The upcoming Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A Ivy Bridge notebook is now available for pre-order on the Czech site Heureka, and in its standard high-end configuration with a 256GB SSD and 1.9GHz Intel Core i7 chip, the asking price is a cool 31,000 CZK or about $1,625 USD.

For that much money, you can expect to get a full HD IPS 13.3-inch display, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, HDMI and VGA output, a 10-hour battery, built-in card reading capabilities, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.0. And of course, it has a backlit keyboard. Keep in mind, though, that even if you can pre-order this particular model right now, you may have to wait until June to actually get your hands on it since that’s when the second-generation Ultrabooks such as this one are supposed to get released in the market.

Also, if you can somehow wait until June actually arrives, you’ll get to see other configurations of this same notebook, including one that sports an 11-inch screen and somewhat lower-level specs (that still pack an Ivy Bridge punch). More details on that are going to be posted here as soon as they become available.

Intel is offering new Solid State Drives (SSDs) that will significantly decrease the time it takes for laptops to boot and to load applications. These storage devices also prolong battery life because the time that the hard disk spins is lowered.

When compared with traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), SSDs access data faster, which enables them to reduce boot times. However, since they are a new technology, they are also costly, and their storage capacities are generally smaller.

Some manufacturers, in order to offer SSD performance, use SSDs as secondary storage and traditional HDDs as primary storage.

Intel has already previously released SSDs, however, these earlier models are slower. A new series called the 313 has capacities of 20 GB and 24 GB. The former is priced at $113 on Amazon, meanwhile the latter costs $138.

These SSDs are designed for ultrabooks or devices which carry Intel CPUs and offer a fast storage device.

They are perfect for Intel’s Smart Connect feature, which enables ultrabooks to remain connected to the Internet even on sleep mode. This means that social network updates and e-mail may still be received in this state.

Intel’s new SSDs are created with a 25 nanometer process. On the other hand, earlier models had a 34 nanometer process.

Now that Dell actually has plans to release a set of touchscreen tablet slates soon, I wonder what’s the use of getting a Dell Mini 9 modded into a tablet. For the sheer awesome geek cred of course!

The B-rock is now selling his beloved tablet netbook to fund some important housing choices and you can help him out. He’s offering a lot to go with the modded device including a lot of internal gadgets like a TV tuner, accelerometer, GPS, and Bluetooth plus a maxed out rig of 2GB RAM and 32GB SSD. He’s also up for a couple of weeks worth of after-sales tech support should you need it.

If you think you’ve heard about this before, well it was featured in a lot of blogs before and he did previously put it up for sale as a hackintosh though Apple balked at that and that sale didn’t go through. If you want to grab this fine little device, head over to eBay right now and bid on it! B-rock will ship to folks in North America and some parts of Europe.

A member of the classic Eee User forum named phertiker (cool nick!) just tore apart his own Asus Eee PC T101MT just for the fun of it. Well, that and he really wanted to stick an SSD in to it. It voided his warranty, but hey you got to see something a few mortals have yet glanced upon – the innards of Asus’ latest touchscreen wonder. More gory details in the link below (plus a guide to the tear-down).

One of the most ideal setups for mobile work is having an SSD paired with a Pine Trail netbook or even better a CULV notebook. OCZ and Active Media, which we mentioned before, are banking on people upgrading to one of these solid state disks that gives a pleasant performance boost while keeping battery life high.

Intel gives us another option with its X25-V Value SATA SSD. The drive offers read/write speeds of 170MB/s and 35MB/s respectively. you can get it for US$125, a bit higher than the usual fare though you have the chip makers stellar reputation to rely upon. And yes, if you did a double take there, Intel does make disk drives though they don’t do the platter-based hard drives; those are so 2009.

A couple of new SSDs have shown up this week. First up is Active Media which introduces a new version of its Sabertooth line of 1.8″ SSDs. The SaberTooth ZT Turbo ZIF SSD is a solid-state drive for your HP Mini 1000, iPod Classic and other devices that use the smaller form factor drive for storage.

It has a ZIF interface and has a read/write speed of 100MB/s and 85MB/s respectively. It comes in 32GB and 64GB flavors, compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. Prices are at US$169.95 and US$289.95, available now at Active Media’s Amazon store.

Next is the Onyx Series SSDs from OCZ. It’s different from other 2.5″ drives in that it has breached the $100 price point for its 32GB version, something few others can claim. Read/write speed for this SSD are 125MB/s and 70MB/s respectively. It’s a great option for those who value speed over storage, something most netbooks need with their slower, power-sipping processors.

They released two versions the Reactor series which boasts a maximum read/write of 250MB/s and 170MB/s respectively and the Nova series has a maximum read/write of 270MB/s and 190MB/s respectively. The Reactor series also has a miniUSB port so you can use it as an external hard drive by just using the appropriate cable.

The Reactor comes in 60GB and 120GB versions. The Nova is available in 64GB and 128GB.
