A member of the MyDellMini forums has modded a Dell Mini 9 and turned it into a Tablet PC. Rob928 took the netbook, stripped the lid off and trimmed the hinges among other things. He used a “Honda Fun and Easy” solderless touchscreen kit to create the tablet. One issue that was found with the mod, is that due to the design of it, it can get a little hot. It loses it’s heat through the keyboard but because the screen is basically upside down, the heat isn’t ventilated. If that wasn’t enough, he also added Windows 7 to the device, which is described as better for a touch screen device anyway. You can view photos of the various stages through Rob’s Picasa account.

What seems to be a clone of the T1028 tablet-netbook from Gigabyte has surfaced in China, to join the masses of netbook clones already on the market, albeit a clone with a rotating screen which could be the first clone of its type.

The ‘Shanzai 100 See Ban Gu’ comes fitted with a rotating 10.2 inch tablet screen, is powered with an Atom CPU and is complete with a 160GB hard disk drive and 1GB of RAM. Netbooked.net have taken a guess that the screen resolution will be 1024×600 but, that isnt confirmed and neither is pricing. Shanzai do comment that the netbook will be out in time for the Windows 7 release although, they don’t confirm that this is the OS the netbook will come installed with.

The Tablet UMPC is going to be relevant again, with the announcement of the Archos9, the first 9-inch Tablet UMPC running Microsoft’s Windows 7 OS. This sexy little machine is billed by Archos as a MiniPC that does away with keyboards in exchange for a virtual on-screen keyboard and stylus support on a resistive touchscreen display. As it comes pre-loaded with Windows 7, multi-touch is going to be one of its top features, though we’re not exactly sure if that’s such as good idea with the screen being resistive and all. It still looks like a pretty interesting offer, though, as the Archos9 is equipped with Intel’s new Atom Z515 processor, 80GB hard drive, built-in Bluetooth and two DVBT TV tuners with “diversity reception,” as Archos puts it in its press release. Besides on-screen controls, it also has several hard buttons on its sides for easier access and controls. Archos hasn’t announced a price or release date, but from the looks of it, we’re betting a lot of people are going to save up for one. Watch out for additional details here.

Craving for Android on a 7-inch tablet? That’s exactly what the folks from Kinpo are busy with these days–they are working on a 7-inch Freescale-powered Android tablet that’s tentatively called the Kinpo Thin Client, as demoed in the Freescale booth during Computex 2009. The 7-inch screen of the Kinpo Thin Client sports a WVGA 800×480 resolution and as you might have guessed, it is a touchscreen. It appears to run pretty smoothly in the video but it is obvious that Android hasn’t been optimized for the device itself yet. Perhaps, as Kinpo completes the work needed for the Thin Client, we’ll see it even more as a finished product than as a prototype. Watch the video of the Android-based Kinpo Thin Client after the break.

While Archos jumped late onto the netbook bandwagon by releasing the 10-inch Archos 10 netbook a couple of months ago, the company looks like it wants to be the first one to come out with a full working Android Internet media tablet. At least that’s what one can gleam from Archos’s latest press invite for an event that is scheduled for June 11th in Paris. The fact that Archos is working on Android should be no surprise, given the popularity the platform has these days from open source software advocates, but it’s interesting how Archos has chosen to work on an Internet media tablet instead of netbooks like many other existing netbook makers. Perhaps they see more success in tablets, or less competition, or bigger profits. There are no clear info on specs right now, except what were announced last February by TI in a press release. We’ll have to wait for an official Archos announcement to get the full list of features.

Meant to replace chalkboards that are still in use in some parts of the world, a tablet PC called I-Slate was created by researchers using the probabilistic CMOS technology designed by a certain Dr. Krishna Palem and his team at Rice University. It was formally announced during the IEEE’s 125th Anniversary event, and is supposedly solar-powered, WiFi-enabled and has support for stylus input. One day, the makers hope to see their chip embedded in all sorts of devices besides the I-Slate tablet like cellphones and TVs. But for now the use of their technology will be limited to their creation, prototypes of which are scheduled to get distributed in India this spring.

This week at Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in Taiwan the UrbanMax tablet was presented.
The UrbanMax is a concept design combining tablet PC with netbook/notebook. With it’s 11 inch screen it can be used as a tablet PC with the touch screen flat, or it can be tilted to use as a netbook or even to replace a notebook. When in tablet mode, it uses a minimal interface but when the touch screen is tilted the tablet netbook reverts to Windows Vista.
Further specifications are not known at this concept stage. Intel have however said that the UrbanMax will use SSD for storage.
