I’m pretty sure most of you are using your beloved netbooks for watching movies while on the go. It’s a pretty good setup actually. You have a 10-inch netbook loaded with 1 to 2GB of RAM and an external hard drive that can hold up several movies. Hooked them up together and you’d get your movie fix anywhere, anytime.

While this may work for most of us. The thing is, the movie quality that we get from this setup is good only for standard movie viewing. Most netbooks will not allow us to watch movies in at least 720p resolution.

Enter Intel’s plan of bringing its Cedar Trail-M Atom chipset which will probably be available by second half of June 2001. According to Fudzilla, this new platform will fully support 1080p HD Video plus better handling of other media and graphics. It will also support HDMI output to make it easy for us to hookup netbooks on our HDTV.

But that’s in 2011. In the meantime, we have to contend with watching low-quality movies on our netbooks.

While we’re all awash with news about Intel’s new processors, let’s not forget that the previous model netbooks are still available and are still alive and kicking. In particular, those netbooks like the MSI WInd U110 that run have GMA 500 graphics will still do an excellent job for playing HD video. For those that have Windows machines, there’s no problem in taking advantage of this.

But for our more daring Linux brethren, they have been left in the cold in this respect, until now. Linux Tipps has the low-down on how to use a Video Acceleration API to get your penguin OS up to speed to enjoy HD. This tip was done in Ubuntu Linux but I’m sure it can be pulled off on other variants of the OS.

Hit the link below to get more info, though be warned that this does need a bit of know how to pull off.

Soon, our netbooks will have the capability to truly display videos in all their 1080p HD goodness. Thanks to Broadcom’s Crystal HD Enhanced Media Accelerator Mini PCI-e card, not will only our netbooks enable HD video but view content heavy Flash content as well. This includes HD videos on YouTube, CBS, BBC iPlayer, Pandora.tv among others.

Even more exciting is the fact that with this HD solution netbooks will be able to do this even with 100% CPU usage, minus frame drops or stuttering.

As for the netbooks that will be carrying this HD solution, the HP Mini 110 XP Edition is the most likely candidate.

This Broadcom video shows how the HP Mini 110 carries HD video playback as against the Lenovo S10.
