a movable arm, which is controlled by an Xbox 360 controller. On the end of the arm is a laser pointer. Aiming and firing is also controlled by the 360 controller. Last but not least, there is also a photo resistor on the robot. The aim is to use your laser to hit the photo resister on the other robot to decrease it’s health, which is tracked on the server.

While tablets are becoming more and more popular, with many manufacturers releasing their own, there’s still netbook owners who love nothing more than to transform their run of the mill netbook into a touchscreen tablet. The latest mod is from EeeUser forum member sp1kez. He’s turned an old Asus Eee PC 1000HD into a touch screen device.

The netbook usually comes with Xandros Linux or Windows XP but, for the tablet mod, Windows 7 has been chosen as the operating system. Several touch input optimizations have also been put in place, giving the taskbar larger icons and enabling multitouch gestures. The mod is still being worked on, with sp1kez saying he needs to “work on adding the bezel around the screen now” but, you can see a video of the modified 1000HD after the jump. While it’s not the first tablet mod we’ve seen and it won’t be the last, it’s always interesting to see how users are modding their devices. The latest mod turns the Dell Mini 9 into a tablet. Not only that but, it has a working touchscreen and accelerometer. A video has been posted up of the mod in action which shows the touch screen working as well as the accelerometer that was added. While it isn’t as smooth as say, the iPad at how quick and smoothly it auto rotates, it’s definitely something worth boasting about.

To some it may seem rather daunting but, has been described as rather simple. You will however need some technical know how to pull it off. The basics of the mod however, is to remove the keyboard, add a touchscreen film to the screen and add some software tweaks. You can view the video of the Dell “once a netbook” Mini 9 after the jump.
Now that Dell actually has plans to release a set of touchscreen tablet slates soon, I wonder what’s the use of getting a Dell Mini 9 modded into a tablet. For the sheer awesome geek cred of course!

The B-rock is now selling his beloved tablet netbook to fund some important housing choices and you can help him out. He’s offering a lot to go with the modded device including a lot of internal gadgets like a TV tuner, accelerometer, GPS, and Bluetooth plus a maxed out rig of 2GB RAM and 32GB SSD. He’s also up for a couple of weeks worth of after-sales tech support should you need it.

If you think you’ve heard about this before, well it was featured in a lot of blogs before and he did previously put it up for sale as a hackintosh though Apple balked at that and that sale didn’t go through. If you want to grab this fine little device, head over to eBay right now and bid on it! B-rock will ship to folks in North America and some parts of Europe.

This can increase your resolution to 1024 x 768 or 1152 x 864 but it won’t increase your physical pixels. So expect some squashed images from this hack. I’d personally just use this hack if I had a program that needed a higher resolution and won’t work without it.

Sure this tablet mod isn’t the first one with seen, with a rebadged MSI Wind U100 most recently turned into a slider, like the VAIO UX. This time around, one modder has hacked his U100 to resemble the upcoming iPad from Apple. The keyboard was removed from the netbook, a touchscreen added and what really makes it look like more of an iPad than the regular tablet mods, is that alexbates, founder of InsanelyWind added OS X to it with customisations. He also cites that, not only does it look like an iPad but, the specs of it, far exceed that of the iPad with it having “10 times the storage, twice the speed, external video (VGA), webcam, USB ports, and built-in multi card reader.”

This isn’t the first touchscreen mod made to a netbook and it certainly won’t be the last but, for anyone with the Dell Mini 10v, it could be very interesting. Weathejx of MyDellMini forums, explains he was jealous of the touchscreen display mod for the Dell Mini 9, so had a go at creating the mod for the Mini 10v. Which he’s done, with successful results.

The kit used, was a Hoda kit, which cost $85. Unfortunately, the cables packaged with the kit, didn’t work on the Mini 10v, so it needed tweaking before it would work, which means those who aren’t that technical minded, probably won’t be able to pull the mod off without help. It took several dissasembles and reassembles of the netbook before it worked fully. It also required parts of the case to be cut away, as well as some soldering.

Unfortunately the video quality isn’t that great but, it’s clear enough to see how well the mod turned out.

Adding a Broadcom HD video accelerator to a netbook is nothing new and with some netbooks, it’s as easy as just plugging it into a free mini PCI-e slot. For other netbooks however, it’s slightly harder and requires some soldering. Unfortunately the Eee PC 901 falls into the second category.

Traditionally, the mod is done to 10 inch netbooks and Brad Linder reports it’s the first time he’s seen the hack done on a 9 inch netbook. Firstly, after taking the back off to access the motherboard, you’ll need to solder on a second mini PCI-e slot, the same was as you would if adding 3G to the netbook. It then requires some more modding before the Broadcom Crystal HD Accelerator will actually work on the netbook. You can see how EeeUser member horakus got it working here.
