Though, it really took after some years to actually absorb and recognize the booming tablet industry. The wide spread of known handy tablets today is significantly influenced by the integration of great features such as touchscreen display, word processing schemes, web browsing, gaming and a lot more. Hence, competition among tablet PCs manufacturers also gets tighter and sharper as of this time, making contenders to continuously deliver their very own high-end portable tabs.

According to Digitimes sources, in the coming 2012, there will be general upgrades with most tablet PCs regarding the sizes and display resolutions respectively. Upcoming sizes will include 7, 8.9, 9.7, 10 and 11.6 inches for new tabs. As for the Apple, a new iPad is expected to equip with 2048 x 1536-pixel while a 1920 x 1200p resolution for other PC makers.

Next year, international shipments of tablet PCs are anticipated to increase by 60% to over 95 million units. This comprises of 57 million from Apple, 9 to10 million from Samsung, Amazon and Barnes & Noble as well as one million from Sony, as the sources revealed.

Acer Taiwan president Scott Lin knows that tablet PCs are currently selling like hotcakes. Yes, as someone who leads a company that sells devices being taken over by these slate-like contraptions on the market, Lin is bound to realize just how much of an impact tablet PCs are having on computers such as notebooks these days. Well, the tablet PC may be enjoying its ride in the waves of success right now, but according to Lin, upcoming Ultrabooks such as the Acer Aspire S3 will be the ones having the last laugh. Lin’s theory is that since ultrabooks can go toe to toe with tablet PCs not just in terms of performance but also in terms of thinness and lightness, consumers will soon realize that it’s ultrabooks that they want to buy instead of another iTablet from some fruity company in California. Lin bets that Windows 8-powered ultrabooks will be the prime driving force of PC makers in taking the market back from tablets. In a few months, we should be able to see if there’s any truth at all in what’s been said above.

About a week ago, rumors got around about Toshiba’s plans on unveiling a dual-touchscreen tablet PC that wielded 7-inch displays with the codename “GuideBook.” The rumor said that it would launch this June, and, lo and behold, it’s actually here. Toshiba officially announced it today as the Libretto W100 alongside a new ultrathin notebook to celebrate their 25th year anniversary in the laptop business.

So what’s so good about the Toshiba Libretto W100 tablet PC, aside from its dual 1024×600 pixel resolution 7-inch touchscreen displays, built-in accelerometer and haptic feedback? Well, for starters, the Libretto W100 isn’t a toy as it can run a real desktop operating system — Windows 7 (the standard version comes with the Home Premium version pre-installed). This is made possible by its 1.2GHz Intel Pentium U5400 ULV processor, 2GB of RAM and 64GB SSD. There’s even a 1MP webcam onboard to facilitate video chats through Skype or other messaging clients. As for the rest of the specs, the Toshiba Libretto W100 boasts built-in Wi-Fi n and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR for connectivity, as well as a single USB 2.0 port and microSD card slot for expansion or data transfer.

If you like what you’ve read about the Toshiba Libretto W100 tablet PC so far, I recommend you to stop reading right here. The next few sentences might possibly cause you to lose respect in a company that impressed you a mere two paragraphs ago. Still reading? Well, be informed this device is currently being considered a “concept PC” by its makers and will be priced at a whopping $1,099 USD when it comes out on a limited basis within the next few months. If it catches on, we might see a consumer-friendly version (with a more tolerable price tag, I presume) that you and I won’t just admire, but will probably buy as well.

So, the WSJ is reporting that Verizon and Google are currently in talks regarding a possible collaboration on a new Tablet product. Obviously, this is Google’s answer to Apple’s iPad which has a 3G version which is tied up with AT&T. And this is the reason why Verizon is teaming up with Google.

A Google spokesperson did not issue an official Google statement about the report. But Verizon Chief Executive Officer Lowell McAdams told WSJ:

“We’re working on tablets together, for example. We’re looking at all the things Google has in its archives that we could put on a tablet to make it a great experience.”

Convinced or not? Do you think that this tablet can fairly compete with the iPad?

