Intel’s Cedar Trail platform may not have the APUs like that of AMD E-series , but this hasn’t stopped HP from using it in order to refresh their Mini 110 and Mini 210 netbook computers. Intel’s Cedar Tail platform is made up of the Cedarview processors and the NM10 chipset, with the latter alsobeing used by for the Pine Trail netbook and nettop platform.

The CPU on Cedar Trail are built using the 32nm fabrication process and features a unified architecture that packs the processing cores, memory controller (apparently connected to the CPU via an FSB bus) as well as the GPU on the same die. The latter is actually based on a PowerVR design and features hardware decoding capabilities for a wide number of HD formats, such as MPEG2, VC1, AVC, H.264 and Blu-ray 2.0.

In the Mini 110 and 210, customers can choose between the 1.6GHz Atom N2600 and 1.86GHz N2800 processors which can be supported by either 1GB or 2GB of RAM. Netbooks can pack hard drives reaching up to 500GB, while the rest of the specs list includes 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth and 100Mbps LAN connectivity, VGA webcam, a built-in media card reader and a 6-cell battery.

The keyboard is spill-resistant and comes with a 10.1-inch LED backlit screen that uses a 1024×600 resolution in the Mini 110 and 1368×768 in the 210.

The two systems will start at 279 and 309 EUR, which translates into about $367 to $407 US.

With all the releases HP has done during the CES, I guess they just had to make do with what they had to make their own smartbook mockup. The company demonstrated a mockup of a smartbook made from the same chassis as an HP Mini 110 with a few tweaks.

The prototype has a Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU and Google Android OS. It features a touchscreen as well some unique home and back buttons beside the trackpad. The trackpad itself is tweaked since Android doesn’t use cursors for its interface.

While HP doesn’t have plans to enter the smartbook market yet, the prototype does show that they are actively researching on opportunities and we hope it’s going to be thinner and smaller than what they showed off.
