Without too much noise, Sony has upgraded its Sony VAIO P netbooks to make in tune with the requirements of Windows 7. To make it worthy of the new OS, Sony has also bumped the VAIO P’s specs.

So now you can get this ultraportable machine equipped with a 2 GHz Atom CPU, 256 GB SSD plus a champagne-colored shell. This puts the U.S. version of the Sony VAIO P at par with its Japanese counterpart.

The new models will start arriving Verizon shops sometime in November. It will set you back for around $1,900, if in case you’re keen to get one.

Looks like a mobile carrier has finally decided to take the expensive Sony Vaio P netbook. Words on the streets say that Verizon might actually offer the Sony Vaio P under its mobile data plan. If you would recall, Verizon currently has three netbooks under its fold – the Gateway LT2016U, HP Mini 311 and Mini 110.

If this rumor is true, the Sony Vaio P will actually be the smallest netbook under Verizon’s line-up.

What is not clear from though is whether the Sony Vaio P which Verizon will offer will be running Windows 7 since the rumored hard drive will be around 160GB. But the Sony Vaio P doesn’t have that capacity though.

The Sony Vaio P will be offered by Verizon for around $300 plus a two-year service agreement minus $100 rebate.

While we all await for the release of Sony’s highly anticipated Sony Vaio X machine, the Sony UK site is currently displaying three new configurations of Sony’s first ultraportable machine – the Sony Vaio P. Nothing much has been done with regards to the form factor of these Sony Vaio Ps. But Sony decided instead to up the ante when it comes to the machines’ computing power.

So, at the low-end we have a Sony Vaio P sporting a 1.86GHz Atom Processor while at the highest end is a Sony Vaio P with 2.0 GHz Atom Z550. Obviously these Sony Vaio P’s are being prepped up in time for the release of Windows 7. Sony obviously doesn’t want to be left behind in the Windows 7 frenzy.

No words on pricing yet.

While Sony is about to release its first real netbook, the Sony Vaio W series, it is still trying to pull out some last straw for its Sony Vaio P mini notebook. Latest we heard is that Sony Japan is upgrading the Sony Vaio P to include a WiMAX option.

This may a good news for those who are still eyeing the Sony Vaio P even if the Sony Vaio W is already in the pipeline. But then the WiMAX option obviously comes with a price. To get this option, you need to add $108 to the current base price of the Sony Vaio P. So, how much do you think a WiMAX-enabled Sony Vaio P cost? Too expensive to mention perhaps.

In addition to the WiMAX option’s cost, users considering this new Sony Vaio P would also have to think of the subscription fee to the WiMAX service.

And what will get out of this additional features and cost? – internet speed of up to 12Mbps.

The Sony Vaio P with WiMAX option will be available for pre-order in Japan on the 27th of July and will be ship to brave souls on the 30th.

Any takers?

Well today we can report that the mini laptop is available to pre-order with higher specs and a higher price. Sony have recently released their Signature Collection of Vaio notebooks which includes the Vaio P. Each notebook has a limited quantity, with the Vaio P currently at 1000 units left. The Signature Collection Vaio P comes in a glossy black. Specs wise it has 2GB of RAM, 1.86GHz CPU and an SSD with 256GB. The higher, more reasonable specifications however don’t come at a reasonable price. The Vaio P699E/Q is priced at $2000.

A lot still needs tweaking before the OS could be used every day, but overall the members who hacked the Vaio claim it runs better than it’s native OS, Windows Vista. Currently the WiFi, ethernet and 3G aren’t working, so going online isn’t feasible. Also the GPS currently isn’t working under OS X. Neither can 3D games or apps be run due to missing video chip drivers, which weren’t good on Vista either.

UQ Communications and Sony Japan are currently working on bringing the WiMax technology to the Vaio P. UQ WiMax is only available in Japan, so a WiMax Sony Vaio P will be limited to Japan only. The companies are working on getting WiMax built into the Pocketable notebook. Currently there’s no estimated release date, or even a time frame yet, but we’ll keep you informed of any updates.

Likewise, also only in Japan, the Sony Vaio P has been fitted with the latest and fastest Atom processor, the 2GHz Z550. A forum member of Pocketables has already got hold of the latest upgraded Vaio P and bench marked it. The Vaio P has previously been benchmarked with the prior options. The results are almost twice as much compared to the entry level Vaio. It seems that it’s still the SSD which makes the most impact.

A while back we reported on a hack which enabled HSDPA on the Sony Vaio P. The hack only worked on US models of the P and with AT&T and T-Mobile sim cards. Today we can report that, thanks to DC-unlocker and Conics.net, non US models can also be hacked. The hack allows the Globetrotter MO40x modem to be unlocked and display the connected sim as being connected through HSDPA. For the time being, the DC-unlocker hack only works on non US models, as the US Vaio P’s contain a different chipset.

Currently, Sony’s Vaio P “not a netbook” netbook features fairly low specs for the price, and it wouldn’t hurt if it received any upgrades of some sort within the next 6 months. Fortunately, it looks like this is exactly what Sony has in mind, as six new model numbers of the Vaio P have reportedly been spotted, with upgrades along the lines of using a better processor, RAM or larger SSD drive. The new Vaio P’s ought to still be called Sony Vaio Ps, but there will be three models according to the leak, which are the P710, P730A and P730T. Overall, these different models don’t look like they’ll differ much in terms of features, but will be available in different colors. Sony hasn’t confirmed any of the above information, but check back here for an update regarding this rumor within the next few weeks.
