Following on from rumors circulating yesterday, more rumors are now abound that Samsung’s next generation tablet will indeed sport a display larger than 10 inches. Rumors are pointing to Samsung releasing an Android powered tablet with an 11.6 inch display.

German site Tabtech suggests that the tablet will be unveiled at MWC 2012 and design wise, it features a narrow frame which will make it only slightly larger than the Galaxy Tab 10.1 already available from Samsung. Yesterday the claims came from an Android and Me reported who spotted the prototype at CES and snapped some photos of it, before promptly being asked to delete them by Samsung representatives.

Both sources cite that the 11.6 inch Samsung Galaxy tablet will have a resolution of 2560×1600 and a 2GHz dual core Exynos 5250 processor along with Android 4.0 preinstalled. The tablet is also rumored to come with a Smart Pen stylus like that found on the 5 inch Samsung Galaxy Note.

They will automatically qualify to get a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket or a Samsung Galaxy S2 for free. Isn’t that great?

Far from unifying the smartphone and tablet PC markets, it looks like the introduction of Google Android 4.0 a.k.a. Ice Cream Sandwich may have made the gap between the two market spaces even wider. Android 4.0 brings many improvements over Honeycomb, its predecessor which can be found on many of today’s most popular smartphones and a handful of tablet PCs. Although you might think that PC vendors would love the idea of Google unifying all development efforts towards just one operating system, the reality is a lot more complicated than that.

At the official announcement Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich yesterday, the focus was mainly on Samsung’s new Galaxy Nexus, a device with a very large screen, to be sure, but is certainly not something that would be considered a tablet PC. What has gotten certain PC makers and some market watchers a bit worried is the fact that Google made no mention of tablets at all at yesterday’s official Ice Cream Sandwich announcement. Does this mean there will be a renewed focus on the smartphone space and tablet PC makers will be left out of from now on?

This is a major concern for tablet PC makers who are pinning their hopes on Android to compete with Apple’s iPad. With the imminent launch of the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime, Google is expected to give a lot more than just a few new UI enhancements and novel features for the market of Android tablets to really catch up to the competition.

The Samsung 600B5B with the

15.6 inch screen is certainly

 on the most attractive laptop

in the market but for some

business class people, it could

 be a good choice given its

decent specs and various security

options. The 600B5B is aimed

totally at the business class.

It therefore does not possess

 fancy swirling patterns and

 bright colours to impress

the buyer. In fact it does

not need to be beautiful at

 all, just decent looks will

 do. When closed, the 600B5B

has a very professional look,

 thanks partly to its all-black

 design. The only thing that

breaks up the surface of the

shell is the subtle Samsung logo.

 The chassis is made from plastic,

 with a rubberised coating that

 we're quite keen on. The laptop's

exterior isn't what you'd call

 interesting, but it would match

 a sharp suit and black leather

briefcase well. Weighing at 2.5

 kgs, its pretty light for one

to carry without ending up with

 a sore shoulder.  Measuring 370

 by 35 by 248mm, the 600B5B

 should also fit in most

 briefcases. The isolated keys,

 liked by many are missing on

the keyboard. Samsung has instead

 opted for the raised, edge-to-edge

 variety. That makes the keyboard

seem slightly outdated. At least

 the keyboard is pretty comfortable

 to type on, even for long periods.

 So for a person wishing to work

all night, it’s a good companion.

 The trackpad is a decent size

and has the same rubberised

coating as the keyboard surround.

 One would feel pretty comfortable

 sliding the fingers on them.

There's also a track point plonked

in between the G, H and B keys for

 you to navigate with, complete

with an extra set of buttons above

 the trackpad. The 15.6 inch wide

screen sports a mal finished

coating, so it won't show a load

 of distracting reflections under

 bright light.  With a resolution

 of 1,600x900 pixels,, it feels

really pleasing for a screen of

its size. Where performance is

concerned, it quite packs a punch.

 There is a 2.5GHz, dual-core Intel

 Core i5-2520M processor teamed up

 with 4GB of RAM under the hood.

 Though it lacks a bit on the gaming

 experience, but considering the

audience its aimed at, it won’t be

 much of a bother. The battery

backup is decent as well, and if

 its mainly used for office purpose,

 without making use of the video or

 wireless Internet, one should be

able to get upwards of 4 hours of

 constant use out of it. For

connectivity, there are two USB

3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port, a USB/eSATA

 port, and an Ethernet port. There's

 a DVD drive too, as well as a 1.3

-megapixel webcam for all kinds of

 video-conferencing fun. To some

things up, it is a decent laptop,

 capable of going through the office

 tasks pretty easily.

