Sagem Orga and Telefonica have developed a new technology that squeezes in a WLAN modem inside a tiny SIM card, turning any mobile phone into a WiFi hotspot. It’s called the SIMFi and it aims to provide easy access to the internet to notebooks and netbooks without any installations and setups.

Remy Cricco, Technology Innovation Manager at Sagem Orga said, “If customers can connect their notebooks to the Web anytime and anywhere by simply using what they have with them most of the time and what is the most trusted secure device – the SIM card – adoption can be expected to be enormous.”

This would be the perfect solution for those with iPod Touches and iPads who want ubiquituous WiFi without strings attached. Just pop in the SIM into your existing phone and you have instant wireless access. It’s also a much easier solution versus having to tinker with software apps, tethering and other things.

A hack and instructions on how to perform it, show users how to add 3G into their Samsung NC10. The downside to the hack however is that you use the WiFi. The WiFi adapter is switched for a 3G modem instead. The hack is very easy to perform though and WiFi can be replaced with a USB WiFi dongle, giving you the best of both worlds, espcially if you find you use both a lot.

The hardest part is taking the case off and opening it up. Once inside the WiFi adapter can be popped out and replaced with the 3G modem. Additional modification could also be made on the netbook, to allow easy SIM swapping by making a small hole in the bottom and soldering the 3G modem in, as jkkmobile have done to a Dell Mini 9.

GPS, Wi-Fi Geolocation, Geopositioning. Call it whatever you like. Thanks to the popularity of the iPhone and other mobile phones with this feature, demand for GPS-enabled navigation has steadily increased. So, won’t it be logical that netbooks jumps into the GPS bandwagon as well?

Dell knows this and is taking an early stride by launching the Dell Wireless 700 location solution to its Mini 10 netbook. To make this possible, Dell is integrating an internal GPS card with built-in WiFi locationing in the innards of the Mini 10 netbook. With this inside the machine, the Mini 10 can now calculate position using WiFi access points or using GPS satellites. The Dell Wireless 700 runs on Broadcom’s A-GPS and Skyhook Wireless WiFi position solutions.

Hardware alone won’t make this feature functional. Dell is also implementing the CoPilot navigation software that will provide the turn-by-turn directions.

In addition, Dell has also teamed up with SkyHook Wireless and Loki to push the location-based services. Loki is a browser plugin.

The Dell 700 Wireless location solution will support Windows XP, Vista and later on Windows 7.
