Samsung Galaxy Note users may expect to get a new notification informing them of the availability of a new OTA software update for their devices to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. This has already happened to one Devin Balentina, who revealed in a Twitter post that the 318MB download will update the software on the Galaxy Note to the latest version of the Android software.

So what kind of neat new stuff have been included by Samsung in this software update which has been delayed not once, but twice? You get two updated apps with the Android 4.0 ICS update, which are the S Note App and the S Memo Widget. At least, those are the only things listed in the actual update notification (screenshot above).

There is no guarantee that this software update will be available in all regions or on all devices. For now, what seems clear is that Galaxy Note users who are with carriers such as AT&T may need to wait for an official release from the carrier itself before they can update their devices to Ice Cream Sandwich.

Have you got the time? To port Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich so that it is perfectly usable on a laptop computer? Well, one guy (codename leemgs) did, and he has now posted about it on YouTube for all to see. He hasn’t exactly laid out all the details as to how it was possible to install ICS on his full-size Samsung Sens R60 laptop, but in the video he posted, it can be seen that the OS is actually installed in a partition alongside other operating systems which likely include Windows and other Linux variants. This is what he had to say about the installation and the experience:

I ported the latest Android full source including several devices (e.g: Graphics, Wireless LAN, Wired LAN, Camera, Bluetooth, Sound, USB 2.0) into Intel X86-based Samsung Laptop successfully as a hobby when I was free. Now, this video shows Android ICS 4.0.4 on Samsung laptop R60+. In my experience, Android based laptop is useful sufficiently when I tested some functions like usability and convenience and performance and mobility.

Fancy spending a bit of your time doing this yourself? Take a look at what it looks like first by watching the video below, and then decide. It should be fun.
By now, reviewers have had more than enough time to test out Apple’s new iPad in comparion with not only the old one but also the many other tablet devices that are available in the market today. And if you’re looking to find out what Consumer Reports has to say about the new iPad on their own review for it, we have it here right now.

Based on the tests that Consumer Reports did over the course of the iPad 3′s availability in the market, it was found that not only does the new iPad outperform its predecessor–the iPad 2–but it also trumps pretty much every other tablet that’s available today overall. That’s quite an achievement for something that supposedly has slight problems with overheating and charging during usage.

The thing that helps the iPad take the cake, unsurprisingly, is its built-in high-res Retina display, which even the best OLED screen from Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 7.7 just can’t compete with. In terms of battery life, it seems that the iPad is also the one that offers the best value for money. The new iPad’s strengths should give other manufacturers something new to aspire to.

If you consider yourself one of the many people who are currently longing for your very own Windows 8 tablet PC (a proper one, that is), then you want to keep your eyes peeled for what’s going to happen by September-October of this year. Because according to a report on the Chinese site DigiTimes, that is when companies like Asus, Acer, Samsung, Lenovo, and HP can be expected to launch their x86-based Windows 8 tablet PCs in the market. What exactly are they waiting for? Possibly perfection, but it’s also said that these same companies, along with several others like Samsung, Toshiba, and Sony, have plans to launch Windows 8 on ARM (WoA) offerings as well. We won’t be seeing any official releases for devices of that kind until early 2013, though. This is all according to the same unnamed source cited by DigiTimes in its report. The only thing that’s really sure at the moment is that you will still have time to save up for these babies for when they actually do get released in the market. Keep it here for updates.

Following on from rumors circulating yesterday, more rumors are now abound that Samsung’s next generation tablet will indeed sport a display larger than 10 inches. Rumors are pointing to Samsung releasing an Android powered tablet with an 11.6 inch display.

German site Tabtech suggests that the tablet will be unveiled at MWC 2012 and design wise, it features a narrow frame which will make it only slightly larger than the Galaxy Tab 10.1 already available from Samsung. Yesterday the claims came from an Android and Me reported who spotted the prototype at CES and snapped some photos of it, before promptly being asked to delete them by Samsung representatives.

Both sources cite that the 11.6 inch Samsung Galaxy tablet will have a resolution of 2560×1600 and a 2GHz dual core Exynos 5250 processor along with Android 4.0 preinstalled. The tablet is also rumored to come with a Smart Pen stylus like that found on the 5 inch Samsung Galaxy Note.

The above photo is a mock up photo from TabTech of what an 11.6 inch Samsung Galaxy tablet could look like.

Good news for those who look in to another Samsung’s best! AT&T together with Samsung have just revealed that this coming November 20, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 with LTE will be released in the market. But there’s more in store for consumers of AT&T who will avail a Galaxy Tab 8.9 with LTE on a 2-year contract. They will automatically qualify to get a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket or a Samsung Galaxy S2 for free. Isn’t that great?

If you’re thinking how Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 would differ from other devices of the likes, check out the outstanding features behind this gadget. First, this is a 4th Generation Long Term Evolution (LTE) tab by 4G HSPA+ and with Android 3.2. It has luminous 8.9-inch HD widescreen that goes with 16 GB internal memory and expandable up to 32GB with 1GB RAM. You can also capture photos using this Samsung Galaxy through two cameras having 2 to 3.2 megapixels with its LED flash.

