If 2009 was the year of the netbook, it looks like 2010 is shaping up to be the year of the tablet PC. Manufacturers left and right are gearing up to launch what in their minds will be the best tablet-based PC that can be used a mobile computing device for consumers. Viliv is one such manufacturer cooking up something for the tablet PC market right now, and their upcoming offering which was spotted a Computex 2010 in Taipei by the gang at Laptop Mag shows a lot of promise.

The final list of specs isn’t out yet, but it looks very good so far. There’s a sweet 1366×768 capacitive touchscreen display onboard, as well as an unknown mobile processor which, although unspecified, was identified as ARM-based and according to Laptop Mag, “was powerful enough to provide an immersive 3D gaming experience at full screen.” The rest of its features include an SD card reader, USB port, HDMI out, and a front-facing Webcam, built-in Wi-Fi, optional built-in 3G or WiMax, and a 10-hour battery.

The name of this promising tablet PC, by the way, is the Viliv X10. The one used by Viliv to demo in their suite at Computex 2010 was running Android 2.1, but the company mentioned that before the device goes to market, it will be upgraded to Android 2.2. So you can go ahead and add that to the current list of features and as Laptop Mag points out, this also means full flash support.

There’s another version of the Viliv X10 in the works which will run Windows 7 instead of Android, but that, like the one pictured above, probably hasn’t been finalized yet as pricing info and release dates have not been made available by Viliv.

While Viliv have a wide range of products, as the company is Korean, most of the products are hard to come by in the US but, that’s set to change from tomorrow. Best Buy will be selling 5 different Viliv products including 3 tablets and 2 netbooks.

The Viliv S5 will be available in two versions and features a 5 inch display. Best Buy will also be stocking the 7 inch tablet, the X70EX.

Netbook wise however, the S7 is available in two models. Unfortunately there’s no word on whether the S10 will make it’s way to Best Buy as well, the company’s 10 inch netbook.

Viliv has been on our radar for a while now and they graced one blogger with a demo unit of their S10 Blade tablet. UMPC Portal has a pretty comprehensive first look at this device and has a few things to say about it.

As with other touchscreen tablets, it still has some ways to go in increasing touch responsiveness when using multitouch. It also doesn’t have palm rejection, a particularly important feature for handwriting software.

It does come in a 2GHz model and you can get an optional 3G modem for mobile connectivity. A miniUSB port can handle inter-computer file transfers with just a compatible cable; Viliv’s software will handle the heavy lifting. It also has S-Video and composite video outputs.

Viliv’s tablet netbook, the S10 Blade, has now become available for pre-order through Dynamism. There are several configurations available but, only the base model is priced. All of the models feature a 10.1 inch swivel touch screen display, with a resolution of 1366×768, 1GB RAM, built in webcam, WiFi and bluetooth. The storage, processor and 3G differ on each model, as does the operating system. The base system, comes with Windows XP, which is a bit of a let down. The S10 features 3 point multi touch but, this isn’t supported with Windows XP and you’ll need to upgrade to Windows 7.

The starting price point will be $699, with a Windows 7 version costing more, even though it will enable all of the features. Currently it’s listed as coming soon, with no specific release date.

While most people still haven’t even tried running Windows 7 on their precious little netbooks yet, Viliv will boldly showcase their S5 MID during Computex running Microsoft’s up-and-coming next-gen OS. Yes, a full-blown desktop OS on a teensy-weensy mobile Internet device. It’s going to be a sight for sore eyes, I’m sure. Or at least, I hope so. It sounds like a pretty daunting task, if you ask me. And quite an uncomfortable one, at that (running a desktop OS on a MID, that is). That said, I’m aware of the saying, “to each his own.” And I’ll be looking forward to seeing evidence of the Viliv S5 MID’s prowess (or lack thereof) with Windows 7 when it goes on display.
