TV Tuner now works with Linux-based Asus Eee PC

If you ever wanted to watch TV programs in your Asus Eee PC, especially when you are on the move, you can do so now with Asus’ My Cinema U3100 Mini DVB and DMB-TH Tuners. These two TV tuners were modified to make them work in the Linux OS Asus Eee PC.

HongKong based PC magazine has tested both the driver and software of the USB Stick and they both worked fine. With the exception of H.264 software decoding, so HDTV doesn’t play yet.

The Asus Mini DVB-T is used by European countries for digital video broadcasting, while the DBM-TH is the standard backed by the Chinese authority.

This is a great little TV tuner – I just got one for my EeePC 701 running Ubuntu Linux 8.04.1 and it works like a charm – Ubuntu already has all the drivers included as part of the restricted-modules package – all you need to do is sudo apt-get install dvb-utils me-tv and then go to Applications->Sound & Video->Me-TV, let it tune in all the channels it can find and just start watching! Much faster setup than Windows!

Unfortunately the little Eee doesn’t quite have enough grunt to decode and display H264 encoded programs (HDTV – you need a Core 2 Duo to do that properly), but it only eats up about 40% of the 701’s Celeron CPU decoding and displaying SDTV at full-screen. Very smooth, clear and great. Works pretty well on the move too! Co-exists with Compiz Fusion quite happily as well.

About the only annoyance is that it doesn’t come with a remote control, but honestly, if you’re going to sit that far away from your Eee to NEED a remote, you must have bloody good eyesight…!

8/10 rating from me. It loses a point for not really being small enough to strip and insert inside the Eee somewhere… (it’s 7cm long x 2cm wide x 1cm deep, and won’t be much smaller after removing the casing) :(