However, before settling to any of AT&T’s plans, you should consider the fact that 4G LTE as of the moment has limited access coverage for most areas. Though, they’re just in the process of adding new markets for this kind of service particularly in Las Vegas, Oklahoma City, Kansas City, Charlotte, Indianapolis and Puerto Rico as well.

Far from unifying the smartphone and tablet PC markets, it looks like the introduction of Google Android 4.0 a.k.a. Ice Cream Sandwich may have made the gap between the two market spaces even wider. Android 4.0 brings many improvements over Honeycomb, its predecessor which can be found on many of today’s most popular smartphones and a handful of tablet PCs. Although you might think that PC vendors would love the idea of Google unifying all development efforts towards just one operating system, the reality is a lot more complicated than that.

At the official announcement Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich yesterday, the focus was mainly on Samsung’s new Galaxy Nexus, a device with a very large screen, to be sure, but is certainly not something that would be considered a tablet PC. What has gotten certain PC makers and some market watchers a bit worried is the fact that Google made no mention of tablets at all at yesterday’s official Ice Cream Sandwich announcement. Does this mean there will be a renewed focus on the smartphone space and tablet PC makers will be left out of from now on?

This is a major concern for tablet PC makers who are pinning their hopes on Android to compete with Apple’s iPad. With the imminent launch of the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime, Google is expected to give a lot more than just a few new UI enhancements and novel features for the market of Android tablets to really catch up to the competition.

15.6 inch screen is certainly

on the most attractive laptop

in the market but for some

business class people, it could

be a good choice given its

decent specs and various security

options. The 600B5B is aimed

totally at the business class.

It therefore does not possess

fancy swirling patterns and

bright colours to impress

the buyer. In fact it does

not need to be beautiful at

all, just decent looks will

do. When closed, the 600B5B

has a very professional look,

thanks partly to its all-black

design. The only thing that

breaks up the surface of the

shell is the subtle Samsung logo.

The chassis is made from plastic,

with a rubberised coating that

we're quite keen on. The laptop's

exterior isn't what you'd call

interesting, but it would match

a sharp suit and black leather

briefcase well. Weighing at 2.5

kgs, its pretty light for one

to carry without ending up with

a sore shoulder. Measuring 370

by 35 by 248mm, the 600B5B

should also fit in most

briefcases. The isolated keys,

liked by many are missing on

the keyboard. Samsung has instead

opted for the raised, edge-to-edge

variety. That makes the keyboard

seem slightly outdated. At least

the keyboard is pretty comfortable

to type on, even for long periods.

So for a person wishing to work

all night, it’s a good companion.

The trackpad is a decent size

and has the same rubberised

coating as the keyboard surround.

One would feel pretty comfortable

sliding the fingers on them.

There's also a track point plonked

in between the G, H and B keys for

you to navigate with, complete

with an extra set of buttons above

the trackpad. The 15.6 inch wide

screen sports a mal finished

coating, so it won't show a load

of distracting reflections under

bright light. With a resolution

of 1,600x900 pixels,, it feels

really pleasing for a screen of

its size. Where performance is

concerned, it quite packs a punch.

There is a 2.5GHz, dual-core Intel

Core i5-2520M processor teamed up

with 4GB of RAM under the hood.

Though it lacks a bit on the gaming

experience, but considering the

audience its aimed at, it won’t be

much of a bother. The battery

backup is decent as well, and if

its mainly used for office purpose,

without making use of the video or

wireless Internet, one should be

able to get upwards of 4 hours of

constant use out of it. For

connectivity, there are two USB

3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port, a USB/eSATA

port, and an Ethernet port. There's

a DVD drive too, as well as a 1.3

-megapixel webcam for all kinds of

video-conferencing fun. To some

things up, it is a decent laptop,

capable of going through the office

tasks pretty easily.

Apparently, Intel still won’t budge and just won’t give PC makers such as Acer the CPU price subsidy necessary to launch sub-$1000 ultrabooks. And even though people like Acer Taiwan president Scott Lin appear confident about future sales of ultrabooks (compared with tablet PCs), it seems that the whole industry is a bit cautiously optimistic about the whole thing.

Knowing that PC makers are at least going to need something to help further adoption of ultrabooks once they actually become available, Intel plans on increasing its marketing subsidies to notebook vendors to attract them into promoting the new devices, according to a report on DigiTimes. Now, this might mean that Acer, Asus, and other ultrabook vendors will have to come up with some ridiculous promos to get people to buy their stuff, but let’s just give them the benefit of the doubt.

The good news is that sub-$1000 ultrabooks are still indeed on their way. Unfortunately, these might not make it to market until the 2nd quarter of 2012, in April, with the introduction of Intel’s Ivy Bridge platform. So if you aren’t in a hurry to purchase an ultrabook, you’re in for a great big discount provided that you can keep waiting it out for the next six months.
