The NorhTec Gecko Edubook comes pre-loaded with WattOS, a distribution of Linux configured to optimize the hardware of the netbook. Other Linux based operating systems are also configurable on the netbook, including Puppy Linux among others. NorhTec’s Michael Barnes has tested the OS on the netbook. He used Puppy Linux 4.12 and ran it from a USB thumb drive.

Michael has posted a video, showing the OS in action on the netbook. He notes that while it can play audio and video streamed from the internet, video playback is a bit choppy. You can view the video after the jump.

NorhTec, who brought us the Pad Tablet and the Gecko EduBook, have now come out with the Gecko Surfboard, a computer in a keyboard. You have heard of these before; perhaps the Amstrad computers or the Commodore 64, and lately, the Asus Eee Keyboard.

However, what makes this different from say, the Eee Keyboard, is its price. It only costs $99.

It’s core runs on the super efficient Xcore86 1Ghz processor which only needs 5 watts of power to operate. Sure, you may not be able to run the latest action games on it, but it will be more than enough for web browsing. It also comes with 512MB of system memory, a VGA and composite ports for hooking up to a TV or spare computer monitor, 10/100 network, 802.11b/g for wireless, standard microphone and headphone ports and 2x USB ports.

It can run on Linux or Windows XP and can boot from a 2.5 inch IDE hard drive or a SD/SDHC drive. Watch out for it at CES 2010 and for it to be shipped early January 2010.

If you still remember the Asus Eee PC rival we featured before that goes by the name Norhtec Gecko, well the new Airis Kira 100 which is released in Europe definitely looks almost the same but in different colors. Just like the Asus Eee PC, the Airis Kira 100 is a low-cost ultraportable notebook with an SRP of only around $472.

The Airis Kira 100 has a 7-inch 800×480 pixel display, 1GHz VIA C7 processor, 512 RAM, 2GB internal HD, VGA output, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, 56 kbps modem, SD/MMC/MS/CF card reader, webcam, 4 hour battery life (wow!), Linux lite OS and weighs only 1kg.
