Whether or not you are affected by the rumored PadFone delays that were reported on here recently, here’s your chance to ogle the said Android-powered hybrid device from the good of Taiwan-based Asus. The Asus PadFone has just made its way to Taiwan shores and now, it has been featured in an unboxing video of its own which also includes bits about the PadFone Station Dock. The Station Dock is of course the keyboard dock to which you can plug the tablet part into so that it effectively becomes something similar to the Asus Transformer. See more of these devices for yourself via the Asus PadFone unboxing video below.
Those of you waiting on the official release of the Asus Padfone may need to wait a little while longer in certain regions, as the device is unlikely to make it to the market at the originally scheduled release dates. And no, this time Android 4.0 ICS isn’t the one to blame.

As it turns out, the Asus smartphone/tablet hybrid Padfone is being delayed due to the current lack of availability of Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processors. This is according to a tweet posted on the Asus Indonesia Twitter page. As you can imagine, it will not be possible to release the Padfone without the processor that’s supposed to make it run, so for now it will be delayed until Qualcomm sorts everything out.

Asus can only say that the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chip shortage is affecting not just them, but in fact all of Qualcomm’s customers. Now, that doesn’t exactly do anything to fix the problem, but at least Asus is honest and it seems it’s not really their fault that the Padfone is being delayed, anyway.

While waiting for Windows 8, many notebook manufacturers are now planning to have their own hybrid tablet/notebook designs out. This includes Toshiba’s Portege M930, a 13.3-inch laptop prototype that can be transformed into a slate.

The concept was showcased at CES 2012 and is awfully reminiscent of the Asus Eee Pad Slider, although it comes in a brightly colored red case with a larger 13.3-inch display. This has a 1280×800 screen resolution, but its most important feature is the presence of a digitizer that adds stylus support.

While it did not say much about the prototype’s hardware specs, Toshiba did specify that it runs on an ultra-low voltage Core i5 CPU. This 17W processor is a nice fit for such a notebook, and is also used by Toshiba to operate the 13.3-inch display of its creation.

Toshiba has also configured the Portege M930 prototype with 4GB of DDR3 memory as well as a 256GB solid state drive. Additional features include 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and Ethernet as well as dual USB 2.0 sockets, HDMI, an SD reader and separate headphone and mic ports.

Toshiba hasn’t mentioned anything about its pricing or availability. So, it wouldn’t be that surprising if this prototype will never make it into production.

The UK branch of MSI have put their word out on what they will be doing about the ban on XP being installed on Hybrid devices. The MSI Wind U115, which uses SSD and HDD for storage will not be recalled from stores in the UK, but rather, stay on the shelves until the stock is gone.

From the end of July, MSI will stop producing the U115 by request of Microsoft. Whether any more will be produced before then, Richard Stewart, UK Marketing Manager for MSI didn’t specify, except that production will cease at the end of July. So if you haven’t picked the hybrid netbook up yet and it appeals to you, nows the time before it’s too late and becomes a high priced ebay item.

The word Hybrid in its name comes from the fact that it will have both an SSD and a hard drive for storage (though the SSD will be used primarily for the netbook’s OS). And besides which, the MSI Wind U115 also boasts remarkable battery life. A recent test even showed us that it can run up to 14 hours — on a single charge. That’s something you don’t see on netbooks everyday. UMPCFever just got their hands on one, and as expected they’ve done a first round of unboxing shots before the real review begins. See the full set of photos via the link to their site below.
