There were recent reports that said demand for the Asus Eee Pad Transformer is so high that it actually sold out in some stores where it became available. But the truth, as it turns out, is that several branches of Best Buy and Target simply haven’t even received their supply of the Eee Pad Transformer yet, which led to them declaring the device as sold out to some of the people who actually showed up to buy it. Apparently, the delivery date of the Eee Pad Transformer to these certain stores has been pushed back to mid-May at the earliest, so it really can’t be had at the moment no matter how hard you try. Whether it is actually sold out or not really has nothing to do with it.

In an investor conference held last April 29, Asus revealed that it recorded a net operating margin of 4.68% and a gross margin of 15.52% during the first quarter of 2011. They made the most sales during this quarter in the Asia-Pacific region which accounted for 48% of sales, followed by Europe at 37% and other regions at a combined 15%.

In a detailed breakdown, it was revealed that 56% of overall revenues for Asus during Q1 2011 came from notebooks, 19% came from motherboards and cards, 11% from others, 1% from handsets and just 13% from their Eee PCs. This 13% of revenue actually translates to 1.3 million units shipped, and Asus is planning to hit the same number of shipped units for the second quarter of 2011. With the release of the Eee Pad Transformer, perhaps sales of their Eee PCs might even increase.

Once the little Taiwanese PC maker that could, Asus is now counted as the 5th largest PC maker in the world in terms of sales, tied with Toshiba and trailing PC market bigshots HP, Dell, Acer, and Lenovo. Asus’s 4.3 million PC shipments during the second quarter of 2010 accounted for 5.3% of the worldwide market, according to research conducted by IDC. Their PC shipments grew 84 percent during the quarter, which is not surprising given the popularity of its desktop and mobile computing products, notably those under the Eee brand. The growth of Asus has caused the entire PC market itself to grow 22% during the second quarter of 2010, according to the same research.

Acer is currently enjoying sales of 1.3 million units of notebooks for 2009 in their homeland of Taiwan, and expects this number to be greater throughout the year 2010. Scott Lin, president of Acer Taiwan notes that Taiwan’s market scale is still rather small so a volume of 1.5-1.6 million units should be deemed significant. Lin is confident that many customers will replace their current notebooks with new ones by the second half of 2010, but mentions that netbook’s share of total notebook demand will drop gradually from 30-40% to 20%. Perhaps this is why Acer has been rather conservative with the introduction of new netbooks lately, leaving it to the likes of Samsung and MSI to introduce several new netbook models.

Asustek are aiming to ship 20 million notebooks throughout 2010, overtaking Toshiba and Lenovo. If they succeed, it will make them the fifth largest vendor worldwide.

From the 20 million, 8 million is expected to come from netbook sales. Asus are also expecting 30% of shipments to be from notebooks supporting USB 3.0. It’s unclear whether this is just from notebooks they’re aiming for 30% or if they will be adding it to their netbook line and expect 30% of total sales to be accounted to USB 3.0.

During the year 2009, we experienced what some would call the “netbook boom” wherein sales of these small devices which we here at Eee PC blog all know and love have skyrocketed. I personally believe sales of netbooks would only continue to rise as they get even more powerful, more portable, and more enjoyable in the future. But even now, it is obvious to anyone (even those who do not follow the netbook scene) that netbooks are showing up nearly everywhere.

A lot of companies are making big bucks with sales of netbooks. So it wouldn’t be far-fetched to think that Intel, the one who supplies the Atom processors being used in most netbooks nowadays, are also seeing sales of this particular processor go through the roof and taking up a huge percentage of their sales.

However, as it turns out, Intel’s Atom socket only accounts for 5% of their overall sales, with the recently introduced LGA 1156 socket overtaking it for second place with 18% and LGA 775 still reigning as top dog with 77% of overall sales. Intel’s high-end LGA 1136 socket takes up only 1% of sales which means that it is behind the Atom socket at least in this respect.

Intel projects that by the end of this year, Atom socket sales would rise to 7%.

Due to the ‘rebrandability’ of the MSI Wind netbook, DigiTimes have reported that sales have been boosted hugely and the Wind (and all of it’s rebranded brothers and sisters) is expected to have shipped around 700,000 units by the end of 2008 – more than MSI expected to sell, pushing them closer to the top ten hardware vendor list.

There are many rebranded versions of the MSI Wind in Asia and Europe, which are simply the MSI netbook with a different name attached to them. It seems that customers are clambering to buy these ‘clones’ of the Wind and with a solid build and decent specs for a netbook, it’s easy to see why.

Ironically, 700,000 sales would equal the amount of Asus Eee PC’s sold in September 08 which clearly shows that MSI still have a long way to go if they are going to compete with Asus in this market.

It will only be a matter of time before our traditional notebooks are wiped out from face of the consumer PC market. Everybody seems to be so into netbooks lately that 9 out 10 most popular laptops in Amazon are netbooks. The remaining slot filled up by a notebook belongs to Apple’s 13.3-inch MacBook.

Yes folks, we might be seeing the demise of the notebook PCs right infront of us. Contrary to a Digitimes report where it claims the the boundaries between notebooks and netbooks may disappear in 2009, it looks like it’s not the boundaries, but the notebooks who might disappear soon.

Well, if we will take into account this Amazon listing.

Anyway, going to the Amazon listing for the most popular laptops, we are looking at the Acer Aspire One Sapphire Blue model, finally beating the Eee PC. The A1 is sitting comfortably at the number one spot, closely followed by the Eee PC 1000H 80GB model, MSI Wind U100, Eee PC 1000H with 160GB storage then going back to Aspire One again only this time it’s the Whiteversion.

Completing the cast of Amazon’s top 10 list of laptops are; the MacBook, Aspire One with 8GB SSD, Eee PC 900, MSI Wind with 120GB SSD, and the Aspire One with 160GB hard drive.
