And we have another touchscreen mod. One of the users at MyDellMini tinkered with a Dell Mini 10v and installed a Hoda 10.1″ Touchscreen Kit. For around US$85 and a strong will, you can do the same though it did get him a few tries to reassemble the chassis to get the touchscreen to work. He also decided to put off turning it into a convertible since the monitor cables weren’t long enough.

A member of the MyDellMini forums has modded a Dell Mini 9 and turned it into a Tablet PC. Rob928 took the netbook, stripped the lid off and trimmed the hinges among other things. He used a “Honda Fun and Easy” solderless touchscreen kit to create the tablet. One issue that was found with the mod, is that due to the design of it, it can get a little hot. It loses it’s heat through the keyboard but because the screen is basically upside down, the heat isn’t ventilated. If that wasn’t enough, he also added Windows 7 to the device, which is described as better for a touch screen device anyway. You can view photos of the various stages through Rob’s Picasa account.

The HP Mini 1000 isn’t the only netbook you can mod to your heart’s desire for a touchscreen display. Turns out, even older model, such as the Asus Eee PC 900HA, are susceptible to this kind of minor hackery. All that was needed in this Eee PC 900HA touchscreen mod were the following: a screwdriver, some tape, a plastic card, a solderless touchscreen kit and some extra wires. Even a person with “very little knowledge on computer things” managed to make it work. So, if you’ve been wondering how you can do this to your netbook yourself, you should check out the instructions on the Eee User Forum.

If you just can’t wait for the first touchscreen netbooks to come around and are eager to try out Windows 7′s touchscreen features, you can have a little do-it-yourself session with an HP Mini 1000 to solve all your problems. Poster Mako from the MyHPMini forums has put together a how-to for installing a touchscreen display on an HP Mini 1000. It’s not the easiest mod to do to a fragile little netbook, but the payoff should be worth it, if you manage to get it working. If you follow the instructions closely, you should. But be advised that this might void your warranty. Mod carefully.
