Sadly, the new Eee PC 1201PN won’t come with NVIDIA’s Optimus which allows automatic switching on and off of its ION graphics based on what’s running on the computer. The reason seems to be that the computer firm wants to roll out a next-gen GPU-enabled notebook quickly and has no time to integrate the feature.

This has been confirmed by Nvidia France. Sadly, the presence of Optimus was actually confirmed in releases before. So if you’ve been wanting an Optimus Eee PC, sit tight. Asus will be releasing an update with the feature later this year.

Many have been disappointed with the graphics capabilities of netbooks, especially the lack of a GPU. Users are missing out on HD videos on the internet, watching high-def movies and playing some of the newer games. And so NVIDIA and Broadcom offered their own solution to this problem. Netbooked has the results from the bout between the two chips: the ION and Crystal HD Decoder.

In the final tally, Crystal HD seems to be the big winner and with it you can enjoy great HD video though it doesn’t perform as well as the ION on gaming. It only sips a bit of battery juice when on use so you can enjoy a long movie marathon on a single charge. This must be why Intel picked them to accompany their new motherboards and machines.

Shenzhen never ceases to amaze me. The Chinese technology capital, while not always at the forefront of innovation, is the leader when it comes to making cheap devices. Now they are bringing us HD-capable netbooks by bundling in NVIDIA’s ION graphics in the newer devices rolling out the production line.

The one pictured above is the first ION netbook from Shanzhai, the S30, sporting a familiar Acer Aspire chassis. It does eat up a lot of power though so fair warning if you really want to get one for some sweet 1080p playback. You also might need to fly to China for this one since it’s only set to sell locally for now.

Besides being able to browse the Web freely away from your desktop and dealing with small bits of office work on the go, netbooks offer mild convenience: light gaming. NVIDIA’s Ion graphics chipset makes netbooks viable gaming devices, and one such example is the Samsung N510. With its 11.6-inch screen, gaming is more pleasurable than on Sony’s PSP or Nintendo’s DSi. Above is a video of the Samsung N510 being used to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 at the lowest graphics settings and a resolution of 800×600. It may not be me fully high-definition gaming, but it certainly does look enjoyable. ION delivered a playable 20-30 (guesstimated average) frames per second, and acceptable graphics quality. Watch the video and see for yourself.

A company called Rambus which designs high-speed memory chips, claims that NVIDIA has violated five of their patents relating to dynamic-random access memory or DRAM. This also relates to memory controllers, which can be found on either graphics cards or motherboards, and NVIDIA has a business of selling both.

A U.S. International Trade Commission judge in Washington has just ruled that NVIDIA is violating three of the patents being claimed by Rambus, and mentioned that the other two are invalid. This brings us a rather interesting situation, because after the full commission has finished reviewing the case put forth by Rambus against NVIDIA and it is found that there has indeed been a patent violation, products using NVIDIA graphics cards or chipsets may be banned from import for a period of time.
All-in-one PCs have been all the rage recently. But did you know that instead of a screen, a PC’s innards can be packed alongside an integrated projector as well? This is exactly what MSI is trying to accomplish with their Projector PC concept, and so far it looks like they have succeeded.

They’ve displayed a prototype at CES in Las Vegas and revealed a bit about its system specs. All in, it looks to be a nettop (with NVIDIA’s ION graphics chipset using an unidentified version of Intel’s Atom processor, 3.5mm headphone jack, HDMI out, four USB ports and a built-in DVD writer) combined with a mid-range projector that can output 1080p on a 60-inch diagonal space.

MSI plans to launch this Projector PC by the third quarter of this year, so if playing Facebook games at 1080p is your thing, watch out for it then.

While a lot of people seem to be perfectly content with using the iPhone’s on-screen virtual keyboard for typing duties, there are still those who would like to see a physical QWERTY keyboard attached for versatility. A company named Ion, which usually makes USB turntables and cassette decks, has now acted to turn this dream of many into a reality.

A new product of theirs called iType can accommodate any iPhone in its special dock and function as a near full-sized physical QWERTY keyboard. And it doesn’t suck off power from the phone’s batteries. In fact, it may even charge the iPhone via the docking solution it uses to connect to it.

Two prototypes of the iType were present at CES 2010, according to Register Hardware, and the company has mentioned that it sees a rough Q2 release date with a £70 (about $112 USD) price tag.

Some people might rave at the possibility that you could add NVIDIA’s Ion 2 via a mini-PCIe card to existing netbooks, but this writer doesn’t. Don’t get me wrong, I once enjoyed gaming on my netbooks too, but to have this sort of Frankenstein solution isn’t just irritating, it’s also rather pointless.

A couple of sites are theorizing that NVIDIA could release the Ion 2 as an add-on card that connects to a mini-PCIe card slot, and while it might be an interesting possibility, you have to ask yourself, is all the trouble of dismantling a netbook and attaching the addon card really worth it (and that’s before you consider the fact that this instantly voids your warranty)? What clear purpose will an aftermarket NVIDIA Ion 2 addon have especially on netbooks that run Intel’s new Pineview processors, with integrated graphics and memory controllers?

I realize some people want to enjoy HD video playback on their netbooks with 10-inch screens, and play some of the latest games at the lowest quality settings possible, but you have to admit that this is all very pointless. HD video playback? Mobile gaming? You can do both of these without the extra expense and hassle, easily. And if you want to be stubborn, let me remind you that the bundled battery on any netbook available today will not last you more than a single movie or a couple of levels in Call of Duty 4. And then when the battery runs out, you won’t be able to use the netbook for any other purpose whatsoever. So, why would anyone want any of those on any netbook again?

It seems the folks at Intel and NVIDIA don’t get along well even if their machine do. Intel’s marketing director for netbooks Anil Nanduri touts that Broadcom’s new chip would be much more suited for netbooks, being cheaper and maybe even less power intensive. Most netbook buyers are looking for something that will last longer on the road as opposed to something with better graphics, a feature you won’t appreciate much with the small screen of these devices.

Intel’s design for the new Atom processors seems to exclude support for NVIDIA graphics but time will tell if this won’t be the case late on. But it’s clear that they want you to use your netbook as a secondary computer with another more powerful one handling your other more intensive tasks like watching HD video or gaming. A lot of folks have proven otherwise, though, and have pushed a bit on making Atom netbooks perform well in video playback and even games.
