Panasonic is gearing itself up for new applications with a breakthrough technology called WiGig.

WiGig is a new innovation in data transmission that allows devices to transfer data at super fast multi-gigabit speeds. The company has hinted at this new technology as early as 2009. However, its adoption on actual devices has only been done recently. One example of its use is in transmitting data from tablets to car entertainment systems.

Through WiGig, users can watch full DVD videos from their tablets to their car entertainment systems in only one minute using a 60Hz frequency band. Using this technology, transfer rates can reach up to 7 Gbps. It is currently being compared to the Thunderbolt wired ports. Thunderbolt offers 10Gbps transfer rates, however, it is bi-directional, making it slower than WiGig.

WiGig does have some limitations, however, which means that despite its impressive speed, it will not be a better substitute for the more popular Wi-Fi. It only accommodates data transferring in a range of around 1 to 3 meters.

Thus, to date, its use by Panasonic will be mostly for entertainment purposes, such as the tablet-to car DVD viewing. Still, the fact that such speeds are now possible could pave the way for even better data transfer solutions without the short range limitation.

WiGig will be available around June 2013.

These new models will sport 12.1-inch displays with a resolution of 1280 x 800 and a 16:10 aspect ratio. Users may, however, opt to use a 16:9 aspect ratio coupled with a resolution of 1600 × 900. This option is useful for those who often make video calls and video conferences via these handy devices. To further enhance the experience, there is also a 720p web cam integrated with the notebooks.

More customization options are also available for users. For instance, there is a choice between a regular Hard Disk Drive or a pricier Solid State Disk which boots up at a speedy 9 seconds, thanks to the special and exclusive add-on called the Panasonic’s Quick Boot Manager.

These laptops also sport an Intel Core i5 2450M processor, with a clock speed of 2.5 GHz and Smart Cache of 3 MB. It also carries a slot for USB 3.0 for plugging peripherals into the device. An HDMI port is likewise available for connecting larger displays like an LCD TV. Users also have several connectivity options such as Wi-Fi, WiMAX, as well as Bluetooth 2.1 plus EDR.

There is currently no official release date and no SRP yet for the Let’s Note SX and NX series.

Panasonic Japan has announced two Android tablets for the domestic market: the BizPad JT-580VT (with a 7-inch LCD screen) and the JT-581VT (with a 10.1-inch LCD). The name of the product/model is from its specific target market, which is the businesses. Both devices run on Android 3.2.

What the tablets have in common is that they are shock-, dust-, and water-proof. For instance, Panasonic says the big model can absorb drops from a height of 80cm, while the smaller one can even handle 120cm.

Both devices also have an NFC reader, a replaceable battery, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a USB port, GPS, a microSD slot, a ARM Cortex-A9 dual-core CPU, 1GB memory, 16GB flash, and infrared.

The 7-inch model (pictured above) features a 1,024×600 resolution screen, 3G as an option, a 5MP camera, and IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi. It weighs 400g and will go on sale in December.

The 10-inch BizPad (pictured above) comes with a 1,280×800 resolution screen, a 1.3MP camera, and IEEE 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. This model weighs 700g and will go on sale in Japan in January 2012.

They may not look “fashionable” like other tablets in the market currently but these business-oriented products are generally built better and more durable. This would definitely come handy for those who need to do some admin work in the field.

Panasonic has yet to announce prices and possible plans to sell the BizPads outside Japan.

With Nokia’s defection and Intel’s relative silence regarding the subject, you might think that you’ve already seen the last of the MeeGo operating system. Well, perhaps, but Intel is keeping MeeGo alive in cooperation with Samsung in a new Linux-based open-source mobile OS initiative called the Tizen project. A post on the official Tizen web site says that it is a new platform intended for use in a number of different ways such as in smartphones, tablets, netbooks, smart TVs and even in-vehicle entertainment devices. Since it was announced only yesterday, Tizen is currently still picking up steam. So far, Intel and Samsung are onboard, and a report on DigiTimes says that it has already won support from the likes of SK Telecom, NTT DoCoMo, and Panasonic Mobile Communications.

At the same time, it is said that Asus and Acer are also coming on board, to add development to this new fledgeling OS. HTC is undecided. This new alliance of tech giants will have to go through a lot of hoops in order to surpass the success of current mainstream options like iOS and Android in the mobile space, but perhaps it will find better luck in other sectors of the consumer electronics market. For Asus, working on Tizen would probably be just like putting out a new netbook that runs MeeGo instead of Windows or Linux.

While the Panasonic Toughbook isn’t all that portable like a netbook should be, it is considered a netbook based on it’s screen size. Compared to the average netbook, it’s almost 2cm bigger in height and more than 3cm bigger in depth and around 1KG heavier. The Panasonic Toughbook 19 measures 271mm x 216mm x 49mm and weighs 2.3kg. The extra dimensions and weight is the price to pay for the “Toughbook” name, which makes it resilient against dust, water and drops.

The Panasonic Toughbook 19 has been announced for release in Japan starting mid September. Pricing of the durable netbook however, is currently unknown at the moment. We do have the specs of the netbook though which includes:

10.4 inch display (1024×768 resolution)
Intel Core i5-540UM vPro CPU
160GB hard drive
2GB DDR3 RAM
Intel QM57 Express chipset
HDMI output
Windows 7 Professional

Panasonic will also be releasing a larger Toughbook in Japan at the same time, the Toughbook 31. It shares many similar features of the Toughbook 19 but, comes with a 13.1 inch display and an Intel Core i5-520M vPro CPU. Likewise, pricing is currently unavailable for the Panasonic Toughbook 31.

The Toughbook is of course known for its toughness but Panasonic has a new model which not only can withstand a tremendous amount of punishment but is also lightest in its class.

The new Toughbook C1 weighs in at just 1.45kg and is a convertible tablet PC. Another innovation to this laptop line is the inclusion of an Intel Core i5 2.4GHz CPU and an optional multitouch screen. What’s more is that this touchscreen can be used while wearing gloves so it’s perfect for field operations and military use.

Toughbook C1

12.1″ 1280 x 800 LCD

2.4GHz Core i5

2GB RAM

250GB HDD

Windows 7 or XP

802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, WWAN

5-hour battery life

Weight: 1.45kg

On top of the specs above, the device is spill-resistant, shock- and vibration-proof and has a rugged magnesium alloy case. So if you’re ready to move up from your netbook into the big leagues or just need a notebook for the hazards of your field job, this would probably be one device that’s on top of your list. It’ll be available for US$2499 and bundles in a standard 3-year warranty.

Panasonic has just launched a new netbook under its “Let’s Go” ultraportable notebook series. Our netbook here is called the – Let’s Note netbook. And what makes this new netbook exciting is the fact that it doesn’t come with the usual Intel Atom N450 1.6GHz CPU but is instead packed with the Intel Core i7-650UM VPro 1.20GHz CPU.

You know what’s special about this CPU on a 10.1-inch netbook, it will be able to give out up to 7.5 hours of battery life despite having only a 3-cell 3100mAh battery. Amazing feat, right?

Anyway, other features of this netbook include – 2GB of RAM upgradeable up to 4GB, 250GB of HDD, integrated graphics card, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, SD/SDHC card slot, USB 2.0 ports, VGA out, and Windows 7 Pro 32-bit.

The Panasonic Let’s Note netbook will hit store shelves on February 17th in Japan. No words yet on whether it will be released internationally. Likewise, pricing information is also not available as of this time.
