It’s long been the bane of those who have notebooks and netbooks carrying the open-source OS that it’s always one-upped by Windows users, especially in hardware support. One of those things Linux users do not enjoy is out of the box multitouch support even if their device has it when it runs Windows. They’re missing out on pinch to zoom, two finger scrolling and twisting to rotate.

All that is about to be solved as Synaptics gears up for the introduction of its Synaptics Gesture Suite Linux (SGS-L) which will be sold to manufacturers bundling their machine with any one of the supported distributions of our penguin-themed operating system including Ubuntu, Chrome OS and Xandros.

If you want one on your current machine, it will be available soon enough. I’m sure one wily programmer these can tease out the software code and bundle it in repo for everyone’s enjoyment.

Taking their share of the limelight at the ongoing Computex 2009 in Taipei is Xandros with their demonstration of the Moblin V2 OS made specifically for Intel Atom-based netbooks such as the Eee PC. Moblin V2 will allows further customization of Internet, media, social networking and graphics capabilities of the Eee PC.

Some notable enhancements that Moblin V2 would bring to the Eee PC include:

enhanced graphics capabilities such as shadows, spin, bounce, and 3D animation

touch-friendly applications

rich graphical user interface

integrated application store with “click and run” access to other softwares

Some statements from Xandros’s folks:

“By employing Moblin Version 2 in its future products, Xandros will be able to deliver new, compelling user enhancements to Intel Atom™ processor-based devices such as the ASUS Eee PC,” said Doug Fisher, vice president of Intel’s Software and Services Group and general manager of the System Software Division.

“The new Moblin 2 for Intel Atom processors provides the foundation to build dynamic interfaces with integrated social networking, to satisfy the media-rich lifestyle of today’s mobile users in a timely manner,” said Andreas Typaldos, CEO of Xandros.

“Working with ASUS on products like the ASUS Eee PC has demonstrated the wisdom of creating Linux-based ‘netbooks,’ and we are excited to be working with the Moblin v2 palate to further enrich the user experience,” said Mr. Typaldos.

Freescale Semiconductor has announced plans to launch its very own Android-powered netbooks in the second quarter of 2009. These netbooks, projected to cost only about $100 (as opposed to the usual $200 cost of other netbooks), will be shipped primarily with Wi-Fi and without wireless 3G connectivity, according to a report on Reuters. I know, Android still has a long way off becoming the best known mobile OS for smartphones, so it would be interesting to see how well it performs on netbooks. Aside from Android, Freescale’s upcoming netbooks will also support third-generation operating systems from Phoenix Technologies and Xandros.
