Apple has distanced themselves more than once from the netbook market in the past, even claiming their “DNA will not let them ship” [a netbook]. However, it looks like Apple has finally changed its mind regarding the netbook market after all, if a new report from DigiTimes about an upcoming MacBook Air is to be believed. After all these years in the market and only ever receiving a small upgrade in its internals, the Apple MacBook Air is rightly fit for a design change. What kind of change that might be remains uncertain, but a senior analyst at DigiTimes Research an 11.6-inch MacBook Air is on the way, and it will have an Intel Core i-series ULV processor. It is also said that this new model will feature “an even slimmer and lighter design than the previous-generation models.” This sounds very interesting, and apart from heat concerns, might come out as another marvel in engineering. But as confirmation from Apple is still unavailable, I suggest take this report with a grain of salt.

Sure this tablet mod isn’t the first one with seen, with a rebadged MSI Wind U100 most recently turned into a slider, like the VAIO UX. This time around, one modder has hacked his U100 to resemble the upcoming iPad from Apple. The keyboard was removed from the netbook, a touchscreen added and what really makes it look like more of an iPad than the regular tablet mods, is that alexbates, founder of InsanelyWind added OS X to it with customisations. He also cites that, not only does it look like an iPad but, the specs of it, far exceed that of the iPad with it having “10 times the storage, twice the speed, external video (VGA), webcam, USB ports, and built-in multi card reader.”

Over at LifeHacker, the guys asked their readers to share what their favourite netbook operating system was. From the comments, they created a poll with the five most popular operating systems. While Windows XP was mentioned by some and is found on most netbooks, it wasn’t one of the top fives. Instead, it came down to Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Jolicloud (all of which are free), OS X and Windows 7.

From 13001 votes, Windows 7 rose above the others by almost 10%, with it being the favourite for 36% of the respondents. Next up was Ubuntu with 27%. Both Jolicloud and OS X received 12% but, OS X had 58 votes more. Linux Mint fell under 10%, with a total of 8% choosing it. Users were also able to choose other but, only 5% did. I personally would agree with the results. I’ve tried XP, Ubuntu and Windows 7 on several netbooks and have stayed with Windows 7 on each of them. What about you guys? What would you have picked, is Windows 7 your operating system of choice?

While Apple may be doing their best to stop hackers from installing OS X on their Intel Atom powered netbooks and companies, such as Pystar from selling netbooks with OS X preloaded, it hasn’t stopped the hackers from adding OS X to their netbooks. The latest update from Apple saw the hacking community fight back with a patch, which is probably how someone installed OS X on their machine. There are many Macbook Air clones around and one guy purchased one in the Philippines for around $400. Once he got it home, he turned it into a more real Macbook. He installed OS X Snow Leopard on the device. The WiFi card wouldn’t work, so it was replaced with a compatible model. Also the touch pad doesn’t work quite as it should on a real Macbook. You can view the OS in action on the Macbook Air clone below.

Currently the WiFi, ethernet and 3G aren’t working, so going online isn’t feasible. Also the GPS currently isn’t working under OS X. Neither can 3D games or apps be run due to missing video chip drivers, which weren’t good on Vista either.

If you are one of those adventurous Eee PC owners that have had the desire to install OS X on your netbook and turn it into a “Hackintosh” then you may be pleased to know that thanks to some persistant hackers and a new application, your sound issues – it has been virtually impossible to get sound working when using OS X on an Eee PC until now – can all be solved.

You need to install a different audio driver and the Apple developer tools first of all and then grab the new application that developer ipis OS X have created. Audieee allows the sound to be controlled from the menu bar on OS X, allowing you to switch between headphones/speakers as your output of choice, something that doesnt happen automatically yet but, be sure there is a hacker somewhere working on a fix for this too.

With more and more tech geeks experimenting on loading netbooks with Apple’s OS X and have successfully done so, Apple should take the cue and come up with their own Apple Netbook. Unfortunately, the company seems to be not to keen on doing so but instead introduced a sub-$1000 MacBook recently.

Hence, OS X-loving tech geeks who wants the said OS on their netbooks are left with no recourse but to install the OS themselves. A couple of days ago, it was Dell’s Mini Inspiron 9 which get the OS X treatment. Now, here comes another one – the Lenovo S10 getting its own sweet OS X treatment.

Lenovo S10 owners who wants the OS X installed on their netbook should read this step-by-step instruction provided by Flung of Netbook Tech. Mind you, it doesn’t seem as easy as the one done with the Dell Mini Inspiron 9.

If you want to convince yourself, watch this video first of the Lenovo S10 running on OS X.

Steven Sande from The Unofficial Apple Weblog has posted up the steps he took to install OS X on a Dell Mini Inspiron and it’s an interesting, comprehensive guide for anyone with a desire to use the Apple operating system on their Dell netbook which however, as the guide states, clearly violates the licensing agreement stating you must use OS X on Apple products only.

OS X doesn’t run perfectly on the Mini Inspiron, there are a number of driver issues, ethernet doesn’t work and sleep mode doesn’t work either but, if you can cope with those problems, this guide will help you through the whole process of installing the OS.
