The OLPC should be no stranger to netbook veterans since it’s one of the devices that spurred the entire market we have today. While everyone is giving away this netbook to deserving school children all over the world, a tiny upgraded version slipped into the FCC recently.

The OLPC XO 1.5 will be replacing the AMD Geode processor with a more powerful VIA C7-M. It also sports 1GB RAM, 4GB flash storage, 802.11 b/g WiFi. It’s expected to sell for US$100, though we’re not sure if that’s retail or if you need to donate one to get one.

The Sugar OS, the operating system commonly found on machines from the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) project, is now available as a free download to try out for anyone who may be interested, but may not need or want to get the OLPC XO laptop.

The “Sugar on a Stick”, as it is called, is up to version 2.0 and can be downloaded as a binary image from the Sugar Labs wiki page. Version 2.0, also known as Blueberry (the previous version was called Strawberry), is based on Fedora 12 and includes full optimisation for USB flash thumb drives.

Software bundled with the Sugar On A Stick includes Open Office 4 Kids, a streamlined version of OpenOffice.org, improved wireless networking support and updated version of the various software packages that were found in the previous releases.

Installation will require a 1GB USB stick,  the 589MB image and the Fedora LiveUSB Creator software. So if you ever wanted to try out the Sugar OS without needing to get the XO laptop, here is your chance. Should work well on your Eee PC too.

Having given up on its fantasies of creating a $10 laptop back in February, India has finally placed orders for a total of 250,000 units of OLPC laptops for its school children. OLPC India’s CEO Satish Jha comments that up to 3 million OLPC laptops are expected to be shipped to India before the end of the year, but for now the only sure figure is 250K. Whether the OLPC laptops that will be delivered to India are running on AMD chips or VIA C7-M processors wasn’t specified, however, it’s sure to be light years ahead of any $10 laptop they could have put together.
