The Dell Vostro 1400 is a 14.1” widescreen laptop belonging to the Dell Small Business Category. It offers economy and quality, both at the same time. The 4 inches wide screen is big enough for comfortable viewing yet it does not cause any inconvenience to the users. The overall build quality of the Vostro 1440 is pretty impressive. It looks rock solid from above. The entire case is made of a magnesium alloy that does not flex anywhere. Pushing in on either the lid or the main chassis presents no give. This makes the laptop a bit heavy given its size though. The keys on the Vostro 1400 keyboard are well placed. The feel of the keys is very good as well and they possess a nice grip on them. There’s no sag to the keyboard anywhere, it’s very firm. The keyboard is also sealed to prevent any liquid from going into the notebook. The touchpad works fine, it has horizontal and vertical scroll areas and the mouse buttons are quite nice. It would be nice if there were an on/off switch for the touchpad vicinity. It can also be used to turn wireless on/off. The brightness of the screen is very pleasing as well. It offers up to WXGA+ (1440 x 900) resolution. The options for the screen include a WXGA glossy, WXGA non-glossy or WXGA+ glossy screens. With the glossy screen colors are bright and bold, but one will get reflection from strong lighting. Viewing angles are so-so, about average among other notebooks. The speakers for the Vostro 1400 are located above the keyboard. It output is amazing and watching a movie on the Vostro 1400 is truly an enriching experience. As far as performance is concerned, the Vostro 1400 can be configured to one’s heart’s content, which is usual will Dell laptops. That said, this is an Intel based notebook so a selection of Core 2 Duo processors is the only choice. That’s good news though since this is the top mobile processor family on the market. If the laptop is being used for small business tasks, then a low to mid-range Core 2 Duo like the T5470 1.60GHz will be fine. But in case of more demanding needs, one needs to shell out more for a faster Core 2 Duo such as the Intel T7700 2.40 GHz processor. The 6 cell battery gives about 2.5 hours of battery life while it was mostly idling but with wireless on and the screen at about medium brightness. To conclude, the Vostro 1400 is definitely a great notebook for the price. Some people might even prefer the all black look over the more flashy Dell Inspiron color options. Another really nice thing about the Vostro 1400 is the fact that one gets a 30-day return policy, no questions asked by Dell, if the customers decide it’s not what they want.

It lacks an automatic deactivation like in the Apple MacBooks, though. The keyboard’s subjective typing feel can be described as pleasant. Here also there is no surprises  that both notebooks have been equipped with the same input unit. The roughened surface provides good gliding traits and allows navigating pleasantly with the touchpad. Both mouse keys give the user a good feedback.

While Dell have proved very popular among the netbook world and bringing a high level of customizations to netbooks, it seems CEO Michael Dell doesn’t actually like the portable devices. He claims that users aren’t very happy with them. He also said that it may be cute and light but, after a day or two, users will want to revert back to a regular 15 inch netbook. He describes netbooks as being good for specific markets, such as schools.

Dell have released several different netbook models, with the Dell Mini 9 proving the most popular, especially amongst hackers and modders. Liliputing comment that it’s “kind of funny” considering that while Michael Dell isn’t impressed with netbooks, the company is creating innovative and top class designs to their netbooks.

The Vostro A90 is a re branded Dell Mini 9 which is available in black. Previously no release date or price was announced, but the Vostro A90 has now been released in the UK. It’s available on the Dell website from £235, which is approximately $349.

This makes it cheaper than the Dell Mini 9, which retails for £269. However when the Vostro became available in Japan, the price was significantly higher at a price of about $998. The Dell Vostro is also available in Germany for 329 Euros. There’s no word yet on whether the netbook will reach North America.
