The “reimagined” version of Windows that Microsoft is currently working on holds a lot more secrets than that new Metro-style Xbox Live app. Along with many other UI and feature changes, Windows 8 will have a brand new Blue Screen of Death or BSoD for every time that it runs into an error or crashes for some reason (and how often does that kind of thing happen, right?).

Pictured above, Windows 8′s new BSoD is still blue, however it won’t be showing you a great big white wall of text this time around. Instead, it will simply say “Your PC ran into a problem that it couldn’t handle, and now it needs to restart.” On top of that, there will be a rather huge sad face right above the couple lines of text.

So now, the BSoD is even less helpful than before in letting you know exactly what went wrong, but at least it knows how you feel. And isn’t that what’s important?

Good news for early adopters of the MeeGo software platform. If you’re already running the MeeGo OS on your netbook and would like to see some improvement or are still looking into it, MeeGo version 1.01 has just been released and from the reports about its performance so far, it seems like worth the update. Reportedly, this first update to the MeeGo OS for netbooks brings over 100 bug fixes, performance improvements across the board, added visual improvements, and an “Enhanced netbook window manager”. And while there are good things about the update, there are also a few niggles. Read on to find out more about them.
Over on the official Jolicloud blog, a short list of supported touchscreen technologies have been put up (though I’m sure most of the names there will be unfamiliar with normal folks like you and me). To see the touchscreen display support in action, watch the above video of a touchscreen-enabled Samsung NB30 netbook. Check out the link below for more info.

If you’re one of the many people who have been looking forward to the release of Google’s open-source Chrome operating system since the day it was first announced, then you’ll be glad to know that Google’s VP of product management Sundar Pichai spoke at Computex 2010 in Taipei and said Chrome OS is on track to be released by the fall of 2010. It will debut in a notebook, and while it wasn’t specified what brand and model it would be, there’s hope that it might be an upcoming netbook from Acer, as earlier rumors have suggested. He didn’t mention any other details about the open-source OS, other than trying to explain how Google sees it differently from Android, as it is intended for use in the desktop PC environment while Android is for handheld devices.

Over at LifeHacker, the guys asked their readers to share what their favourite netbook operating system was. From the comments, they created a poll with the five most popular operating systems. While Windows XP was mentioned by some and is found on most netbooks, it wasn’t one of the top fives. Instead, it came down to Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Jolicloud (all of which are free), OS X and Windows 7.

From 13001 votes, Windows 7 rose above the others by almost 10%, with it being the favourite for 36% of the respondents. Next up was Ubuntu with 27%. Both Jolicloud and OS X received 12% but, OS X had 58 votes more. Linux Mint fell under 10%, with a total of 8% choosing it. Users were also able to choose other but, only 5% did. I personally would agree with the results. I’ve tried XP, Ubuntu and Windows 7 on several netbooks and have stayed with Windows 7 on each of them. What about you guys? What would you have picked, is Windows 7 your operating system of choice?

ComputerWorld have posted an interesting article up about which is better for a netbook, Windows 7 or Linux? Preston has spent time using both operating systems on his netbook and has explained what it’s like using each system, and how it will benefit netbooks.

In the article, he notes Linux as being a “solid, stable, operating system with a simple, easy-to-use interface”. Linux also will work with lighter weight hardware than is needed for Windows 7, which will bring the cost of the netbook down. The Linux operating system is also much cheaper than Windows 7, and even free in some cases. Both these factors indicate that a Linux netbook should be cheaper than a Windows 7 based one.

Windows 7 on the other hand, while it may drive the price of the netbook up a little, Windows is familar with many people. New features of Windows 7 may need a bit of learning about, switching to Linux would involve learning how to operate and use a different operating system. Installing and updating software in Linux is described as not for the faint hearted.

So it seems that Windows 7, will prove to be a more popular choice amoung consumers. Linux won’t however disappear from netbooks and we should still see it on “budget” netbooks.
