Following on from the release of the Intel Atom Pine Trail processor, which is replacing the N270 and N280 CPUs found in many netbooks, the company appear to be working on another “trail” processor. This time round, it’s the Oak Trail and will replace the Z5xx series of processors. Currently, the Z5xx processors use less power than the N-series and also have GMA 500 graphics. Examples of netbooks which use the Z5xx processor, include the Sony Vaio P and the Asus Eee PC T91MT.

The Oak Trail processors will, according to PC Watch, use less energy than the recently released Pine Trail processors. Again, we should see the Oak Trail CPU slowly replace the Z5xx processor in netbooks.

Intel Atom N450, aka Pine Trail is making it’s way to many netbooks, with most manufacturers announcing new models to include the latest processor. To boost sales of older models and empty the stock, Cyberport, an online German company are offering 10 Euros off netbooks until the end of February. The offer applies to netbooks with the following processors: N270, N280, Z530.

While there may occasionally be better offers around, this one applies to more than one or two models and for more than a few days. With it lasting until February 28th, there’s plenty of time to decide whether to get a new netbook or not. Depending on stock levels of course.

Fujitsu’s latest addition to its LifeBook range of mobile computing devices bears very little semblance to your average netbook. Why am I not surprised? Would-be netbooks these days are more ‘laptop’ or ‘smartbook’ than anything else. The Fujitsu LifeBook UH900 would probably fall into the smartbook category. It sports a WXGA resolution screen (1366×768) on a 5.6-inch display. Now, read that again in case you missed the part where you’re supposed to say, “What? Are they insane?!”

Yeah, it looks like they pretty much are, or at least they intend to drive a few people insane with that mind-boggling combo of screen size and resolution that’s even crazier than what the Sony Vaio P came with. The screen will support multi-touch input, by the way, and other features include an Intel Atom Z530 processor, SSD storage, 3.5G and Bluetooth wireless connectivity.

UMTS and non-UMTS versions of the Fujitsu LifeBook UH900 will be introduced starting January of next year. It will be available in Mocha Black, Fiery Red and Vintage Gold. Fujitsu’s mum about its price at the moment, but you can expect it to be a bit more expensive than your ‘average’ netbook due to it having a multi-touch, high-res screen, SSD storage and a range of wireless features.

MSI’s Thin & Light X-Slim X320 notebook is now available in the U.S. through outlets like Newegg. In case you’ve forgotten, the MSI X-Slim X320 features a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor, 2GB of RAM, 250GB hard drive, 802.11 n Wi-Fi, built-in Bluetooth, 1.3MP camera, a 4-cell battery and Windows Vista Home Premium. Intel’s GMA 500 graphics come integrated and the 16:9 13-inch display features 1366 x 768 pixel resolution. There’s also a 2-in-1 card reader built-in along with 3 USB ports, an Ethernet port, stereo speakers and a VGA-out port. If you’d rather get this than a netbook, prepare to shell out $599 USD.

While you may be satisfied with what you’re getting in a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor-equipped netbook, did you know that you could have had the same netbook with a slightly better processor that’s clocked at 1.86GHz? Yes, a 1.86GHz Intel Atom processor is available in the form of the Intel Atom Z540, but manufacturers aren’t in a hurry to offer this variant of the Atom in their products. Why? Because it costs more–twice more, to be exact–than the 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor. Yes, it offers a higher CPU clock speed, but at a 100% increase in price, it’s hard to say it will be worth it, especially since netbooks with 1.6GHz Atoms seem to be doing pretty well in the market. Here’s hoping Intel wakes up to reality and lowers their price for these, so we can, you know, experience using it in future netbooks to see if it’s really any better.
