If you're going to go through all that trouble, I wouldn't consider yet another bloated proprietary OS like Windows 7. I've been running EEEbuntu, Ubuntu Netbook Remix and Kubuntu Netbook Remix on a variety of EEE 1000, 901 and 900, and it's just such a relief! First of all it works out of the box, it doesn't crash nearly as often as Windows, uses less memory and makes the battery life longer (according to some that have run both Win and Linux on the same machine!
On top of that – no virus threat anymore, as viruses do not infect Linux.
Upgrading to Linux instead will really save you a lot of both money and trouble!

What I am really worries about is battery life: while my 1000H runs for 3.5 hrs with XP (no wifi, screen 50%), many have already reported a drastic fallback of battery performance (30-40%). As battery is crucial to my working trips, I am a bit afraid to install win7 – no matter how much I’d love to…
