If you consider yourself one of the many people who are currently longing for your very own Windows 8 tablet PC (a proper one, that is), then you want to keep your eyes peeled for what’s going to happen by September-October of this year. Because according to a report on the Chinese site DigiTimes, that is when companies like Asus, Acer, Samsung, Lenovo, and HP can be expected to launch their x86-based Windows 8 tablet PCs in the market. What exactly are they waiting for? Possibly perfection, but it’s also said that these same companies, along with several others like Samsung, Toshiba, and Sony, have plans to launch Windows 8 on ARM (WoA) offerings as well. We won’t be seeing any official releases for devices of that kind until early 2013, though. This is all according to the same unnamed source cited by DigiTimes in its report. The only thing that’s really sure at the moment is that you will still have time to save up for these babies for when they actually do get released in the market. Keep it here for updates.

Google’s very own Eric Schmidt has now pretty much informed the entire world about the tentative release date of the forthcoming Android OS update that will “unite” the platform. Although it’s already known that the next Android update called “Ice Cream Sandwich” will be released some time in Q4 of 2011, we now have exact dates–sort of.

Speaking at the Dreamforce conference in San Francisco, Eric Schmidt sort of casually mentioned that Ice Cream Sandwich is scheduled for a release in either October or November of this year. So you’ve got about a month or two of waiting left until the chance to enjoy Android 4.0 finally becomes available to you. Ice Cream Sandwich is a big future Android release that many Android users are waiting for, as it is said to be a Honeycomb and Gingerbread combo of some sort. That ought to be pretty exciting, and should interest smartphone and tablet users alike.

Those Honeycomb tablets from Asus, Acer, Motorola and Samsung are looking mighty fine, but if you prefer to have an operating system that’s closer to the desktop than anything else, you might want to take a look at the Gigabyte S1080 tablet PC. Unlike some other tablets that have been announced and released in the market recently, the Gigabyte S1080 doesn’t run iOS or Android. Instead, it uses Windows 7. As you can imagine, using the Gigabyte S1080 would be like using a laptop without the keyboard. That is the very definition of a touchscreen equipped tablet computer, after all.

Although Gigabyte is better known in the desktop computing space as a producer of excellent and highly durable motherboards, they have set their foot on the tablet market to try and give users what they need: a real mobile computer with desktop grade programs instead of applications that usually can’t be used for real work. The innards of the Gigabyte S1080 contain an Intel Atom N570 dual core CPU and a 320GB hard drive. Its screen measures 10.1-inches diagonally and it weighs a hefty 895 grams. If the weight seems too much, this is because the Gigabyte S1080 uses a larger battery in order to power its Intel processor.

It is said that the Gigabyte S1080 will come out in the US and Taiwan soon, and the retail price is expected to hover around 700 Euros or about $1,000 USD. It’s a bit more expensive than other tablets you can buy, but then again, it’s just not the same as any of those other devices either.

There were recent reports that said demand for the Asus Eee Pad Transformer is so high that it actually sold out in some stores where it became available. But the truth, as it turns out, is that several branches of Best Buy and Target simply haven’t even received their supply of the Eee Pad Transformer yet, which led to them declaring the device as sold out to some of the people who actually showed up to buy it. Apparently, the delivery date of the Eee Pad Transformer to these certain stores has been pushed back to mid-May at the earliest, so it really can’t be had at the moment no matter how hard you try. Whether it is actually sold out or not really has nothing to do with it.

Although they are quite busy preparing some new smartphones expected to launch later this year with Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 operating system, LG have announced plans to launch an Android-powered tablet PC by the fourth quarter of this year, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. The launch date of LG’s Android-powered tablet will come a full quarter behind of its rival Samsung’s own Android-powered tablet PC. LG hasn’t been kind with the type of details that the average consumer would want to know (i.e. specs, initial market and price) but it is expected that their device will come out on top of the Android-based tablet PC market when it finally launches near the end of the year.

Seems like Asus has prepped a little something to go against Acer’s Aspire Revo nettop shortly after it comes out in May. According to info posted on Blogeee, Asus will release an Asus EeeBOX B208 nettop with Intel’s Atom 330 chip and ATI Radeon HD 4350 with 256MB video RAM come June of this year. Official pricing has not yet been revealed. Also part of the Asus EeeBOX B208′s specs are the following: 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD with 10GB Eee Storage, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, built-in card reader, 4 USB ports, HDMI out, DVI-D port, built-in battery with UPS function, Bluetooth connectivity and 1kg weight. I’m not too sure about this being a pure desktop replacement, but for space-saving it will certainly be useful, and will definitely go nicely with any Asus netbook you may already have.

Besides Samsung, there is another famous cellphone-making company dabbling in netbooks. That, of course, is LG, and its latest model–the LG X120–is said to be on schedule for a release in the Japanese before the end of the month, followed by a wider release in April. All things considered, the LG X120 doesn’t really differ much from netbooks in its category. It’s got a standard 10-inch screen, 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, 160GB hard drive, 1GB RAM, Wi-Fi and either a 3-cell or 6-cell battery. It does sport an inbuilt HSPA modem, though, so it would be a great choice for mobile computing enthusiasts who are fond of doing work on the go.

Are you one of the many Americans waiting for the official arrival of UMID’s M1 MID in local stores? Well, I have good news and bad news. The good news is, the M1 definitely is coming to the U.S. in the future. The bad news is, it’s not going to happen right away. This is according to information gathered by Pocketables, who say UMID’s plans for a U.S. release for the M1 MID are still underway, however, a version of the said device that’s compatible with U.S. 3G networks still isn’t ready yet. It could come in the next few months, or it could come next year. Bottom line is, you’re gonna have to wait awhile if you’re in the U.S. and want to get yourself a UMID M1. And that’s the truth.
