We can fairly decisively conclude we’ve finally entered a post-netbook time. And this Q2 2011 marks the first time we’ve witnessed netbbooks numbers being eclipsed by tablets, according to ABI Research – where global tablet sales increased to 13.6 million units, than that of 7.3 million netbooks. In fact, Netbooks surged 13% from their first quarter sales of 8.4 million netbooks, and, more significantly, tablet sales really shot up: clocking 6.4 million units in the first quarter of this year.

Cost seemingly isn’t a driving factor as earlier thought – according to the research firm; tablets still maintains an average price of $600 – almost double compared to their typically under-powered netbooks. Oh, by the way, did you know that of the 68% of tablets sold were of Cupertino’s flavor?

While it’s not the first tablet mod we’ve seen and it won’t be the last, it’s always interesting to see how users are modding their devices. The latest mod turns the Dell Mini 9 into a tablet. Not only that but, it has a working touchscreen and accelerometer. A video has been posted up of the mod in action which shows the touch screen working as well as the accelerometer that was added. While it isn’t as smooth as say, the iPad at how quick and smoothly it auto rotates, it’s definitely something worth boasting about.

To some it may seem rather daunting but, has been described as rather simple. You will however need some technical know how to pull it off. The basics of the mod however, is to remove the keyboard, add a touchscreen film to the screen and add some software tweaks. You can view the video of the Dell “once a netbook” Mini 9 after the jump. One Laptop Per Child’s next low-power laptop will come in the form of the XO-1.75, which apart from shifting to an ARM processor from a Via x86 CPU will also make use of a touch-sensitive 8.9-inch screen that supports multi-touch, according to a recent report from Computerworld. The actual release of the OLPC XO-1.75 laptop is scheduled to happen some time next year, while a similarly equipped tablet PC called the XO-3 is slated for launch some time in 2012. Being a product of the OLPC foundation, the XO-1.75 should be quite affordable but there is currently no word on pricing for it. It should be more affordable than most mainstream netbook models, at least, since OLPC have already ruled out the use of Windows for future models and are sticking to Fedora Linux for the default OLPC OS.

About a week ago, rumors got around about Toshiba’s plans on unveiling a dual-touchscreen tablet PC that wielded 7-inch displays with the codename “GuideBook.” The rumor said that it would launch this June, and, lo and behold, it’s actually here. Toshiba officially announced it today as the Libretto W100 alongside a new ultrathin notebook to celebrate their 25th year anniversary in the laptop business.

So what’s so good about the Toshiba Libretto W100 tablet PC, aside from its dual 1024×600 pixel resolution 7-inch touchscreen displays, built-in accelerometer and haptic feedback? Well, for starters, the Libretto W100 isn’t a toy as it can run a real desktop operating system — Windows 7 (the standard version comes with the Home Premium version pre-installed). This is made possible by its 1.2GHz Intel Pentium U5400 ULV processor, 2GB of RAM and 64GB SSD. There’s even a 1MP webcam onboard to facilitate video chats through Skype or other messaging clients. As for the rest of the specs, the Toshiba Libretto W100 boasts built-in Wi-Fi n and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR for connectivity, as well as a single USB 2.0 port and microSD card slot for expansion or data transfer.

If you like what you’ve read about the Toshiba Libretto W100 tablet PC so far, I recommend you to stop reading right here. The next few sentences might possibly cause you to lose respect in a company that impressed you a mere two paragraphs ago. Still reading? Well, be informed this device is currently being considered a “concept PC” by its makers and will be priced at a whopping $1,099 USD when it comes out on a limited basis within the next few months. If it catches on, we might see a consumer-friendly version (with a more tolerable price tag, I presume) that you and I won’t just admire, but will probably buy as well.

Now that Dell actually has plans to release a set of touchscreen tablet slates soon, I wonder what’s the use of getting a Dell Mini 9 modded into a tablet. For the sheer awesome geek cred of course!

The B-rock is now selling his beloved tablet netbook to fund some important housing choices and you can help him out. He’s offering a lot to go with the modded device including a lot of internal gadgets like a TV tuner, accelerometer, GPS, and Bluetooth plus a maxed out rig of 2GB RAM and 32GB SSD. He’s also up for a couple of weeks worth of after-sales tech support should you need it.

If you think you’ve heard about this before, well it was featured in a lot of blogs before and he did previously put it up for sale as a hackintosh though Apple balked at that and that sale didn’t go through. If you want to grab this fine little device, head over to eBay right now and bid on it! B-rock will ship to folks in North America and some parts of Europe.

Jeff Barney of Toshiba America has revealed plans of the company to design and launch new slate PCs this year. These touchscreen tablet devices will not be sporting any keyboards and will be similar in form factor as the newly-released iPad.

They will be coming in a variety of form factors from dual-screen models to one with a simple 10″ screen. Barney added that they will both be running on Windows 7 and Android, intriguing since Microsoft and Google, the makers of these systems respectively, are competitors in more than one front.

“We definitely see a place for the slate, we see there’s a market there. It’ll be expansive like netbooks, it won’t be cannibalistic,” he said. Toshiba is at the number 5 spot in the list of the world’s top PC manufacturers and number 4 in the United States. No other details have been revealed by the company.

Over at Italy, Samsung has released a touch-enabled version of the NB30. It looks like another netbook that has a touchscreen but isn’t convertible to a tablet. It’s a bit weird, really, since putting touch on a vertical screen might be cumbersome to more than a few people. Although, it does make navigation easier and if desktop all-in-ones can do it, why not netbooks?

The option will cost €20 (US$27) over the regular model and will have all the usual rugged features of the original.

It’s pretty responsive as Windows netbooks go though it does have several downsides. It’s a bit imprecise though I think that’s largely due to the fact that Windows isn’t really a touch OS. The unit also cannot be converted to tablet mode so your arms might get a bit sore after a while. The touchscreen looks a bit thicker which will definitely add bulk to your machine.

Check out the video below for the full demo on this tech from HP.

Sure this tablet mod isn’t the first one with seen, with a rebadged MSI Wind U100 most recently turned into a slider, like the VAIO UX. This time around, one modder has hacked his U100 to resemble the upcoming iPad from Apple. The keyboard was removed from the netbook, a touchscreen added and what really makes it look like more of an iPad than the regular tablet mods, is that alexbates, founder of InsanelyWind added OS X to it with customisations. He also cites that, not only does it look like an iPad but, the specs of it, far exceed that of the iPad with it having “10 times the storage, twice the speed, external video (VGA), webcam, USB ports, and built-in multi card reader.”
