Samsung NC20
The Samsung NC20 is probably one of the most anticipated netbooks that hasn’t been released yet. Well, according to Laptop, it will finally be available in the U.S., albeit exclusive from Newegg, starting on March 16th. It will be available in black, with a 5900 mAh battery for a still unspecified price. You can use Amazon UK’s price for reference, though, and that puts it at about $478 USD. Check out Laptop’s post with the link below for more info and a bit of hands-on first impressions.

Although Amazon UK has started accepting pre-orders for Samsung’s new NC20 netbook, it is only now that Samsung has issued an official announcement.

As previously reported, the Samsung NC20 will have the VIA processor instead of the usual Intel Atom CPU, specifically the 1.3GHz VIA Nano ULV Processor. Actually everything about the Samsung NC20 is bigger than the usual 10-inch netbooks in the market today.

Here are the official specs of the Samsung NC20 {via Ubergizmo}:

  • Screen: 12.1” LED WXGA (1280 x 800)
  • CPU: VIA Nano™ ULV Processor U2250 (1.3+GHz, 800MHz)
  • Chipset: VIA VX800 Unified Digital Media IGP Chipset
  • Graphics: Integrated VIA Chrome9™ with DirectX 9.0 3D graphics support and hardware video acceleration
  • OS: Microsoft R Windows XP Home Edition
  • Memory: 1GB DDR2 (1*SODMM)
  • Storage: 160GB HDD (9.5mmH 2.5’’HDD, SATA)
  • Webcam: 1.3 Mega pixels web camera
  • LAN: 10/100Mbps LAN
  • Wireless: Atheros 802.11 b/g
  • Bluetooth: 2.0+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate)
  • I/O Ports: USB2.0 x 3, Ethernet LAN, 3-in-1 card reader
  • Battery: 6 cells Li-ion Battery Standard
  • Dimensions: 292.4mm x 217mm x 30.7mm
  • Weight: 1.52kg
  • Special Features: 6.5 hours battery life
  • Colors: White

And since there was no official pricing announcement, we’ll take it to mean that the previous published price as stated in the Amazon UK site still holds true – $489.

The long-awaited 12-inch Samsung NC20 has just gone up for pre-order on Amazon UK, and anyone living in or near the UK can take advantage of this sale now. In case you’ve forgotten, the NC20 is a follow-up to the 10-inch NC10, and features Via’s Nano processor, first and foremost, instead of an Intel Atom like most other netbooks available in the market today. It will also probably run Windows 7 easily, though it would be better to confirm it when the unit actually ships. Its price is a bit steep at around $489 USD, but it should be well worth the money, especially when it’s bundled with a standard 6-cell battery.

samsung-nc20-battery-life
In case you were curious about the Samsung NC20’s battery life, and wanted to know if it was any better than that of the Samsung NC10, NetbookNews.de has posted a short Samsung NC20 battery life benchmarking story which shows how long the NC20 lasts on a single charge in different situations. With all the setting maxed and wireless connectivity on, the Samsung NC20 achieved just a little over 2 hours of battery life. While a standard test yielded exactly 4 hours of juice. Not bad for a battery that’s bundled with the device. It should last longer with aftermarket 6-cell batteries, but the point is this: the Samsung NC20 provides great battery life out of the box, which is a good thing for mobile computing enthusiasts who are eyeing to get this 12-inch netbook.

The Samsung NC10 might be getting a new paint job, but let’s not forget that an entirely new netbook will soon be coming to a computer store near you. The one I’m talking about is the Samsung NC20, which as you might have guesses is the proper successor of the earlier mentioned netbook. Reportedly, it is already available in places like Germany and Ukraine, costing about 499 Euros or $659 USD. Of course it is at least $100 more expensive than the Samsung NC10, but that’s primarily because it has a bigger screen, among other things. The earlier reported release date of this netbook is supposed to be on February, but it doesn’t hurt that it’s been made available early, at least in some places.
