Avid Android tablet users will no doubt prefer using one of the staples of a good Web browsing experience when they are trying to enjoy the Internet on the go. That is, more people are probably relying on today’s most popular Web browser, Firefox, to spruce up their Web surfing experience no matter what time of day. Fortunately, Mozilla knows this all too well, and currently Firefox for tablets is being showered with UI enhancements of all sorts to make it much better than it already is.
Soon, Google’s Chrome OS won’t be the only web-based OS in town. If things go according to plan, Mozilla is set to launch its own web-based OS for handheld and other mobile devices with the help of HTML5. Mozilla plans on doing this through a project called “Boot to Gecko” (B2G) which they announced today through the Google groups forums. Mozilla aims to roll out a new standalone operating system for the open Web because it believes that “the web can displace proprietary, single-vendor stacks for application development.”
TechCrunch’s “dead simple and dirt cheap touch screen web tablet to surf the web,” called the CrunchPad, has been given the go signal by Mark Finkle to use Fennec, Mozilla’s open-source mobile web browser. Firefox was actually Michael Arrington’s first choice for a browser for CrunchPad, but Mark Finkle suggests that Fennec might be more suitable.

Fennec is designed to work well on mobile-class processors with tighter memory requirements. Fennec is also designed for touchscreens and supports the same add-ons mechanism as Firefox. Since Fennec is built on XULRunner, other XUL-based apps (Songbird, Chatzilla) get a free runtime.

So if you’re one of the few people who have access to a CrunchPad prototype, just go ahead and try it out to see how well it works.
