Sony have posted a competition up on their blog for folks in the US. If you answer three questions correctly, related to pop you’ll have the chance to win a netbook or Billabong Boardshorts. The competition closes Friday 3rd September where 2 winners will be picked to win the netbook and 10 winners for the Boardshorts.

The netbook available in competition, is the Billabong edition of the VAIO W, which comes in “Imperial Lime”. Most of the specs of the netbook are pretty standard, 1GB of RAM, 10 inch display and a 250GB hard drive. The VAIO W however, is highly praised for it’s higher resolution. Most netbooks feature a maximum resolution of 1024×600, where as the VAIO W, you can use that, or opt for the higher 1366×768 option, which definitely makes a difference.

We recently showed you the VAIO W which was being released in Australia in collaboration with Billabong. The Billabong edition netbook came in “Imperial Lime” which consisted of splashes of lime green, blue and black. Now Sony have announced that the Billabong limited edition Sony VAIO W will be making it’s way to the US. You can currently pre-order the netbook for $500. Specs remain the same, 10.1 inch display, 1GB of RAM, Windows 7 Starter and a 250GB hard drive.

Sony will also be participating in Billabong’s Design for Humanity event. Sony will be auctioning off two of the netbooks and proceeds will be donated to the Invisible Children foundation. When the netbook will actually be shipped is unknown but, it’s likely to be from June 10th, when the Design for Humanity event takes place.

While the Sony Vaio W12S1E1 may have been out for a couple of months now, over in the UK the netbook, according to SonyBrands has been hard to find in stores. The Vaio W netbook has been released in several variants, including a 160GB model, a 250GB model, an Intel Atom PineTrail model and an eco friendly version. SonyBrands have got hold of the VAIO W12S1E1, the second model to be announced, which features a 250GB hard drive, 1GB RAM, Windows 7 Starter and Intel Atom N280 processor.

The VAIO W12S1E1 is available in white, pink, brown and charcoal, with the model unboxed being the white version. It has a 6 cell battery, which is shown on the netbook and sticks out but, looks like it will allow sufficient airflow. You can view the unboxing photos after the jump.

Netbook Reviews has a review of the Pine Trail version of the Sony Vaio W. Here are some specs.

This is one of the more premium priced netbooks available, which reflects in all of Sony’s products I think. With the premium price comes some nice features though – a big trackpad, slim and well-built chassis and a bright and vibrant display. The price is US$449 for the lowest-end model and tops at US$599 for the one with the most features. It’s available in blue, pink, brown and white and you can pre-order it over at Amazon.

Over at CNET, the guys have got hold of Sony’s newest Vaio W model which is eco friendly. They report it looks almost exactly like the original Vaio W but, the case is made from recycled materials, 20% of which is from recycled CDs. The specs of the device remain the same apart from the CPU. Sony have replaced the Intel Atom N270 and now use the N450 CPU, which is more energy efficient.

As well as looking a lot like the original, CNET report that it also feels like the original as well. Which is a good thing, as it means the chassis is sturdy and has a crisp screen resolution. One thing that hasn’t changed though, which was a complaint in the original Vaio W, is that they keyboard feels cramped. The netbook is currently available for pre-order from Amazon for $479.99.

Remember how we told you the Sony Vaio W was no longer available from PC World? Well it may be because Sony are releasing an updated model. Like we previously told you, the VAIO W11S1E is still available on Amazon for £330-£332 but now, a new model, the W12S1E is also showing up at Amazon.

The W12S1E features pretty much the same specs as the previous model with a couple of changes. The new model will run Windows 7 Starter instead of Windows XP but, the main change and probably the reason for the new model number, is the hard drive size. The W12S1E will feature a 250GB HDD instead of 160GB. The extra hard drive space and newer operating system will cost you an extra £70 though. The netbook is available to pre-order for £399 in white, tan and pink. Release date is November 10th.

The Sony VAIO W11S1E was previously available from PC World in the UK for delivery only. Collection from store wasn’t possible and now ordering it, isn’t at all. Not from PC World anyway. Those following the direct link to the 10 inch netbook from Sony will find themselves redirected to the netbook page, with no sign of any Sony netbook in sight.

It is however, still available from Amazon.co.uk. All color models are still currently in stock from £330.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Sony are releasing their netbook, the Sony Vaio W in a two tone pink to raise money for the cause. The netbook will come with a matching carry case and mouse. The netbook will be available to purchase until the end of this month. Sony are also releasing their eReader in pink for the cause. The company will donate $110,000 of profits into the cause. The Vaio W is already available in pink but, if you haven’t picked one up yet, now is the time to pick one up, as not only will you get a brand new shiny netbook but, you’ll also be supporting the cause.

Amazon have posted up their pre-order listing for the Sony Vaio W netbook on their website.

Sony’s 10.1 inch netbook is available for pre-order at $499 and comes fitted with an Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM, 160GB HDD, Bluetooth and will be pre-installed with Windows XP as it’s operating system. The Vaio W is available in white, pink and  brown and the pink and brown versions are available immediately for pre-order. The white version’s pre-order status is out of stock currently but, it is live so hopefully will be ‘in stock’ soon.
