Acer president Jim Wong has confirmed through an interview for T3, a gadget website, that they are planning to launch at least one tablet with an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor. Unfortunately, no new details or specifications were laid down.

Netbooknews, on the other hand, spotted three tablets that may be in the works on the Acer support website.

The Acer Iconia Tab A700 may feature a Tegra 3 processor and a high resolution 1920 x 1200 pixel display.

The Acer Iconia A510 and A511 will both featue Tegra 3 chips and 1280 x 800 pixel displays. One model will be WiFi-only, while the other will have mobile broadband.

As of this time, the three tablets appear to be running Google Android 3.2 Honeycomb.

It looks like Asus is planning to make moves just in time for the official release of Android 4.0 a.k.a. Ice Cream Sandwich. While talking on stage at AsiaD with the Wall Street Journal’s Walt Mossberg, Asus head Jonney Shih unveiled the “next-generation Transformer tablet”. Much like the original Asus Eee Pad Transformer, this new one will feature a 10-inch screen and Android as its mobile operating system. However, it’s gonna pack a lot more punch than its predecessor due to its quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 chip. Other features include a built-in SD card slot, mini-HDMI port, and 14.5 hours of battery life. Asus has decided to officially call this new tablet the Transformer Prime, and it will have an official launch in two weeks time–November 9. We’ll be privy to more details about the Asus Transformer Prime then, so watch out for updates.

ICD Gemini

11.2″ 1366 x 768 multitouch display

1GHz Tegra

512MB RAM

4GB to 32GB flash storage, built-in

Google Android

802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, FM Radio, 3G

SD slot, microUSB port, 2MP front facing camera and 5MP autofocus rear camera

No actual units yet though using Android will hopefully win it a few buyers. The FM radio seems like an after thought though I would have rather it packed 4G.

NVIDIA has been under a lot of pressure lately to deliver their tablet-oriented Tegra 2 chipset. Lots of manufacturers are depending on the chip maker to get their product out on time so that they can cash in on the impending tablet craze.

While a lot of speculation has come out due to this, NVIDIA says flat out that it’s not true. In fact, Tegra products are already headed to companies who are building devices based on the chip for release in “the next few months”.

Tegra combines a low-power ARM CPU with NVIDIA graphics to deliver longer battery life without compromising on HD playback. If this pans out, expect lots of great alternatives to the iPad in the future and maybe a few netvertibles thrown in.

The new Adam tablet from Notion Ink inches a step closer to reality for us with a demo as well as some revelation on its specs. SlashGear got a preview of the touchscreen device at the Mobile World Congress, though only via a video.

Notion Ink Adam

10.1″ 1024 x 600 matte touchscreen with Pixel Qi display (readable outdoors)

1GHz ARM A9 CPU with NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset, 1080p compatible

16 or 32GB SD

Linux-based OS (Ubuntu or Android)

16 hours battery life (for HD video playback)

Backside trackpad

Weight: 0.65kg

The India-based company also packs in an accelerometer, light sensors and GPS though the config will change depending on the region where it will be sold. There’s also ebook software bundled, FBReader if the picture above is accurate, and an ecosystem of apps will also be available.

What interests me is the backside trackpad which I guess is for controlling a mouse without touching the screen, which should make it easier to use while holding it on the go. No details yet on when it will be sold and how much but maybe the next tech event will flesh out more information about this iPad challenger.

A company called Rambus which designs high-speed memory chips, claims that NVIDIA has violated five of their patents relating to dynamic-random access memory or DRAM. This also relates to memory controllers, which can be found on either graphics cards or motherboards, and NVIDIA has a business of selling both.

A U.S. International Trade Commission judge in Washington has just ruled that NVIDIA is violating three of the patents being claimed by Rambus, and mentioned that the other two are invalid. This brings us a rather interesting situation, because after the full commission has finished reviewing the case put forth by Rambus against NVIDIA and it is found that there has indeed been a patent violation, products using NVIDIA graphics cards or chipsets may be banned from import for a period of time.
It looks like MSI is really ready to battle it out with other manufacturers in the e-book reader market while it still hasn’t reached full maturity. According to a report from a Chinese periodical called Apply Daily which is cited by DigiTimes, MSI is gearing up to launch and showcase a dual-screen e-book reader powered by Nvidia’s Tegra processor at CES 2010 in Las Vegas. Besides which, there will also be a single-screen model at the expo, and both will be showcased alongside a so-called “3D notebook” with specs that are still undetermined at the moment. It looks like MSI’s booth will be one to watch at CES 2010, though I’m sure Asus will have something similar to what they have in store just a few locations away in their own booth. We’ll see.

One of the world’s top car makers, Audi, has chosen to incorporate NVIDIA’s Tegra chipset into the satnav system of one of its upcoming cars, the Audi A8. Utilizing NVIDIA’s 3D graphics processor in Tegra, the Audi A8 satnav system will feature Google Earth images, as well as 3D models of European cities, and will be able to render entire maps topographically, shading tunnels and bridges (all thanks to Tegra). So while NVIDIA is slowly being walked out the door by Intel in the integrated graphics market, it doesn’t look like the world’s biggest discrete graphics company is going to lose business any time soon, with clients like Audi.

It looks like NVIDIA is quite busy with its new Tegra family of “computers-on-a-chip” these days, as it has been revealed that besides the usual mobile platforms it should be working on to support (i.e. Windows Mobile, Windows CE and Google Android), it has also been working on the up-and-coming Google Chrome OS with Google itself. NVIDIA’s GM of Mobile Business Mike Rayfield spilled the beans to JKOnTheRun’s Kevin Tofel saying, “Nvidia is “working closely with Google,” on the Chrome OS platform” and that it isn’t just meant for handheld devices.

Why would anyone want a mobile computer with Tegra on it, you ask? Well, its main selling point according to NVIDIA is that it easily supports hi-def video playback and that it uses less power than Intel’s Atom processor for the said task. Some people may find this adequate in a mobile device, but sad to say, I am not one of them. NVIDIA makes a good point in saying that the “cloud” can be a good alternative for desktop apps, but for me they will never be able to replace the best desktop programs I use (or at least not any time soon). But Chrome OS is supposed to change this, so let’s hope the products hit the market in time for a closer evaluation.

Back in June, Mobinnova introduced the Elan netbook, a new portable computer that offered 5-10 hours of high definition video viewing thanks to it being based on NVIDIA’s Tegra platform. It has been showcased recently and according to a report from DigiTimes it has already received orders from telecom service providers in Europe and North America, where it will appear before the end of 2009. Foxconn has been identified as the primary manufacturer of this Tegra-based “smartbook” while it is said that Compal Communication is also supposed to make one before year-end. Apart from supposedly excellent high-definition video playback and slightly longer battery life (than average), there doesn’t seem to be anything special about Tegra. I suppose I will have to see when I get my hands on a unit of my own for testing.
