With Nokia’s defection and Intel’s relative silence regarding the subject, you might think that you’ve already seen the last of the MeeGo operating system. Well, perhaps, but Intel is keeping MeeGo alive in cooperation with Samsung in a new Linux-based open-source mobile OS initiative called the Tizen project. A post on the official Tizen web site says that it is a new platform intended for use in a number of different ways such as in smartphones, tablets, netbooks, smart TVs and even in-vehicle entertainment devices. Since it was announced only yesterday, Tizen is currently still picking up steam. So far, Intel and Samsung are onboard, and a report on DigiTimes says that it has already won support from the likes of SK Telecom, NTT DoCoMo, and Panasonic Mobile Communications.

At the same time, it is said that Asus and Acer are also coming on board, to add development to this new fledgeling OS. HTC is undecided. This new alliance of tech giants will have to go through a lot of hoops in order to surpass the success of current mainstream options like iOS and Android in the mobile space, but perhaps it will find better luck in other sectors of the consumer electronics market. For Asus, working on Tizen would probably be just like putting out a new netbook that runs MeeGo instead of Windows or Linux.

Canonical is about to release Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot in a few weeks from now. The beta is already released though so that you can have a preview on how the OS performs. Just yesterday, Ubuntu 11.10 beta 2 is released, it is not completely stable yet but it’s pretty good.

Synaptic Package Manager will not be included in this version of Ubuntu instead the Ubuntu Software center will be the default package manager. You can still install Synaptic Package Manager if you want too. The Ubuntu Software Manager has one amazing feature: synchronization. You can synchronize all the apps installed across multiple computers. This feature is based on the OneConf tool will track of the programs and apps you’ve installed on various computers. One you install an app in one device, your laptop will be able to grab it too.

The synchronization is only compatible with downloads from the Ubuntu Software Center itself. So if you manually install an app, you have to manually install it to other devices as well. The Ubuntu beta 2 includes updated kernel, latest LibreOffice, Firefox and Thunderbird versions and many more.

Some netbooks, already come with a built in power management application but, if you’ve installed Linux on top of the default Windows operating system, you will have been missing out on being able to easily switch from high performance mode, to power saving mode. This however, is where Jupiter comes in. The Jupiter power management applet runs in the system tray, where you can then easily switch between maximum performance or high performance, as well as power saving modes. From Jupiter, the screen resolution and orientation can also be easily changed. Adding more power saving features, Jupiter also allows you to quickly disable WiFi, bluetooth and webcam.

The Jupiter app should work on Ubuntu and any other Debian based Linux operating system. The app is based off of the EeePC ACPI utlities, which is found on Eee PC netbooks.

Moblin is generally made for netbooks with Intel Atom processors, so it’s not surprising to see that the OS on an Intel Atom Pine Trail CPU, is quite snappy. You can see the video of the OS on the U160 below.

At the MWC, Nokia have announced that they will be merging to create a Linux based operating system that will work on netbooks, tablets and mobile devices. Currently Intel provide the Moblin Linux interface found on netbooks, while Nokia have Maemo on mobile devices.

Not much is known about MeeGo at the moment but, we should start seeing it around the second quarter of 2010. We do however know, that devices running the MeeGo OS, will be able to access and run apps from both the Intel AppUp Center and the Nokia Ovi Store.

This would make it perfect for those ARM-based tablets and netbooks with little disk space to spare and are delegated to running Windows CE.

This version of Ubuntu has a cleaner icon format and is optimized for small screen and low-powered processors. It did come with a lot of apps built-in which although helpful was a bit cluttered and eats up precious disk space. The team behind the project removed Brasero (CD burner), Dictionary, Tomboy (note-taking), PalmOS Pilot, graphics applications and OpenOffice. Yes, they removed the popular open-source office suite and put Google Docs in its place.

While people had differing views on its removal, net access is becoming more ubiquitous and a few lighter spec’d devices would do well just to leave some apps to work in the cloud. This would free up space in the device for personal media like pictures, video and music.

If you’ve been around the operating system block a few times, you’ll notice the above picture would be very familiar. It’s from Leeenux, a netbook Linux distribution based on the Ubuntu Netbook Remix. Jolicloud also sported the same format prior to the redesign of its user interface.

The operating system will only take up 1.2GB of disk space but will be packed with all the stuff you need in your netbook including office apps, media players and games. What’s more is that it’s friendly with smaller form factor devices like the 7″ Eee PC.

The new update brings up the version to 2.0 and bundles in the new Firefox 3.7 beta, Thunderbird and SNES and Sega Genesis emulators. If you want to try it out, go to the Leeenux home page below.

One of these is the PC810T with the following specs:

512MB RAM

Linux OS / Windows CE

2GB flash drive

802.11b/g WiFi

2 x USB ports

VGA and HDMI out

SIM slot for WCDMA support

The support for WCDMA is really nice even with the very spartan set of specs it has.

There’s also the PC-701 that shares its model number with the original Eee PC. I’ve seen one of these at a local electronic market but didn’t get to test it. It looked pretty slim and small to me though, something good as a mini-planner, given the specs.

Linux OS / Windows CE

16GB NAND flash

802.11b/g

You can see more of their devices at their site including a few netbooks. While the processors are a bit different from the other netbooks, the designs are very familiar. If you’re interested, you’ll have to contact the company since they might not be currently selling to US customers yet.

While we’re all awash with news about Intel’s new processors, let’s not forget that the previous model netbooks are still available and are still alive and kicking. In particular, those netbooks like the MSI WInd U110 that run have GMA 500 graphics will still do an excellent job for playing HD video. For those that have Windows machines, there’s no problem in taking advantage of this.

But for our more daring Linux brethren, they have been left in the cold in this respect, until now. Linux Tipps has the low-down on how to use a Video Acceleration API to get your penguin OS up to speed to enjoy HD. This tip was done in Ubuntu Linux but I’m sure it can be pulled off on other variants of the OS.

Hit the link below to get more info, though be warned that this does need a bit of know how to pull off.
