Apparently, Intel still won’t budge and just won’t give PC makers such as Acer the CPU price subsidy necessary to launch sub-$1000 ultrabooks. And even though people like Acer Taiwan president Scott Lin appear confident about future sales of ultrabooks (compared with tablet PCs), it seems that the whole industry is a bit cautiously optimistic about the whole thing.

Knowing that PC makers are at least going to need something to help further adoption of ultrabooks once they actually become available, Intel plans on increasing its marketing subsidies to notebook vendors to attract them into promoting the new devices, according to a report on DigiTimes. Now, this might mean that Acer, Asus, and other ultrabook vendors will have to come up with some ridiculous promos to get people to buy their stuff, but let’s just give them the benefit of the doubt.

The good news is that sub-$1000 ultrabooks are still indeed on their way. Unfortunately, these might not make it to market until the 2nd quarter of 2012, in April, with the introduction of Intel’s Ivy Bridge platform. So if you aren’t in a hurry to purchase an ultrabook, you’re in for a great big discount provided that you can keep waiting it out for the next six months.

The S430 and S530 is packed with 8GB of DDR3 ram and up to 750 GB of hard drive space. Connectivity is not a problem with these models because they have WiFi, Bluetooth and USB ports. The glaring feature of this laptop is the sleek, metallic venner and crystalline finish of its body, available in blue and purple. No announced price yet for both models but they will be available in Africa, Asia and Middle East first before they become available in Europe and then finally the US.

Although they are quite busy preparing some new smartphones expected to launch later this year with Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 operating system, LG have announced plans to launch an Android-powered tablet PC by the fourth quarter of this year, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. The launch date of LG’s Android-powered tablet will come a full quarter behind of its rival Samsung’s own Android-powered tablet PC. LG hasn’t been kind with the type of details that the average consumer would want to know (i.e. specs, initial market and price) but it is expected that their device will come out on top of the Android-based tablet PC market when it finally launches near the end of the year.

LG Electronics has just announced a special edition of their X140 netbook that goes well with the upcoming 2010 World Cup. Featuring similar but different designs on the outside just opposite of the LCD screen, the LG X140 World Cup Netbook edition is a model that LG is hoping will make it big with football fans around the world. It might look different from the older, original model, but inside it runs the exact same specs: 10.1-inch screen, Windows 7 Starter, Intel Atom Pinetrail processors, up to 9-cell batteries, etc. It will be available in black, white and hot pink. LG made no mention of the price and official release date of this netbook worldwide, though.

In an age where bigger, faster, and just overall better netbooks are popping up all over the place, it’s not at all surprising to find a reviewer that’s not impressed with the performance and value of LG’s X130 netbook as it was tested while running Windows XP. Its 10-inch TFT LCD screen, 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive and 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor just aren’t enough to topple today’s latest netbooks which use Intel’s Pinetrail Atom processors and SSDs for storage. If you’re looking to buy an LG, you might have better luck with their newer netbook models. But being an old model, you could probably get the LG X130 at a fairly good price which would make it a good buy. Check out its full review via the link below.

The T280 is listed as having a 1.3 megapixel web camera, bluetooth, WiFi, optional 3G, 1-2GB of RAM, and 11.6 inch display and a 2.5 inch hard drive. Processor wise, it’ll be equipped with an Intel Pentium or Core Duo processor.

RAM will also be easy to upgrade but, the hard drive will be harder to get to to upgrade. Again, release info isn’t known or pricing. The FCC listing does however say, that the netbook will have different names for different regions, including TD280, TB280 and T28.

Most tablets feature a film on top of the screen, to enable touch functionality. LG’s model however, promises to offer more. Instead what makes the display touch, will be on the inside, rather than over the LCD screen, with in cell technology. This is said to make the brightness and picture quality better than other tablets, which use the film.

The touch screen will be multi touch and has gained the Windows 7 Touch Logo sticker. This will be the first tablet to feature such sticker, which LG is pleased with. Production will start from the second half of this year but, information on when it will hit retail stores is unknown. Engadget also have a video, showing off the touch functionality, which you can view here.

LG are to release another 10 inch netbook, this time in the form of the X140. Very similar to the X120, both feature a 10 inch display with a 1024 x 600 pixel resolution. Both also come equipped with the Intel Atom Pine Trail CPU. The X140 however, differs from the X120 in keyboard design. The X120 features a more traditional keyboard design, found on netbooks such as the Samsung NC10, while the X140, features an “island style” keyboard. The layout is similar to that found on the Sony Vaio W netbook.

Specs of the LG X140, include 1GB RAM, 160GB hard drive, a 6 cell battery, Windows 7 Starter and WiFi supporting 802.11b/g/n. The netbook will also be able to have 3G but, it’s not clear whether it will be included as standard or an optional upgrade. Pricing and release date is currently unknown.

Looks like 2010 is shaping up to be not just the year of the tablet, but also of e-book readers. KW Kim, CEO of LG Middle East and Africa, has just revealed in an interview that they are currently working on their own brand of e-book readers and that these may be launched as early as April of this year. Meanwhile, the company is also in talks with telecom operator etisalat for the possibility of launching a new line of notebooks using “Google’s operating system.” It is not mentioned whether this operating system will be Android or Chrome OS.

These LG notebooks, if released in cooperation with etisalat, will be subsidized just like the Acer and HP notebooks currently on offer from the operator. With LG having its sights also set on further developing its smartphones, offering pre-built desktops, and beating everyone else to launching 3D TVs, I don’t expect them to do a lot of innovating with their upcoming netbooks and e-readers. If anything, other netbook and e-reader makers will simply have more competition. And that’s a good thing.
