While we’ve heard it before, it seems that Microsoft are set on it this time – Windows XP will no longer be pre-installed on netbooks. Previously the OS was to stop being pre-installed on computers and laptops but, with the arrival of netbooks, the OS lasted longer than Microsoft had planned, largely due to the fact that the netbooks couldn’t run Windows Vista very well. Windows 7 on the other hand, works fine on the majority of netbooks. Most netbooks released now, come with Windows 7 Starter install, which while it does have reduced functionality, such as the inability to change the desktop wallpaper, netbooks are capable of running the OS. In fact many owners have also upgraded from Windows 7 Starter to Home or even Ultimate, with no issues. Very few netbooks still come with Windows XP pre-installed and from October 22nd 2010, consumers won’t have the choice. So if you still prefer Windows XP, it’s recommended to pick up a netbook before it’s too late.

Like netbooks, there seems to be plenty of UMPCs and MIDs to go around these days. And big-name PC manufacturers aren’t the only ones who contribute. Take this new 5.6-inch UMPC called the Shenzen HT560. Judging by its short list of specs, one can’t be faulted for thinking of it as ancient.

It’s got a 1GHz Via C7 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 16GB SSD, two USB 2.0 ports, an on-board 1.3MP camera, and its screen has a resolution of 800×480. It comes with a slew of wireless connectivity options including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS which will make it come off as modern, but it uses an ancient OS by comparison–Windows XP.

This will probably be quite wallet-friendly considering what you’re going to get, but it doesn’t look like it’ll be easy to get one outside of China. To make matters worse, a minimum order of 10 is required for every purchase. Oh well.

Hungry for more info about the upcoming Asus Eee PC T91? Luckily, we have some. Recently, this convertible touchscreen netbook got its first showing in the UK, and it was demonstrated to members of the press. Pocket-Lint was there to cover the event and while they didn’t get to do a full review of the said netbook, they did get to snap several photos and have made a gallery which the above embedded photo is taken from. Pocket-Lint mentioned that the Eee PC T91 could hit the UK by May for somewhere around £500 or about $690 USD. However, that information is not final yet, so we’ll have to wait for official word from Asus to confirm. In the meantime, head on down to see more photos of the Eee PC T91 via the link below.

No matter how many colors of the Samsung NC10 you buy, you won’t be able to get one and with Windows XP installed and upgrade it to Windows Vista Enterprise. Well, actually, you can install Vista Enterprise on it, but you will fail at activating it via KMS. There are two known causes for why this is happening, and both are documented on Microsoft’s pages. If you plan on doing the same thing with a future Samsung NC10, better check out a thread about it on Edugeek which we’ve linked to below to see the discussion.

It seems like consumers aren’t quite as ready to pick up a netbook running Linux and use it happily, as one UK retailer had hoped they would be. Windows OS seems to be the OS that Carphone Warehouse customers prefer anyway. The company are recalling it’s own brand of netbooks (their ‘webbook’) from every store in order to replace them with a more ‘consumer friendly’ netbook with Windows OS installed.

The recall isn’t due to any fault with the units, it’s simply a response to their customers who are finding the Linux operating system confusing and many are actually returning the netbook because of it. CW are footing the bill for the recall and subsequent installation of the new OS which according to Mobile Today will cost around £25 per netbook to license them with Windows XP.

The 10.2 inch CW netbook was released in July and is a unit built by Elonex for the UK retailer. Consumer demand has been good for the netbooks which is offered free with mobile broadband subscriptions. The retailer is now offering other models including a Toshiba NB100 and the Asus Eee PC 701 model.

The growing popularity of the the Windows XP Operating Systems among netbooks was not expected by everyone. Whereas the first version of the Eee PC which sprung the growth of the netbook market, was well accepted by users with its Linux OS, those were however are curious enthusiasts who want to get a feel of the Open Source OS. And another reason why the Linux OS was embraced by the netbook-using community is because of it doesn’t pull up the prices of netbooks as compared to when using the Windows XP.

But gradually, that all changed as Microsoft started its Windows XP OS at such an affordable price for netbook purposes. Hence, netbook manufacturers including Asus have found it a great development and has boost the sales and growing interest of users on netbooks. Users are still more accustomed to having their machines running on Windows XP rather than the Open Source Linux and its various distros.

And Microsoft knew this. That’s why it even extended the life of its Windows XP in favor of full roll-out of the Windows Vista. Netbook manufacturers and users rejoiced about this development. Just recently, it even demoed a beta version of its newest OS, Windows 7 on of all machines but a netbook.

It looks like Microsoft is bent on fully tapping into the netbook market. And Linux better watch its back, as users’ preferences for the Windows OS might affect the distribution and use of the Linux OS on netbooks.

So, which do you prefer to have on your netbooks? Windows XP or Linux?

As for me, my Eee PC 701 still runs on Linux and I more than satisfied with it as an OS and sees no possibility of installing Windows XP on it.
