The NEC Cloud Communicator dual-screen Android tablet already went on sale in Japan but it’s not yet available anywhere else, though it was first seen on the 2011 CES event.

NEC is said to have worked with software partners to develop apps to take advantage of the dual screen layout. For instance, you can view a PowerPoint presentation in one window while taking notes in a second window — something which could come in handy in a business or education setting.

NEC also plans to launch an updated model of the dual screen tablet this summer. The newer version will be thinner, lighter, and it will feature a TI OMAP4 dual core processor and Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Netbook developer NEC have released two new netbooks into the Japanese market including a high specification netbook that uses the dual core Intel Atom N550 CPU and a slightly less power packed netbook that uses a single core CPU.

The NEC LaVie Light BL550, as it is known, packs quite a punch with it’s top drawer specification list which includes the 1.5GHz Atom N550 dual core processor, a 10.1-inch display (1366×768), a 320gb hard drive, 2GB of RAM and the Windows 7 Home Premium operating system. The BL550 also packs quite a punch when you get to the checkout to pay for it. Coming in at 85,000 Yen ($993 according to xe.com), this is one of the most expensive netbooks on the market currently.

If your budget doesn’t quite reach to the price of the BL550 then fortunately, NEC are also releasing the LaVie Light BL350 which uses a single core processor. Using the 1.83GHz Intel Atom N475 CPU the BL350 also has a 10.1″ display, a 250GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM and runs the Windows 7 Starter Edition operating system. This model costs 70,000 Yen ($818 via xe.com).

The new NEC Lavie Light Netbook’s new colors are Pink and Blue in addition to the previous Black and White color design.

Aside from the two new colors and the 10-inch display screen, the Lavie Light Netbook is still pretty much the same old stuff with the following features:

NEC is set to release a new netbook called the Versa N1100 which is said to be a magnesium alloy-based mini notebook or netbook that has been tested to survive up to 150kg weight forced onto it. The company claimed that it has tested the resiliency of the Versa N1100 by putting a 150kg weight on top of it (with the bezel closed, I supposed) for 5 seconds. After five seconds, there were no single cracks seen on the netbook and it is still running perfectly.

Such was their basis for advertising the NEC Versa N1100 as a tough netbook wonder. And to further test its other claim that the Versa N1100 is able to withstand heavy sweat that could cost its keyboard characters and the black gloss finish to tarnish, NEC found out by using an artifical sweat that no paint came off the netbook.

In addition, NEC has also dropped the netbook on wooden floors, iron plates and concrete floors among other durability tests and successfully passed each one of the tests.

Now here’s the catch, NEC officials have also warned users “not to try their tests at home” as they don’t give additional warranty that would cover impact damage or physical abuse to the netbook. Ironically conflicting, right?

Other specs of the NEC Versa N1100 include:

8.9-inch WSVGA display

Intel Atom processor N270

160GB HDD

1GB RAM

Wi-Fi

1.3 megapixel webcam

Windows XP

3-cell battery

Pricing and release date details are not yet announced for the NEC Versa N1100.

Japanese manufacturer maybe starting to notice the growing popularity of netbooks, that some of them are starting to join the netbook party. One of them is NEC which just announced their own netbook – the LaVie Light. Sadly, this netbook got nothing unusual to brag about except for the fact that it has the NEC branding.

Let’s see how it fares up with other netbooks in terms of specs then:

8.9-inch LCD screen

1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU

160GB HDD

1GB Memory

WiFi

3 USB Ports

SD Card Slot

1.3 Megapixel web camera

1.17 kg.

Perhaps by now, you’d know that those are pretty standard netbook specs, right? Pricing for this netbook would probably in the range of current 8.9-inch netbooks available in the market today. Anybody here who can understand Japanese, please visit the site and would appreciate if you can tell us the price of the LaVie Light netbook.
