As promised last year, Symbian OS is now open source and they are taking the computing world one device at a time. The developer site are having a Wild Ducks project that aims to create a DIY phone much like how most desktops are made today, using off-the shelf hardware and the Symbian OS. They are also trying to install the system on a few other devices.

The Symbian Foundation CEO had high hopes for the operating system and says that we could probably see a full-fledged computer OS based on Symbian in a year or two. Looks like things are really going to get interesting in the mobile system arena with all the new ones floating around.