The Toughbook is of course known for its toughness but Panasonic has a new model which not only can withstand a tremendous amount of punishment but is also lightest in its class.

The new Toughbook C1 weighs in at just 1.45kg and is a convertible tablet PC. Another innovation to this laptop line is the inclusion of an Intel Core i5 2.4GHz CPU and an optional multitouch screen. What’s more is that this touchscreen can be used while wearing gloves so it’s perfect for field operations and military use.

Toughbook C1

12.1″ 1280 x 800 LCD

2.4GHz Core i5

2GB RAM

250GB HDD

Windows 7 or XP

802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, WWAN

5-hour battery life

Weight: 1.45kg

On top of the specs above, the device is spill-resistant, shock- and vibration-proof and has a rugged magnesium alloy case. So if you’re ready to move up from your netbook into the big leagues or just need a notebook for the hazards of your field job, this would probably be one device that’s on top of your list. It’ll be available for US$2499 and bundles in a standard 3-year warranty.

The company in charge of making products under the Korean Averatec brand, Trigem, is gearing up to launch two new “next generation” tablet PCs during the first half of 2010. The two tablets will differ only in screen size, with one having a 7-inch screen and the other, 10-inches. The design, as shown in this mockup, looks very sleek, though it has quite the bezel. And it’s being shown as having a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera, so video conferencing should be a distinct possibility. There is but one problem, though. While the upcoming TG Averatec tablet PCs are being billed as next-gen, they come with a rather outdated operating system: Windows CE. And since I learned Korean on the Internet, I can’t quite confirm if the press release states something about Linux compatibility or just mentions it randomly. In any case, pricing for either of the two tablets has not yet been revealed, but as an e-book reader I’m sure this will sell well for under $200. Check out another photo after the break.

Let’s put the brakes on for a moment on the coverage on the “magical” iPad. Don’t get me wrong, I’m getting one myself but since we still have a long (and tormenting) wait ahead of us, you might want to review your other options.

GottaBeMobile’s Sumocat rounded up a few tablet suspects in front of a line up for us to scrutinize. Included in the list is Envy-inspired HP tm2, the ICD Ultra, a Camangi Webstation and the hybrid tablet netbook (netblet?) Lenovo U1.

All of these run full blown operating systems in either Android or Windows flavors. That might be something you need more than the snappy OS of the iPad. They also have a couple of things that Apple’s new device doesn’t – Flash support and USB ports. Still, these tablets don’t have the slimness and lightweight profile of the iPad. Check out the complete list at the link below.

A member of the MyDellMini forums has modded a Dell Mini 9 and turned it into a Tablet PC. Rob928 took the netbook, stripped the lid off and trimmed the hinges among other things. He used a “Honda Fun and Easy” solderless touchscreen kit to create the tablet. One issue that was found with the mod, is that due to the design of it, it can get a little hot. It loses it’s heat through the keyboard but because the screen is basically upside down, the heat isn’t ventilated. If that wasn’t enough, he also added Windows 7 to the device, which is described as better for a touch screen device anyway. You can view photos of the various stages through Rob’s Picasa account.

A recent check upon LG’s patent filings has revealed that the company is once again looking into making convertible tablet notebooks. We say once again because, apparently, the company came out with a convertible tablet netbook back in 2007, when netbooks weren’t even “invented” yet. The new convertible notebook, according to the patent, will have two different operating systems. One for “notebook mode,” and another for “tablet mode.” Of course, the patent makes no claims that the product will be out soon, but it’s in the works if the drawings and descriptions in the patent are any indication. We’ll update you as soon as more information regarding this product comes out.

Meant to replace chalkboards that are still in use in some parts of the world, a tablet PC called I-Slate was created by researchers using the probabilistic CMOS technology designed by a certain Dr. Krishna Palem and his team at Rice University. It was formally announced during the IEEE’s 125th Anniversary event, and is supposedly solar-powered, WiFi-enabled and has support for stylus input. One day, the makers hope to see their chip embedded in all sorts of devices besides the I-Slate tablet like cellphones and TVs. But for now the use of their technology will be limited to their creation, prototypes of which are scheduled to get distributed in India this spring.
