It would be bold to think that netbooks would survive? Of course, the growing trend and plummeting prices of tablet PCs and then the launch of Intel’s Ultrabook bandwagon, nothing more would have discontinued the netbook form factor. Well, not so fast, Cedar Trail has suddenly renewed attention on the fading teeny-sized notebooks, for another extra generation at least. One of the dynamic forces in the netbook class, MSI – just released its new Wind U180 for 2012.

Thoroughly built by MSI for 2012, “The Wind U180, brings a novel zenith in PC technology, providing both performance and sensational pleasing appearances,” MSI alleges. “It sports a minimalist dark, creamish white or violet, and in less that an inch thin, it tips the scales at about 1kg, and is covered in MSI’s own striking IMR color film stamp to avert scratches and stains.”

Intel’s Cedar Trail platform doesn’t only pleases the eye, but it steals the show as well. The Wind U180 sports either an Intel Atom N2600 (1.6GHz) or N2800 (1.86GHz)  CPU nestled into Intel’s NM10 chipset running GMA 3650 graphics inbuilt, memory of up to 2GB of DDR3-800/1066MHz, SATA hard drive 250GB/320GB 2.5-inch, (2-in-1)memory card reader, a duo of an HDMI port, USB 2.0 ports, Bluetooth 3.0+HS, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, 0.3MP webcam, HD audio, 6-cell battery, and of course, Windows 7 Starter operating system.

We’ve seen netbooks “blinged” up before and now it’s MSI’s turn to glitz up one of their netbooks. Internally the MSI Wind N135DX isn’t much different from other Wind U135 netbook offerings from the company. You get an Intel Atom N455 1.66GHz processor, 1GB of RAM and a 10 inch screen with a standard netbook resolution of 1024×600. Other specs are currently unknown but, will most likely come with Windows 7 Starter and a 160-250GB hard drive.

The outside of the Wind U135DX however is different to previous MSI Wind netbooks we’ve seen before. The lid of the netbook comes covered in, as the name of the netbook suggests, Swarovski crystals. Pricing currently isn’t known but, we do know that the netbook will become available within Europe shortly.

Earlier this year, MSI released the MSI Wind U160. At the time, it launched with the Intel Atom N450 processor, as did many other netbooks released around the same time. The company are now updating the netbook and it will include the dual core Intel Atom N550 processor.

The design will remain the same and it appears other specs are also the same. The only difference is the new processor. Netbook News have got a hands on with the latest MSI Wind U160 model and you can view the video after the jump. The release date hasn’t yet been announced yet though and neither has pricing. (...)

MSI have teamed up with MLB Team, the LA Dodgers to bring fans an exclusive and limited edition MSI Wind netbook. Or for those who need something bigger than a netbook, one of the MSI Wind Tops has been transformed to feature LA Dodgers branding.

The MSI Wind U135DX netbook has been revamped to include the Dodgers emblem on the lid of the machine, while under the keyboard the “LA” placing. Digital Dodgers content can also be found on the netbook. Specs include a 10 inch display, 250GB hard drive, 1GB of DDR3 RAM as well as Intel GMA 3150 graphics, Intel Atom N455 CPU and built in wifi. Unfortunately pricing hasn’t been released yet, or information on when you can expect to be able to grab the LA Dodgers MSI Wind netbook.

The MSI Wind Top AE2220 on the other hand, features a 21.5 inch screen, with 4GB of RAM, Intel Core 2 Dup T6600 CPU, 640GB hard drive as well as a DVD drive. Again pricing and release info is currently unknown.

At Computex 2010, MSI have introduced two new concept netbook designs. Unfortunately not much information is known about the two netbooks but, we do have some information regarding the netbooks.

First up is the MSI Serene. The Serene uses MSI’s thermal technology, meaning the netbook will be fanless, making it almost silent while in use. The thermal technology uses heat dissipation, which the company wants to integrate into future products.

The MSI La Mode is also designed with heat dissipation in mind. Other than that, it’s pretty much like the MSI Wind U160 but, tweaked slightly on the exterior design. The case will be ebony cloth with wave pattern as well as a luminescent MSI logo.

Intel are getting ready to release two new chipsets, the N455 and the N475 which will bring compatibility for DDR3 RAM. Apart from that, they will pretty much be the same as the N450 and N470.

Over at a pre-computex press event, NewGadgets.de were able to check out a new netbook by MSI, the MSI Wind U160DX. MSI plan to launch the U160DX as one of the first netbooks with the new chips in, with support for DDR3 of course. Looks wise, it’s very much like the U160 and will also come with the N455 CPU. It’s not clear whether MSI intend to ship the netbook with DDR3 though. Release and pricing info is currently unknown.

While we’ve already seen the insides of the recently released U160, we haven’t seen the full unboxing photos of the netbook, which thanks to The Link, we now have. ElectricPig have also provided info on the UK selling price and release date. Those in the UK can expect to see the MSI Wind U160 next month for £329.

The company note, that while it is an updated version to other Wind models, such as the U100, by adding the Intel Atom N450 processor, the looks have also been updated and are very reminiscent of the Sony VAIO SR line. The only thing which spoils the look for some, will be the battery but, the added battery life it can provide will be worth it, if you use your netbook away from a mains socket. Sure this tablet mod isn’t the first one with seen, with a rebadged MSI Wind U100 most recently turned into a slider, like the VAIO UX. This time around, one modder has hacked his U100 to resemble the upcoming iPad from Apple. The keyboard was removed from the netbook, a touchscreen added and what really makes it look like more of an iPad than the regular tablet mods, is that alexbates, founder of InsanelyWind added OS X to it with customisations. He also cites that, not only does it look like an iPad but, the specs of it, far exceed that of the iPad with it having “10 times the storage, twice the speed, external video (VGA), webcam, USB ports, and built-in multi card reader.”

MSI is not known for its flashy gadgets but it is popular with a lot of netbook buyers on a budget. I’m not sure why they wanted to keep this under wraps, probably they forgot about officially announcing it, but the new MSI Wind U140 is now available and it looks and feels like the old U100 series.

That’s because it uses the same chassis, not surprisingly, as it has done this for the U123 as well. While hands-ons and unboxings mostly focus on the outside, it’s the inside that counts for this netbook. The new model packs a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 with GMA 3150 and a lower rated 4400mAh battery. Methinks they downgraded it to keep the price low since it will likely offer the same battery life due to the power-sipping processor now included.

No word on anything else, really. We’ll have to wait for it to show up in a few retailers for more details seeing that MSI kept mum with any specs for this device.
