Following on from the rumors that Dell and HP will be pulling out of the netbook game, Dell have come forward and have said that the story is not true but, was part of an April Fools joke by “sources”. Consumers do still prefer netbooks over tablets and Dell see the Inspirion Mini 10, as an “important member of our mobile platform portfolio and is a great secondary companion device as people appreciate the compact size and the ability to stay connected on the go”.

The Mini 10 still has a lot of life left in it and you can be sure it isn’t going anywhere soon. T-Mobile will be offering the netbook up with a data plan, while Clear will offer the netbook with WiMax support later in the year.

Dell have already launched their Mini 10 with WiMax, however that was the older model, with an Intel Atom N270 CPU. The updated Inspiron Mini 10, with the PineTrail CPU will also be updated to include WiMAX. Clear will be providing the 4G service for the netbook. The WiMAX enabled version is due to start shipping from April 1st. It also appears that, the netbook may not be available direct from Dell, as Clearwire have said it will only be available “through select Clear retail locations, telesales and Clear.com.”

The WiMAX enabled Mini 10 will set you back $250 after rebate. There’s no information on how much per month the tariff will be but, it’s likely to be $40 based on other netbooks.

LaptopMag has an extensive review of the new Dell Mini 10 Pine Trail netbook. Some of the major take aways I got from the review

Pros:

Extra long battery life at 9 hours. Excellent for use during flights or trips. Or just to browse wirelessly in bed or on the patio.

Color options which let you personalize your netbook is a sea of drab silver and black units. You can also have a designer lid for a more unique device, though it will set you back $85.

Nice patterned palmrest for typing. The terraced, chiclet keys are also a nice touch.

Lots of upgrade options including 3G mobile broadband, integrated TV tuner, HD video accelerator and a GPS module.

Cons:

It’s a bit on the bulky side at 1.36kg and looks a bit bigger with the battery sticking out of the back.

The unit gets a bit warm after 15 minutes of Hulu, and even goes to 42 Celsius on idle. Not good if you’re using this on your lap.

Integrated touchpad buttons. This might be a challenge to other users since tapping the button sometimes registers as cursor movement. It also no longer supports multitouch gestures, probably because there are no discrete buttons.

Overall, I agree with Michael’s review. It looks solid and offers some very good options but the touchpad and heat issue might be a problem for some users. If you want something cheap, nice-looking netbook, grab this netbook. Price starts at $299.

In this month’s catalogue from Dell there’s several great saving offers on from the Mini 10 to the Inspiron 17. An interesting find on the very last page reveals an even cheaper Mini 10 model for $299. The new model denoted with a v, the Dell Inspiron Mini 10v will be released mid May for $100 less than the current Mini 10 model. Not much is cut back for the $100 either. The hard drive is reduced in size from 160GB to 120GB which is still adequate. The processor used has also been changed. The 10v will use the more traditional CPU of the Intel Atom N270 instead of the Z series Atom processor.

Since it first went up for pre-order, I’m sure some of you would like to know how exactly the Dell Inspiron Mini 10 functions in real life. Good thing Laptop has already finished reviewing their Dell Mini 10, and has shared their thoughts about the said netbook in a full-sized review. Overall, they’ve deemed the netbook good, especially when it comes to text input with the slightly larger keyboard it’s got than most other netbooks. The built-in HDMI port pretty much becomes an accessory because its use of an Atom Z530 processor couple with Intel’s GMA 500 graphics aren’t enough to handle 720p video playback properly. Otherwise, it’s a netbook worth taking a look at, if the odd trackpad doesn’t throw you off in the first place.

Dell has published photos with instructions on how to disassemble and upgrade or replace components of the Inspiron Mini 10. In these photos, it is revealed that replacing the hard drive and wireless card is quite difficult, as it requires removing the keyboard. And by removing the trackpad assemby, one can gain access to the spot for the optional TV tuner, Atom CPU and RAM. Unfortunately, the RAM is soldered to you won’t be able to upgrade it to a higher capacity. In any case, these photos will surely help out anyone looking to peek inside the Dell Mini 10′s innards. More photos at the link below.

Dell recently held a press conference in France in which it officially launched a 3G version of the Dell Mini 10. The photo you see above was taken by the guys from over at Netbook3G, and other photos comparing it to the Asus Eee PC 901 Go are also available on their site. The absence of a button on that trackpad is very evident, though it doesn’t look like it’s going to be much of a problem. If you a refresher as to the Dell Mini 10′s specs:

Atom Z530 CPU

1GB RAM

Multi-touch Trackpad

160GB HDD (No SSD models currently)

10” 1024×576 Display (HD screen will also be available 1366 x 768 I think)

Wi-Fi N, Webcam, 3G Broadband, GPS, TV Tuner

Windows XP Home

3-Cell or 6-Cell Battery
