Epson, Onkyo, Viewsonic as well as other smaller companies have reportedly contracted Taiwanese laptop makers to build ultrathin notebooks for them, which could help drop the initial prices to $599(456 EUR).

According to unnamed sources, the companies mentioned have contracted Pegatron Technology and Elitegroup Computer Systems(ECS) to build their Ultrabooks. Pegatron, in particular, plans to begin mass production of no less than five Ultrabooks in April and May this year, while ECS is said to start shipping two such ultraportable machines until the end of the second quarter.

For now, no details were released about the actual specifications of these Ultrabooks, but there are reports that their prices will be between $599 and $649 US(456 to 494 EUR). The cheapest Ultrabook on the market today is the Toshiba Portege Z835, which sells for $799.99 (594 EUR). This, however, is only a Best Buy exclusive deal, as its regular retail price is actually set at $929 (689 EUR).

Intel has developed Ultrabooks in order to counter the ever-increasing popularity of tablets, which are eating away into the PC market. However, the high costs associated with both manufacturing and the hardware needed for such ultrathin laptops have kept Ultrabooks from becoming as widespread as Intel has hoped for.

After the release of the ViewSonic’s 7-inch Viewpad e70 comes the latest two 10-incher tablets namely, the Viewpad 10pi and ViewPad 10e. The up-to-date slates are said to establish for users comment on mobile professional enterprise.

ViewPad 10pi has integrated the Intel Atom Z670 Oak Trail processor supporting the Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread as well as Windows 7 Professional mobile operating system platforms. Whereas the ViewPad 10e packs a 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor on a 1024 x 600-pixel screen resolution display. This tablet brings the SPB Shell software for intuitive 3D home screen which then provides the users a choice for highly customizable three-dimensional panels. Unfortunately, it lacks the official Android Market, however, users might still enjoy downloads of application sorts through the Amazon Appstore.

The ViewSonic Viewpad 10pi is priced at $849 while the ViewPad 10e costs $299 and will be available this month. Given that this year has been filled with lots of latest software trails, these kinds of devices might face a serious battle over its contemporary rivals today.

In a bid to gain more market share, makers of 7-inch tablet PCs have started dropping prices as a way to attract more consumers. This same move has also apparently been applied to tablet PCs with 10-inch screens nowadays. The quest for the top of the tablet PC space has become much harder with the recent introduction of the very affordable Amazon Kindle Fire, plus the fact that there are so many smartphones these days that are capable and much more pocketable (which is a plus to a lot of consumers).

Recent examples of cheap 7-inch tablet PCs include the ViewSonic ViewPad 7e, which was launched for $199 but now reportedly costs even less than that. However, it’s interesting to note that certain companies like Asus still insist on putting a high price on their products (such as the recently unveiled Transformer Prime 10-inch Android tablet). I’m curious to see if this type of strategy will still fly when the soon-to-be-launched Apple iPad 3 finally becomes available.

ViewSonic ViewBook Pro

13.3″ LED backlit 1280 x 800 display

1.3GHz Intel Core 2 Duo ULV SU7300 with GS45 + ICH9M-SFF enhanced chipset

2GB RAM

320GB HDD

Built-in 8x DVD Drive

802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR

2 x USB, 1.3MP webcam, VGA, HDMI output, multitouch trackpad, card reader, audio jacks, ExpressCard slot

4400mAh 6-cell Li-Ion battery, up to 8 hours battery life

Weight: 1.63kg

That’s certainly a lot of features to pack in a ultrathin including the ExpressCard slot and the DVD drive, though I do question the logic of putting in a disc drive inside a portable. Of course, it also packs a punch on the price. Get it from Amazon for US$889.99.
