Hey, the whole Mac vs PC referring to video editing is not related to the hardware any more for they are exactly the same. The point is, for the same price (2000€ for example) you can buy a faster PC than a Mac. So the video editing stuff comes down to software. If you can find the tools you are looking for on the Windows platform then you´re going to run faster than on a Mac, and thus is going to be better.

However, Apple has FinalCut Pro, for example, which is made by them and only for them, so if that´s the video editing programme you like you´re sadly stuck with Apple, otherwise is way better to buy a high-powered PC.

You talk about 1000$ PCs that can´t play HD video correctly. That is really weird, the only cases I came through is people buying PCs with lot of RAM and HD but without a dedicated graphics cards (talking about laptops here). If it has an intel GMA or something like that it´s not going to play video properly, nor games, nor anything graphics related. My PC was 800$ more than two years ago and plays and edits video (HD as well) perfectly because of the graphics card + processor. You have to know what you´re buying if you want it to work well, but for the most part, if you buy a 1000$ dollaras PC it will have a graphics card and will play/edit HD video perfectly :)

@Jonathan: Gates still works at MS - he's on the board in an 'advisory' role and people will associate Gates with MS for a long time to come. Hardly surprising. I particularly liked it when at one of his charity conferences he unleashed some mosquitoes into the audience...the media headlines for the day....Gates unleashes more bugs into the wild....nice one, Gates. You moron.

And to close, Ubuntu is amazing. I'll never pay for software ever again. You can't say better than that!

My experience
1 Windows runs fine at first but then begins to break down
2 MS had HD video editing in Vista and removed all that in Windows 7 and created a bas--- of an editor.

3 MS creates 4 versions of the same soft ware. MS would save a great deal of money if they'd create one OS .

4 OSX and Linux both are stable use less hdd space.
5 All those commercials about MS listened to me are either relatives to the MS employers or Paid Actors

5 Apple is now out ranking MS and is now an important competitor in Both computers as well as small portable devices . don't take my word for it google it.

6 Ubuntu and other Linux is getting more and more useable every day.
7 linux is proof positive that an OS can be made free , be virus free, and be stable.
8. Linux and OSX are malleable to the Users needs where are windows threatens to throw one in prison for trying so.
MS no longer has you register the program with you name and address but instead uses a unique id meaning that you no longer have any rights to anything. Not Having a personal registration I feel gives MS all control. My work is my work

Bill gates gives a few bucks and helps out a few people with charities, . . . . ..Bill gates robs millions of people with constant hours lost in updating and discontinuing of software calling it obsolete and creating a new similar program that needs more updating, has less features than the previous, and costs the user more of their hard earned dollars and . . . .precious time. . . . .(Some of these users can't "afford" the cost of dealing with these problems while working long hours at a low wage jobs and trying to support a family. . . .I wonder how many man hours have been wasted trying to update, fix and replace windows due to a new operating system release. . . . .I guess what i am trying to say is. . . .even though bill gives alot of money to a few charities. . . .its the "aggregate" effect on mankind that makes up a man's final ending. . . . .

just bought my daughter a notebook with windows 7 starter on it, an hour later she says "daddy I can't put a background picture on it." come to find out windows left that option off because they said it slowed systems like notebooks down. Hacked the registry and got a her background pic on it but can't change it unless i regedit again. the new background pic is on it though and it seems to run at the same speed as before. Microshaft says it will upgrade so she can change the background for $80. . . crap the notebook only cost $250. . . . . . Why would anyone want a notebook that is dysfunctional with windows when ubunto probably has all the bells and whistles available for free.