Apparently, Intel still won’t budge and just won’t give PC makers such as Acer the CPU price subsidy necessary to launch sub-$1000 ultrabooks. And even though people like Acer Taiwan president Scott Lin appear confident about future sales of ultrabooks (compared with tablet PCs), it seems that the whole industry is a bit cautiously optimistic about the whole thing.

Knowing that PC makers are at least going to need something to help further adoption of ultrabooks once they actually become available, Intel plans on increasing its marketing subsidies to notebook vendors to attract them into promoting the new devices, according to a report on DigiTimes. Now, this might mean that Acer, Asus, and other ultrabook vendors will have to come up with some ridiculous promos to get people to buy their stuff, but let’s just give them the benefit of the doubt.

The good news is that sub-$1000 ultrabooks are still indeed on their way. Unfortunately, these might not make it to market until the 2nd quarter of 2012, in April, with the introduction of Intel’s Ivy Bridge platform. So if you aren’t in a hurry to purchase an ultrabook, you’re in for a great big discount provided that you can keep waiting it out for the next six months.

Acer Taiwan president Scott Lin knows that tablet PCs are currently selling like hotcakes. Yes, as someone who leads a company that sells devices being taken over by these slate-like contraptions on the market, Lin is bound to realize just how much of an impact tablet PCs are having on computers such as notebooks these days. Well, the tablet PC may be enjoying its ride in the waves of success right now, but according to Lin, upcoming Ultrabooks such as the Acer Aspire S3 will be the ones having the last laugh. Lin’s theory is that since ultrabooks can go toe to toe with tablet PCs not just in terms of performance but also in terms of thinness and lightness, consumers will soon realize that it’s ultrabooks that they want to buy instead of another iTablet from some fruity company in California. Lin bets that Windows 8-powered ultrabooks will be the prime driving force of PC makers in taking the market back from tablets. In a few months, we should be able to see if there’s any truth at all in what’s been said above.

The Samsung Series 5 Chromebook is the first laptop to use Google Chrome OS operating system. The software gets rid of the conventional start menu and folder system and relies almost entirely on browser based operations. The Series 5 laptop is in itself well-built, with a dual-core, 1.66GHz Intel Atom N570 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a beautifully bright and clear screen. The machine has a super fast start up which may please quite a lot of buyers though the price is a bit on the higher side. Although it may seem odd initially, there are numerous reasons why one may wish to opt for an operating system based entirely around a Web browser. Although one won’t be able to download the conventional apps like Adobe Photoshop, Windows Live Messenger and Microsoft Office on the hard drive, equivalent apps are available in the Chrome Web Store which can be easily downloaded and operated within the browser. The main advantage of this feature is that it allows a comparatively slow machine to perform processor-heavy tasks with utmost ease. All that the computer needs to do is keep the browser open. It’s a similar system to that used by game-streaming firm OnLive, which allows users to play demanding video games on low-end machines at home. It also makes the 5 series run smoothly as the apps no longer need to be installed on the hard disk. One more advantage of the 5 series is that since data files are stored locally on the laptop, it’s less at risk from viruses that can sneak into the machine and tamper with user data. It becomes all the more vital as the 5 series does not come with an antivirus software. Though the chrome OS looks very tempting from the outside there are reasons why one should avoid it as well. The whole concept of operating permanently in the cloud — a concept that the Series 5 is sold on — is probably one that most users would find difficult to live with. This is because while certain Chrome Web Store apps, such as Angry Birds, allow the user to sync the app, so it can be played offline, but these apps are few and far between. Google Docs is not available offline, even though it has been promised for a while. If Google itself isn’t even able to sort out offline editing, it doesn’t spell good for the small developers. But on the hardware part, the Series 5 itself is an attractive laptop. Its 12.1-inch screen means it’s a portable size, and it’s only 20mm thick too. Weighing around 1.5kg, it isn’t the lightest machine on the market still is not the heaviest either and wont burden the users a big deal. The Samsung Series 5 Chromebook is well-built and pleasingly portable, but Chrome OS feels more like an experiment than a finished, polished product.
